  1. Heya! So I posted this in the Infinity pages, but it has a chance to get some more eyes on here. I'm putting together the display for our three-man team at this year's OFCC, making it the biggest hobby project that I've taken on in awhile. Here is the entirety of the post in the other forum: ---------- Alright! I took the day off and I'm getting a running start on the OFCC display board for Eric, Justin, and myself. This is the basic concept, poorly drawn by a poor artist. The basic plan is to have different levels for each army. The lower level will be for Justin's Haqq, living it up down below. The ground level will be for my Ariadna, and the raised platform will be fore Eric's Haqq. The idea is that each army will have it's own space to be shown off, but there will be coherency between the three within the setting. Getting the base level of foam cut and glued down Cutting a path for the pipe and sewer drain: Putting on the rest of the foam, and creating a half-pipe in the exposed half of the board using the rest of the pipe to shape foil over plaster: Plastering the whole thing to close gaps, texture, and make it safe for primer: That's all for now as there is a butt-load of plaster that needs to dry before it will be safe to work on any further. The rough ground will work fine for the ground level, but the lower level will get a layer of card stock over the foil. The platform is something that I'm gathering materials for, so the final design isn't decided yet. The main goal is that it has at least 48 square inches of space for models and some drop pieces. Any who, so far everything is going well, and I am looking forward to progressing further on the project! ---------- First question I have is if anyone knows of a good product for water effects. I've never had to do them on bases or terrain before, and I really don't want to f*** anything up with a bad product or bad knowledge of how it is used. Any other tips would be appreciated as this project continues, and thanks in advance!

  2. Since I have not using the Infinity models I already own, it seems smart to sell this box. :)

  3. I've read about good results using clear silicone caulking for water effects. Paint the area to be covered in the pipe whatever colors you want the water to be, do the silicone over that and brush on clear gloss once dry. The clear gloss gives the shine, silicone adds depth and pre-painting the bottom of the pipe gives the colors. Being Infinity, I'd go for a toxic waste, florescent yellow-green personally;)

  6. When we started the OFCC (used to be NWCC) back in '03 or whatever, it was 4 teams of 6. The next year, we (foolishly, trustingly) let people bring however many because we were doing the matching system using an app that could manage arbitrary team sizes. However the Evil Canadians rigged the system by putting their best players on one team, and hanging their newer players out to dry on a second team. So in response, we (orkdork and I) changed the team to size 4, so that we (orkdork, bunto [our other brother], and myself) could make a team and beat the Evil Canadians. We would have made it size 3 but that would have been too obvious, so we made it size 4 and rolled in Raindog to round out our team. We crushed the Evil Canadians soundly, sending them crying back North to lick their wounds and complain about hidden ranking forums, matching systems they couldn't understand (because of the AI-based approach we used), and defeats they couldn't tolerate. After seeing that a team size of 4 clearly led to the Best Results, we carried that forward until - and this is where my memory is a little hazy - I got a kid, or got divorced, or drunk, or all three, and quit playing Warhammer, and the Evil Canadians slowly emerged from under their Weeping Stones and started infiltrating the planning process. They began of course by placing a mind control device in Raindog, and forcing him to rig the system so they could again win the tournament... Anyway that's the history, and everything after the second sentence is complete b.s.. With Love, Nathan

  7. Overnight the board dried just fine with no cracks. The plaster under the foil is still wet and will probably take a few more days to a week to completely finish. Basically instead of looking like a pink cake it now looks like a white cake.

  8. I hope no one minds me promoting some of my art shows on here randomly. I figure no harm in trying to let people know about some of these events. This Saturday, April 1st, from 4pm to Midnight at the Lucky Lab ( 1945 NW Quimby ) will be a free art show. It is all ages from 4pm to 10pm and dog friendly the whole time. Lots of local street artists will have art on display and for sale. The first 50 people in get a free goodie bag with various donated art (most likely stickers and pins and a coloring book). There will be a kids craft/art area. Live Music. There will also be live screen printing happening with 25 different designs available (including one of mine). You can get an available design printed for $3 if you bring in a blank shirt for it to be printed on (blank shirts will be available for purchase at the show for $10). Hope to see some of you there!

  19. WIP shot of my Onager Dunecrawlers and some Rangers I finished up. I didn't enjoy painting the rangers as much as the vanguard, don't know why. They'll be good for the new Armageddon game coming out soon though. I also bought some Bolt Action decals that had nice, clean numbers and put them on my Kastelans at the left shoulder and lower right leg. Any suggestions for warhead colors on the Icarus Array? Once these are finished, I should have 1,500 points painted!

  20. Originally I was going to do a scheme based on the rather Savage looking Orcs from the Gorgrond Zone in Warriors of Draenor,,forgot their name but they are basically controlled by plant creatures,,or something along those lines. Anyhow Ive decided to go with a Green/Grey base and a light blue drybrush for an Snow Orruk thing,,calling them "Icetoofs",this way I can ally with Beastclaws if I want to,,of course any of the Beasts from that army would be considered Ghosts to the Savages,,,Ghosts of beast that the tribe has slayed of course..or so they think.Anyhow,,wanted to do something a bit different than the usual straight green but its ending up to be a rather "Frosty" looking green, heh.

  21. Everything on the board seems to be drying just fine without any cracking or morphing of the foam (yessss!). It will still be a few more days before I do anything else to it just so it has plenty of time to cure before I start laying primer over the plaster. After that I need to plan out how to create and support the upper level and the floor and bridges of the lower level. I am seeing another trip to the hardware store in my future. I'm thinking of lists to bring to the Glimpses event in Sherwood this weekend. I'll probably bring my OFCC list as one of them, as it's already 200 points LI and gives me a chance to test it out. The Spec ops can get 8 more points of gear though, so I will have to pimp them out to no end!

  29. "It's back" in the sense that nothing in print in the 40K setting has used Movement Values for years. Not that it's back in Necromunda, but that it's a thing in any currently printed 40K-setting Rules again.

  31. I had to back away for a bit, and take a few deep breaths, because at the end of the day, this is all just a game. First, please don't bring up the Spirit of the OFCC. I was at the first OFCC at the armory that Raindog mentions. It was this experience that led me to create and run the first OFCC 40k. And attend just about every OFCC 40k since (missing only due to illness). I understand the Spirit of the OFCC, what made (and makes) it great, and what makes people want to come back. Second, and I can't stress this enough, I'm not recommending bringing some ultra-soft Smurf list to fight a Barkstar (I am assuming that is a Thunderwolf Deathstar list?). I'm saying bring what you enjoy playing, and you can find opponents to give you good, fun, COMPETITIVE games at OFCC. Because whether it's beer & pretzels or not, this is a game that is still about victor and victim. Please don't mistake competitive for WAAC (it seems this is a common misconception) - I can be competitive running a single CAD, no allies or detachments, fluff-puppy of a list. I still want to win, and will employ strategy and tactics to try and ensure that. That is what makes me competitive, and what brings me back to OFCC. And while this may be a beer & pretzels weekend for a lot of people, wheat causes migraines (so no pretzels) and I don't drink (so no beer) - so what would I get out of it? (That is meant to be tongue in cheek!)

  32. To be clear, I love competitive 40k. It's pretty much the only game I play. But I'm not bringing that to OFCC.

  36. Well said Xavier. I'm in a similar position. This will be the first time in (I think) 7 years that the Devlan Studs of the Bellingham Warhamsters won't be a presence at the 40K ofcc. The combination of the inclusion of a 30K campaign and the de-emphasizing of the team structure has lead to our dissolution. As for me, I'll be at the OFCC, but I have no idea what I'll be playing. The team structure has always motivated me to get my army painted and knock the rust off when it comes to playing. But without the "I don't want to let the boys down" motivation, I have no incentive to work on 40K. The game simply isn't good enough to interest me in participating without the camaraderie, grudge matches, and [big bad swear word] talking that lights my fire year after year. The good news is y'all won't have to worry about your super badass mortar trophy residing in Washington another year :P

  37. Not sure where is appropriate to put this, so I put it here a well. Sorry if that's wrong. I want to make sure it is read. Alright everyone, I've been wanting to say something on this topic for a long while. I've been reading your posts, and the organizers' replies, and I have wanted to find out how to say this. This is serious time, which those of you that know me, is not a common thing. My name is Sean Whelan, and I've been participating in OFCC for about 11 years, and have only missed one in that time. I joined a team my first year, and have captained Team Diversity for the other nine. I currently live in Ohio, attending to my doctorate, and despite that I have attended OFCC each year. I and my two teammates Kaoshin and Kyojin (Alex and Jeff) fly over 2000 miles each year, and spend a large sum of money, to attend this event. I am not going to list amounts, as it does not matter, and I am not saying this to imply that anyone should cater to our desires due to us coming so far each year. What I am saying is that what I've just told you SHOULD surprise you. Why on earth would three adults with bills, jobs, etc fly that far, to go to an event in Oregon, when we live a short drive from Adepticon? With that in mind, I am going to tell some stories about OFCC. - My first year, I was given a spot on a team randomly at the last moment, lent about half an Ork army (Thanks Gravedigger!) and had the experience of my life. Even G-Money screaming out "I hate Fifth Edition!" and everyone laughing after his Raptors got gunned down by some of the new AP 3 boltguns that the THousand Sons carried (Remember when that was a big deal?). - Other than the three core members of our team, there is usually a rotating fourth member, and everyone that has joined our team even for one year, has felt like family (Mausdeadalive, skkipper, Brother G), and does to this day. - One year, there was this crazy mission where the models you killed got sent over to the game next to you as models for the guy fighting your teammate. I had a rough Ork list that year, and Jeff looked at me after a particularly brutal turn with a wounded puppy look and said "why are there so many blood angels over here?" I felt bad.... until three squads of his opponent's terminators walked on and gunned down three units. - One year, we knew who our opposing team was ahead of time in the third round, and they were fellas we'd played before. We exchanged quality scotch before the games as teams, and toasted each other, and played with a nice buzz (except one fella who was so drunk I almost convinced him to sell me his army for a hundred bucks ;) ) - Two years running, we were competing for LAST PLACE overall with the Emperor's Massive Unit, the title changed hands twice! - Last year was about the most ideal that an OFCC could ever be, and let me explain why. I played against folks I hadn't seen in years. I got to play against teams we'd played before, and see old friends. In one round, my opponent offered to buy me a beer, and when we got back Jeff and his opponent looked at us and said "What... you didn't get us any?" We shrugged. Five minuets later, we were deep in our games... and our beers had disappeared! We found them, in our teammate's guts. Threats, weeping and gnashing of teeth followed... then we bought more beer. And lastly, we played some friends of ours in the last round, and decided as a team to give them all four wins, and just throw out the mission, the format, and play a giant apocalypse game. It as amazing... it was hilarious, and it was silly. It was everything OFCC was supposed to be. Why have I told you these stories? I suppose at this point I'd be considered a veteran of the event, and I've seen it under many different HOGs, many different types of missions.. (that mission that made you kill your own stuff or lose.. what? XD), and I loved it all. But something that has remained a constant source of excellence has been the team nature of the event. I am actually bringing one of our local guys with us this year. Yes, someone who has NEVER BEEN is flying TWO THOUSAND miles to play 40k for a weekend with bunch of people he's never met, all because of what he's heard of this event. The team nature, the fun, the smiles, the beer and good times. The elimination of the team portion has crushed him in a way. I saw him deflate. I know it's not 'eliminated' per se, but it has been DE-emphasized significantly. I know why, and I am not saying it's right or wrong. Bryan is amazing and he loves this club and this event. I don't know the new HOGs personally, but I don't think they hate OFCC either. I trust these guys. But, this is the first time ever I've thought 'If I had not already bought my plane tickets, I might not go this year." when I heard about the partial elimination of one of the defining factors of OFCC. Does the captain system work flawlessly? No. Does the team system work Flawlessly? No. But is it important? I feel that it is. In the end everyone, remember that the guys that run this event get crapped on constantly by back seat administrators complaining about what they do wrong, but never offer how to do it better. While I disagree with how things are changing, I'm not surprised. Take my thoughts for what you will, and I'll be coming regardless, with a first-timer from Ohio. All I ask is that we don't lose the magic of OFCC by turning it into just another 40k tourney. Just not having a Best General, emphasizing sportsmanship, lauding painting... those are not the things that make OFCC magical. The people are. Friendships are. Beer and shenanigans are. Playing apocalypse instead of the mission is. That is what makes OFCC magical. Just keep it magical guys, that's all I ask. Thank you for your time.

  38. I really hope we don't see either of those to be honest! Really cool display pieces, put it at the center of a display board, but about as much fun to play against as a rock to the HQ (not to be confused with an ork Rok which can in fact be quite entertaining!).

  39. Thank you for your interest in the 40K event for this year's OFCC I will be the Head of Gaming for the 40K event this year, and I am excited to share everything I can with you. This FAQ is designed to outline and clarify details surrounding the event, and expand on the planned changes this year. This is a living document and will be updated regularly as questions are asked and answered. This thread will be pinned and locked, but there will be a parallel discussion thread to this document. That thread will be the place to discuss the FAQ contents and to ask additional questions. The discussion thread can be found at: http://www.ordofanaticus.com/index.php?/topic/29854-ofcc-40k-faq-discussion-thread/ New content will be added to this document in black text, questions will be in bold, and updates to existing content will be colored red. Please Note: It will take several days to get through the initial batch of questions, and that process will be delayed due to the Las Vegas Open. :) 2017 OFCC 40K FAQ What is the points level for this event? This event will be played at 2,000 points Is the 40K event a team event or an individual event? The 40K event is still very much a team event. Teams are encouraged and will be recognized in a series of categories. This is the first time in many years that teams will not be required for participation. Why the change from mandatory teams? There are two factors that drove this decision, making the event more accessible to people looking to participate and providing flexibility to returning players. Our event and what we do is pretty unique compared to many other organized gaming events, and I believe that drives the passion and interest of our player community. As they share that passion with friends and other members of their community, it is frequently tempered with the difficulty of how to get started. Finding or building a team for participation can be an impossible barrier for people looking to play. By removing this barrier, we are not looking to change what makes us special but to allow new players a better chance of experiencing it for themselves. Over the 10 years or so that I have been part of Ordo's leadership team, I have lost count of the number of teams who have come and gone from our events. I think this is a normal process as interests and situations change for members of our community. Sometimes the process of change happens quickly and may only impact part of a team. This many times leaves interested players or partial teams scrambling for a solution. When that solution does not come, they have few choices. Ordo wants to provide our players the stability to make their arrangements without tethering their fate to every other person on their team. How will game match up works? Instead of pairing team to team, we will be pairing player to player. This change is to accommodate the adjustment to the team policy and to provide additional flexibility to list building. The previous process of Captain's setting up matches was always a mixed bag. It was loved, hated, or simply seen as a task that came with running a team. I am sorry for the folks that will miss this activity, but I hope making it easier for your friends and club members to get involved is some consolation. Are there list building restrictions? Yes, but there will be very few restrictions. This flexibility is meant to provide players a certain level of freedom in creating a fun and exciting force to play. It is not designed to encourage power gaming or to assemble an unstoppable force to wreck all opponents. There are two processes that will be in place to discourage that behavior. The first will be how matches are established. Players with similarly powered armies would play each other and their future opponents would be determined through performance. Second, one of the sportsmanship metrics will be directly tied to the durability of your army. It is rarely fun to face an impossible foe and highly defensive strategies lead to boring games. We are looking to reward risk and acknowledge the excitement of an action filled game. Because this is a dice game, chance will always impact the outcome. The hope is the this will balance over the weekend, and if it does not please remember that they sell alcohol at the bar. Is there a list rating process? Yes, but it would be more accurate to call it a stack ranking rather than a rating. The list rating process over the years has landed somewhere between highly subjective and grossly inaccurate. This year we will simply arranging lists by power and using that to determine initial matches. This will allow players to gravitate toward similarly powered lists. Since future games are determined by performance, the matching accuracy should start to compensate game-by-game for other factors like player skill. Our hope is that your later matches are the closest, and it allows you to finish your OFCC experience on a high note. Will you have to play a member of your own team? No, and we will have a process in place to avoid (as best we can) inter-club match-ups as well. One of the joys of coming to OFCC is playing people outside of your club. Will you have to play the same person twice? No Will I get to play next to members of my team? Yes, but not for every match. In order to make player vs. player match-ups work and to allow teams to play next to each other, I built a system to accommodate. The way it will work is that all teams will be broken up into two groups. I will refer to these groups as "Dawn of War" and "Night Fight" because I am a nerd. All player matches will be group vs. group, and the groups will take turns with home field advantage. The Dawn of War teams will be grouped together in the first game each day, and the Night Fight teams will be grouped together in the last game each day. The middle game on Saturday will not provide home field advantage to any team. There will team achievements for performance in both home and away matches. .....more to come
