  1. Hey doc, will please take a look at my Zug? It's got blood on it...?

  2. One of the few things I'm really going to miss in 8th is saying "Jinkies!" every time I have a Unit jink. But on the flipside, it looks like there will be a lot more opportunities to disembark multiple Units from a single Transport. "OK, gang, let's split up and look for clues!" ;)

  7. Yeah, I agree with you now. Going over it the first few times it takes me a bit to figure it out. It would have made more sense if they would have been a bit more explicit with their descriptions. You can't buy the DS w/ SM singularly, just like you can't have a singular ST. So to have one price for a pair of ST, but then make you buy 2 DSw/SM doesn't make sense in my head.

  8. Frontline gaming (the guys writing the faction focuses with GW, also the ones who play tested extensively) have 8th edition battle reports up indicating that units embarked in vehicles do not count toward the unit restriction totals for reserves. Given their involvement with the roll out of 8th I'd tend to lean toward their interpretation for the rule.

  13. This was an excellent tournament with some top notch players. Matt Witek won the tournament with Outcasts, I did not play him as I was busy losing some close games and did not ascend tables with any wins. 10 players showed up with a good spread of factions minus Gremlins who weren't represented. I played Dreamer all three games and faced Ironsides, Sandeep, and Nellie, all of which were my first time seeing those masters. I felt like I was able to keep it close enough by focusing on my schemes and what I could control in the game. But.... mistakes were made. My ignorance got me on some enemy models and I made a few hasty decisions that cost me... a few timely black jokers... Game 1 Ironsides. She is scary in melee... no question. The strategy was turf war and I just ran around the center the best I could. Chose claim jump and leave your mark so I was fine attempting to out activate while working the outside only to move 2 scoring models within 6" of the center for VP. Those models would die instantly the following turn though to Ironsides, joss, or the emissary. Oxfordian Mages were used to great effect to push models vast distances to deny my schemes twice. 1 claim jump and 1 leave your mark were denied by those mages, yikes. Better positioning of scheme markers and a touch more aggression would've helped in this one. Big time. 6-4L Game 2 was against Sandeep, solid opponent who really knew his stuff. Looking back on this one it was all my own fault. I knew who he had frame for murder on and I killed him anyway, dumb. I had ways to mitigate that models effectiveness without killing it and could've put my main beater (Nekima) on the flank to oppose the Valedictorian who ran up on a waldgeist id put over there. If I'd have just surged to this flank with my entire force, minus summoned Alps to tie up the FFM target, I feel like Sandeep would've had more decisions to make. Instead... I gave him an early lead and control of the game that I was never getting back. 8-6L game 3 papa loco is 'loco'and put down 4 models and himself early turn 2 with some suicide bomber shenanigans. Feel like I could have mitigated his effectiveness by moving differently in T1, could have clogged an alley with a summoned Copellius and his 2" engagement range. Would've forced him to walk closer to his own guys. This was the difference in this matchup as it put me behind on the main objective. Needed all those minions for interacts and schemes. 6-4L Eventhough I lost all my games I had a blast! This game is really rewarding whether you win or lose because you can always recognize where things went wrong. With models having as many abilities as they do, it's really open ended as to HOW you use them and where you went wrong. Cards aren't always going to be there and it's not like luck isn't a factor, BUT I feel like you can always control enough to be competitive even if the cards aren't falling right. So many VPs can be earned without even having to flip a card and that's the resource management and spacing part of the game I find so gratifying. With all that I did come away winning the raffle for a translucent Kaeris box if anyone is interested. I will not play Archanist scum....lol. Really looking forward to my next game, can't get enough.

  15. All three of the Datasheets they showed off have either typos or Rules issues. The Malanthrope's Shrouding Spores affect enemy shooting attacks targeting "Models" within 5" of it, but shooting attacks always target Units, not Models. The Meka Dread has a Weapon profile listed for "Rokkit-bomms", but no way to actually equip it with them. Why am I not surprised :P

  20. I am trying to wrap my mind around this new pay for all wargear thing. So if I have a flying hive tyrant and I want to give it deathspitter with slimer magots, do I have to pay for 4 of them? Or 2 because they come in pairs? Also, there is no twin linking, so if I have 4 do I get 12 shots, or is it 2 pairs and I only get 6 shots?
    1 point
  21. Yeah, I can see the benefits of the new system, but there are still some details that need to be worked out. Now I need to go dig through my bitz box and see if I still have any Monstrous DeathSpitter bits left, or if I used them all to convert stuff.

  22. Frankie, organiser of the new SoCal Open and part of the play testing team behind the new edition of Warhammer 40,000, released this weekend, returns once again having turned his methodical and calculating brain to the equally logical Adeptus Mechanicus: Frankie: These cybernetic warriors are known for their cold logic, colder hearts and esoteric weaponry. Their armies have typically been seen in the War Convocation formation, formed around an Imperial Knight and a variety of different units and loads of “free” wargear. They’re a powerful army and remain so in the new Warhammer 40,000. The forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus will have armies of Robots, cyborgs, warrior priests of the machine god and Belisarius Cawl himself. So, first off, let’s talk about Belisarius Cawl. He is one of the most detailed and characterful models Games Workshop has ever made and looks amazing on the tabletop. His rules are equally impressive. He gives friendly Martian units within 6″ a re-roll to hit in the Shooting phase, similar to a Space Marine Chapter Master. He also lets you add or subtract 1 when you roll on the Canticle chart every turn which is incredible. He’s no slouch in shooting either with a gun that can potentially do 18 damage! Any big ticket unit will come to fear Cawl. Overall, he is one of the most solid HQ’s in the new Warhammer 40,000 and will be leading many Martian Adeptus Mechanicus armies. Next, we have a unit that wasn’t used much in the previous edition: the Electro Priests. Both the close combat and shooting versions are solid choices now with impressive damage output. The shooting version (Corpuscarii) gives you mass amounts of shots that explode on a 6+ to hit. And be aware that if you can get a +1 to hit, you get the bonus hits on the roll of a 5 or 6 – especially if you’re standing next to a Character that lets you re-roll hits. The Fulgurite, or close combat flavour of Electro-Priest can do mortal wounds on the wound roll of a 6+, which is tremendously powerful. Both units have a 5+ invulnerable save and an additional 5+ “Feel no Pain” style save for every wound they take. They are an excellent backfield protection unit that come in at a reasonable price point. Wait – I mentioned cyborgs, didn’t I? Well, let’s talk about the Ironstrider Ballistarii. These models have a 6+ invulnerable save, 6 Wounds and Toughness 6, which makes them tough targets to take down. The main reason to take these models, though, is their fire power. You can take them in a unit of 1-6, and each can be armed with a Twin Cognis autocannon, which is 4 shots at Strength 7 AP -1 and 2 Damage. Or my personal favourite, the Twin Cognis Lascannon, which is two shots at Strength 9 AP -3 and D6 Damage. The melee version, the Dragoons, are also fantastic with exploding 6’s to hit on their weapons and a high movement. But the key for either flavour of these guys is they are very points efficient. You will see many of them in Adeptus Mechanicus armies. Lastly, let’s talk about the Kastelan Robots. These models are monsters and can shoot twice or swing twice in close combat or even get +1 to their saves due to their suite of special abilities. They are Toughness 7, 6 Wounds a piece and are quick with an 8″ move. The Kastelan fists are +4 Strength, -3 AP and do 3 Damage with each swing meaning you do not want to find yourself engaging in fisticuffs with these guys. They can also be equipped with Heavy Phosphor Blasters which, when shot twice, will put a ton of damage down the field. These robots are great at taking mid table and holding it for the entire game, fending off enemy units. The Adeptus Mechanicus are a great army in new Warhammer 40,000 and are not only very fun to play but also to play against. Now replace those weak fleshy parts of your body and prepare to give homage to the Omnissiah! Frankie is part of the team that runs some of the biggest independent Warhammer 40,000 events in the world, including the Las Vegas Open, the Bay Area Open and the recently announced Southern California Open. An avid player for years, with an impressive tournament record, he’s also been part of the playtest team for the new edition of Warhammer 40,000, putting in hundreds of hours to make sure this new edition will be great for all you gamers out there (Thanks Frankie!). So, basically, he knows his stuff.

  24. In the Points section, the Scytals are listed as pairs, but the DeathSpitter is listed as singular. I assume this is to leave them the freedom to, at some point, introduce a Model that uses a single DeathSpitter with Slimer Maggots, but regardless of the reason, it's pretty clear to me that it's 10 Points per MC DeathSpitter*. There would be some notation about pairs, or it would be listed as "two DeathSpitters with Slimer Maggots", or something like that, if it were 10 Points for the pair. *That would be an awesome name for a rapper.

  25. Logan - 6/10 - This is purely based on personal preferences. The movie was just a drag, from start to finish. I kept waiting on some "feel good" moment...but it never arrived. Just not my cup of tea. I don't see the point of having a purely depressing movie. Life gets that way all on its own sometimes. I want my movie time to be a fun experience.

  29. Look, ultimately it doesn't matter. Either they are wrong and your units in transports count towards half of your army on the table (they do count) or they are right and it still won't matter because it will FAQed in a month. However it sounds like to me, you need to get some new people to play with.

  41. Last week, we had a look at some of the new rules for the Forge World miniatures covered in Imperial Armour Index: Space Marines and Imperial Armour Index: Chaos.| Today we take a look at some units from Imperial Armour Index: Xenos. We’ll start off with a Tyranid, one of the most popular Forge World additions to the hive fleet forces in the last edition due to both its durability, synapse and protective gas-cloud aura – the Malanthrope. We can see from the range of useful abilities this guy has, he’ll likely still be seen in many forces. Next up, the Ork Meka-Dread. With the increase in vehicle durability, and the deadliness of combat, Ork Dread-based armies become a very viable option, and this bruiser is the guy you want at the front of the charge: Our final preview is of the XV109 Y’vahra Battlesuit. This highly mobile cousin of the Riptide dishes out just as much devastating firepower as he did last edition, so you’ll still see plenty of these advanced Battlesuits on the battlefield. All these of these units, as well as the full Tyranid, T’au Empire, Ork, Aeldari and Necron ranges of Forge World models are covered in the upcoming Imperial Armour Index: Xenos, available soon and designed to be used with the new edition of Warhammer 40,000.

  44. As I noted in an earlier post, my preferred distribution for my 3 points of warriors is 10, 10, and 4. If the game goes well the unit of 4 warriors spends the entire game where it was deployed. If the game goes less well, it spends the second half of the game in a "strategic retreat" in order to preserve the SAGA die that it generates. This small unit doesn't see much action, but that doesn't mean it has to be an easily forgettable unit of grunts. To jazz up the unit, I assembled it from cool command models that I couldn't fit into my other units or baggage models. Perhaps this unit represents the century's aging centurion and his bodyguards. Except for their bases, the first two models are done.
