"MORTAL KOMBAT dun dund undun" I dunno, Liu Kang using the Wonder Twins to defeat Sub Zero is up there. And casting Ghost Rider as Scorpion was a very progressive move in a time Hollywood was largely shaming and type casting ethereal actors. 1
VonVilkee
Valerian 8/10 Solid great movie so glad we went to see it. Great visuals and acting, little predictable, okay allot predictable but that is what lost it points.
WestRider
Rewatched Blade. Hadn't seen it since it was in the theater. Other than some of the CGI effects, it actually holds up really well. There was one thing that really weirded me out, tho. A while back, I got really into the series Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, in which Udo Kier voices one of the main antagonists. He doesn't change up his voice there at all, so he sounds exactly the same when he's playing Dragonetti in Blade. I kept expecting him to start going on about the Planispheric Disc.

Or we'll be terribly underwhelmed...... stay tuned
Raindog
xXx. This movie was absolutely improbable and ridiculous. It seemed like a comedy, but I think they wanted to be serious. It could have been worse. OVerall. Not bad to paint to while watching. 6/10. London Falling. Improbable and needing a better lead. Essentially, it is Escape From New York without Jake Piskan. 7/10 Both are on Net Flix
Swan-of-War
American Fable 8/10 Netflix drama, for some reason I thought it was a series but its just a movie. Not bad for a chill night viewing
Romans832
Valerian - 8/10 - We saw it in 3D thinking the previews sure made 3D look like the best route to go... It was good 3D, but it's almost like the cheesed the 3D... or maybe they came back and over did the 3D scenes to really pop them... Not sure, but many of the scenes where they popped it was comicy/fake... if I'm making sense. Then there were other parts where it was flat... No clue. Preview for Wrinkle in Time looks like it might be a 3D candidate too
WestRider
Europa Report: Solid SF flick. For some reason, some of the promo material was trying to push it as a horror flick, which it's not, even tho it does share some superficial characteristics with the genre. Yes, a number of the characters are killed, but there's no intentionality to the deaths. They're just accidents or the result of insufficient testing/advance surveying/training. Really quite good as a speculative fic about the first human exploration of another world, as long as you don't go into it expecting a horror flick. Could plausibly be set up as a prequel to Ocean, by Warren Ellis, which is also set on Europa, but much farther in the future.
WestRider
Comforting Skin: A lot of it is kind of too hipsterish, and I found it pretty depressing in some ways because I can identify way too well with the main character, but it also has some really good parts. The ending sucked, tho.
Romans832
War for the Planet of the Apes - 8/10 - I get it, But I had hoped a little more from the ending. Excellent plot twists.
WestRider
Blade Trinity: I never did get around to watching it when it first came out. I liked it quite a lot better than most people seemed to. There were some bits that were rough, but it wasn't bad overall. My main issue was that the villain reminded me too much of Angel. Well, that wouldn't necessarily be so bad, but I mean like Buffy Season 1 Angel, when Boreanaz couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag. But the Nightstalkers were cool, it cleared up a couple of plot holes from the first movie, and it could be taken as an actual conclusion to the story if you wanted to. Also, Ryan Reynolds makes everything better. 2
WarlordGhrom
Detroit 8/10 - heavy, heavy film. Don't go in expecting to leave feeling good about the world we still live in. Very well done, but damn it is heavy.

Brother Glacius
Dunkirk - 7/10 - good solid movie. Not a hollywood picture. Just an accurate representation of what the people involved were going through. $15 a pop though at Hollywood theatre for the 70mm version. Ouch.
WestRider
The Amazing Spider-Man: When it first came out, I was still burnt out on Spider-man from the previous Trilogy, and particularly didn't want to see yet another retelling of his origin story. Pulled it up tonight, and tho it's hit and miss (the whole dinner scene with the seeming major importance of the branzino, was particularly cringe-worthy), the hits are really good. Both his major fights with the Lizard are great (as with Ang Lee's version of The Hulk, I particularly liked how this gave a really vivid impression of just how strong these guys are), arguably Stan Lee's best cameo, and the crane sequence is possibly the Crowning Moment of Awesome for the Spider-Man movies.

Romans832
Life - 6/10 - They could have ended the movie at 45 minuts. But no one knows how to follow protocol! Ending was sadly predictable... I hate when, even I, see it coming. I'm dense when it comes to reading movies, but the ending was duh. WestRider
The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Still pretty good, but it doesn't hold together as well as the first one did. Kind of reminds me of my reaction to CACW, actually: The two main characters are great, and have a really solid arc, but they tried to cram too much else in, and of the three villains, the one who got the most time was the one that failed to really "click". Would have been better with more time for the Rhino, and less of Electro, or if Electro had been less over the top, or something. Lady Bloodfight: A gender-swapped remake of Bloodsport. Substantially worse than the original. That at least had legit, if sometimes* more flashy than would be used in fights like that, martial arts. And that is pretty much its one worthwhile feature. Too much of the choreography is Bloodfight is drawn instead from what's been popularized in films and tv over the decade since then, and there isn't enough in the way of plot or acting to make up the difference. It also maintains the original's seeming inability to tell the difference between Japanese and Chinese, and adds enough of a plot that plot holes become a possibility. It was also kind of weird how closely the two matched each other in some structural regards, despite substantial differences of genre. Most notably, in both cases, the protagonist is driven by issues related to their absent father, and there's a major secondary character who is murdered purely to hurt the protagonist, who they almost manage to save. But there are a bunch of other little things, too. I guess it's just all part of the homogeneity of blockbusters (or films that are trying for that status, at least) these days. *The fights involving Van Damme are the worst offenders, particularly the last one, but even some of his are pretty good, and most of the "background" matches are between people who were actual martial arts masters. Almost all of the parts that don't feel right are almost certainly the result of these guys training for points-scored tournaments, instead of the knock-out/ring out/submission victories in the film's tournament. But overall, it's a pretty good representation of pre-MMA international martial arts competition. That got longer than I expected. tl;dr: Amazing Spider-man 2 is worth a watch, Lady Bloodfight isn't.
WestRider
Got a couple from the last few days, again, horror entries from Netflix. 1 bad, 2 good. The Black Room is the bad one. I had kind of hoped that Natasha Henstridge was finally going to get a decent horror movie to be in, but nope. It tries to mix in basically softcore porn with the usual horror formulas, but ends up with some of the least erotic nudity I've ever seen, along with some really bad acting and effects that look like something from the 80s. Demonic is a variation on the usual Found Footage horror. Cops find one survivor from a group of ghost hunting kids, but he's barely coherent. The story then builds as they manage to get more details from him as well as piece together some of the recordings they made, so the found footage sort of illustrates and expands on his fragmentary testimony. The Devil's Candy is a variant on the Possessed House horror flick, but with some cool variations. I also liked it because it felt like maybe the first movie I've seen that really gets some of the generational changes that are going on, like Slayer not being something the rebellious kid listens to, but something the dad grew up with, and what a huge deal actually purchasing a house can be.

I dug him as the bad guy and he wasnt the dork in a romantic comedy. The story was fair but not really original and you could tell they jammed a lot from 7-ish books into a 2 hour movie. Totally agree with 8/10
