And replace Eva Green with a cute faux-English girl. And replace the hard bodies with Aaron Paul's kinda doughy-with-perpetually-furled-eyebrows look. I've read the book a few times, and the movie does follow the book pretty well, but this one feels like a cliff notes version of the book. The acting fits the setting very well too. The odd bit was that I think the book was short enough to do as a movie, provided they skimmed the action scenes, not unlike how the book portrays them. I did find it as a very odd movie from a hollywood standpoint. There is no love story. It has a climax that you don't realize has happened until after it has already been resolved. There is also a lack of character growth, as ender is potrayed with the same attitude and resolve in the entire movie. It also seems to have a lack of moral resolution, which may be hinted at in the final scenes, but it won't be until the sequel book were the plot from ender's game starts getting resolved. I kept waiting for them to screw it up, like Hollywood always does, but they didn't. Computer animation is subtle and consistent. Setting, casting, dialogue and costumes match. It captures the Japanese samurai film perfectly, despite being marketed to a non-Japanese audience. I watch the film and keep forgetting that it's in English, instead of Japanese with subtitles. All that said, I can totally see both why it was such a high budget movie and why it failed so badly in the theaters. It isn't for kids or for those seeking just another action movie. Started watching it thinking "Another crappy Keanu movie" and it turned out really well done. Escape Plan - 7/10. Not bad with Arnold and Sly, funny moments and some drama. Delivery Man - 7/10. tombking Posted March 30, 2014 Report Share Posted March 30, 2014 Journey To The West : Conquering The Demons : 10/10 : A fun new telling of the beginning of China's most epic fantasy from Stephen Chow. My kid was kinda wait thats the end? as they walked off into the sunset just beginning the actual journey. I hope Stephen Chow has more planned but I am also interested in the first of a series from the same source books that has Donnie Yen as Sun Wu-Kong and goes into his backstory in full before he sets off on the journey that is supposed to be out now but being a Hong Kong film I probably will not get a chance to see it on the big screen. It does feel similar to some of his other movies (Casino in particular), but with more focus on 80's style greed and excess. A lot of "OMG! Did that really happen?" moments in this movie; it could be shocking to some viewers. If you get a chance, couple this with American Hustle for an amazing double-feature. This movie deserves a 10/10 from me, great action, intriguing character growth, mysterious dystopian future, and finally strong female lead. Based on the first book in a series aimed at middle schoolers it really has positive messages through out delivered in a gritty school of hard knocks way. Extremely well done. I can't wait for the rest of the series! Set in a future where you are put in a clan based on how you think, you either think inside that box and are controllable, or you think outside the box and are divergent. Divergence is dangerous and not good for society. With a name like divergent you can guess where this is going... The kids have to pick their house/clan/whatever at a middling teen age, if they leave the house of their parents there is no going back so their is strong emotional ties to the decision. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

That said, i didn't realize that is what I was watching until I just looked it up on Google. In conclusion, I'd give it a 3 or a 4 if I watched it on Netflix. To me, that's saying a lot with how much it's like Hunger Games and with how little (read: not at all) I liked that movie. Divergent is worth watching, although if you are single, wait until it's on Netflix or Redbox. It'd be a little creepy if you went to see it on theater, especially taking into account what VV said above. Otherwise, wtf are you talking about? The two movies are nothing alike. I liked Divergent much better than hunger games. And as a father, I am so glad my daughter loves Divergent. I went and saw it with her and her face was lit up like Christmas morning the whole time (she's 13 and has read the book like 7 times). My only issue with Divergent was that there wasn't enough background for the world. I got how Chicago worked, but there seemed to be strange technology separations between the groups and an unexplained lack of info about the outside world. Perhaps the book explains all this. tombking Posted April 5, 2014 Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 Lady Terminator : part of me wants to say 3/10 another part of me wants to say 10/10 : So yeah this Indonesian mystical power rip off of Terminator opens with a sex scene with the Sea Queen and husband number whatever she is unsatisfied so her ladybits become a weapon or something and kill the poor guy with an orgasm of blood. She dismounts and comments "Will no man ever satisfy me?" and then her 100th husband steals her magic knife or something driving her out she vows revenge 100 years later. The movie gets dumber, and weirder from there. The acting is awful, the action is hilariously cheesy, and the dialog is just so so so cliche and perfect for the movie and oh yeah the Lady Terminator spends a lot of time on screen naked/topless so speaking as a hetero male that was a bonus. Actually the whole cast is kind of an odd ensemble, but everyone plays their parts very well in this very dark and dismal future state where the world is frozen over and all life exists on a "super train". In the special effects, yes, but also in terms of boundaries. The Cenobites are talking about pushing the boundaries of human experience, but what I'm seeing on the screen is basically a slow Tuesday on ModBlog. I exaggerate, but the basic point stands. EDIT: Hellraiser 2 is much the same. These guys are really one trick ponies with the hooked chain thing. I'll admit, the overall plot of "individuality" was somewhat lacking, but I would have been completely satisfied with 3 hours of Lego Medieval battles with no plot at all.
