New Army For 2013-14: Nurgley Beastmen Blog

Recommended Posts

Today I actually found some time to be productive!  I got a base coat down on 28 nurglings, 2 razorgor, and a possible gorebull.  More importantly I'm working on a converted gorebull BSB which I'm really excited about.  Tomorrow I should have some time to get a little more done, but with work it might not happen.  When I get a chance I'll throw up some new pictures.

I put off posting this for awhile because I was bummed out.  Work has been nuts lately, and with us losing an employee I have to back out of the black sheep brawl and work that weekend.  For OFCC I still plan to have this army ready, but its going to take some discipline to get going on all the work I still need to do.

I'm hoping to be able to make it to a sunday game soon.  It's been almost 2 months and I am itching to bloody up a table.

Alright!  Brawl has come and gone, hopefully everyone had a kickass time down in Salem.

While I missed out on the event, I plan full well to have a fully painted 2k for the spring escalation league.  That being said, I need to get on it!   Between work and girlfriend my free time is limited and random, so I'm going to try and start with small goals.  This week's goal is to finish another 10 ungor, and if I have extra time I will work on getting some base coats done on my razorgors.

With me luck, I will post progress when it's made!

Escalation starts this week!  Because of a work meeting I'll have to leave around 4:45, but I will be back around 6ish.  Hopefully somebody will still be willing to get in a quick game or two with me and the beasties.  I'm going bold at 1500 and starting off with no magic.  Feel free to absolutely wreck me in the magic phase, I'm going for all-out combat and close-up face-melting.

On the painting front I have 12 ungors done, but I need to finish the bases on them.  I should have some time in the morning tomorrow to get them finished, and then to either work on the second chariot or start painting my razorgors.

I challenge everyone, consider the gauntlet thrown!

Great night for the beasts!

First off, I want to thank Iraf and RD for two great games.

Against Iraf I won due to luck.  His main block ran from panic, and did not stop running.  I gladly accept the victory, but look forward to a game where we can bash each other's heads in a little more.

RD and I had a much closer game.  He kept my bestigor unit in the backfield for most of the game, but my bulls managed to whittle down one of his blocks of longbeards and run them off the board.  It was a very close match, and I narrowly edged out another win.  In the future I might not be so lucky.

Lessons learned:

-Bestigors are great, but I need to get them out into the battle and not block them up in the my deployment zone.

-Magic is fun, but not always a game-changer.

-Never count on impact hits.

Last week I got in two games, one with Shane and another game with RD.  The games were close, and if I had another turn against RD then I would have been able to pull out a victory (even though my army had almost entirely been wiped off the table).   Still, I was able to get a ton of scenario points out of booth games by sticking in the forest.

Everyone seems to be trying out some MSU/MMU lists, so let's give it a go this week!  This will require some heavy proxies, but I doubt anyone will mind.

Lords - 350

Doombull - Flying Carpet, Talisman of Preservation, Charmed Shield, Great weapon

Heroes - 341

Wargor - Beast Banner, Garled hide, Heavy Armor, Great weapon

Bray Shaman - Level 2 Shadow, Dispel Scroll

Core - 423

42 Gors - Extra hand Weapon, Full Command

10 Ungor Raiders

Special - 485

Razorgor

Razorgor

5 Centigors

5 Centigors

5 Centigors

Alright, I realize that a 42 man unit is far from small, but I need something big to anchor down my line.  Hopefully the list will have some luck, because I will need it!

Well, the list worked out with mixed results.  Against Fixxer's Slaanesh WoC I lost a tight game which had a lot of potential tipping points.  The centigors did a decent job in combat, but once anything serious hits them they deteriorate pretty quickly.  Still, they did a good job at keeping pressure on enemy units, and giving me a speedy edge.

Against RD's Dwarfs, I got destroyed.  I had to get across as fast as I could to engage him in combat, but the majority of my army fell to shooting.  My BsB did his best in combat...is a lie.  He got popped in one round by a master engineer.  *sigh*  Oh well.

I can see where the centigors have potential.  They have an enormous charge range and hit like a truck in the first round of combat.  If they were a bit cheaper or had the fast cav rule then they would be worth it.  For now I think they are a bit weak for their points, but I will continue to test them.

Thanks again for the games, Fixxer and RD!

I think Centigor's are the hidden gem of the Beastmen list right now, but definately require some practice/backup

Like you said, they're one of the few things that can really put and keep on the pressure, while redeploying more rapidly then Chariots. Most Beast armies seem to see pressure for the magical dominance of the Herdstone. I can see the merits, but don't enjoy being on the back foot.

I think Centi's are the missing piece when people run out the all killy Doombull/GoreBeast and have him croak due to a lack of support or being to obvious on it's target points.

I definitely think that they have a place in the army, but I need to get in a little more practice with them to see what works best.  A unit of 10 might be a great flanking/small unit killer, but it could also be too big of an investment.  They could be fun for the OFCC though, so I'll post a list in a few that includes them.

Another possible OFCC build!  This one is full of different units and quick, fighty goodness.

Lords - 691
Doombull (general) - Armor of Destiny, Sword of Swift Slaying, OTS, Shield
Doombull - Flying Carpet, Talisman of Preservation, Charmed Shield, Great Weapon

Heroes - 341
Wargor - Beast Banner, Gnarled Hide, Heavy Armor, Shield
Bray Shaman - Level 2, Dispel Scroll

Core - 705
50 Gors - Extra Hand Weapon, Full Command (BsB in here)
Tuskgor Chariot
Tuskgor Chariot
10 Ungor Raiders (Shaman in here)
5 Ungor Raiders
5 Ungor Raiders

Special - 415
Razorgor
Razorgor
Razorgor (or 5 harpies)
5 Centigor
5 Centigor

Rare - 635
Ghorgon
8 River Trolls (General in here)

This list is full of weak points, but so are most beastmen armies.  Leadership is the main issue, as my general is only an 8, and magic isn't exactly a huge factor here either.  Still, the army has lots of small, fast chaff to get in and start messing with my opponent quickly.  The two large units will hold the main battle line while the flying bull, centigors, and ghorgon go forward to start mashing things up.  Hopefully the pressure that I can put on the other player will give me a chance to safely get my big blocks across the board and into combat, while the razorgor can function as diverters or warmachine hunters.

I love centigors, but the suffer badly from being over costed and vulnerable to every magic missile ever.

Not saying they suck, just another tool. No single unit in that book should be left unsupported. It's a synergy book through and through.

I don't really see that as a downside, but rather an upside given the target saturation going on. There's only so many MM out there and lots of worth while targets in a Beastmen army via Centi's, Chariots, Harpies, Pumbagor's, Mino's and any of the monsters.

Definately a syngergy book. The more I gander through the Beastmen book, the more I like it. Most things seem to be overcosted but it still looks possible to put together a fun, challanging list.

Synergy for sure.  Getting primal fury off in combat seems to be more and more essential as I play more games, so leadership can be a real issue.  But the rest of the army needs to work well on it's own.  Beasts has a ton of great chaff and diverter units, and to get the most out of a game they need to be used.  I didn't take my usual small units of raiders this week, and I definitely missed them.

The overcosting is an issue with something, but I think more for internal balance than external.  The rare section is almost never used because none of the options are worth their points.  Ghorgons are probably the closest, but are still not going to be worth their 275 compared to other choices.  In pairs though, they will rip an army apart.

No body can chaff up a board like beast men that is for sure!

Primal Fury is so critical I'd wager its worth an LD battery just for that alone.

I agree that the rare slots are mediocre, but my god is the jabberwock a cool model.

Then again I'm the guy that things lore of the wild is awesome, so what do.I know?

If OFCC were a competitive event then I would consider changing the list to have at least leadership 9 from the general.  Since it's a fun, sporty event, I couldn't care less.  It will still be fun to smash face, I just need to try and not panic off the board before getting to said faces for smashing.

I'll give a beastlord a shot at some point.  He's tough, but is a giant point sink, so we will have to see how effective he can be.

For now I'm working on this week's list.  It's probably going to be similar to last week with some more core to fill up my requirement.  The centigors diserve another shot, so I'll run them for at least one more week.  Maybe this time I'll try one unit of 5 and one unit of 10, see how that goes.

I'm home sick from work today, so I'm getting some modeling work done on my BsB and other models.  I'm loaning out my camera to a friend, but here is a really crappy picture of my BsB.

Once that all sets the standard will get a couple layers of liquid green to make it look more gnarly and fleshy.  If I'm motivated then I might work on another chariot, but I might just try to sleep.

Wings are on!  Hopefully they are stable enough to stay in place, I have high hopes that they will.  All that's left now is to clean up the joints, fill in some cracks, and get the rest of the modeling done on the tree trunk.

I'm short on free time this week, but I'm hoping to have a handful more models painted up by the weekend.

My snails from Scibor came in!  The models are great, and are perfect for the army.  Little snails to make up my centigors, a bigger one as a unit filler in the 10-man, another large one for one of my trolls, and the giant snail for a ghorgon.  I have some pictures, but my camera is currently taking a trip to Amsterdam with a friend.  Until then I just have some crappy ones that I got with my webcam.

10-man Centigor:

Ghorgon:

Trolls and Doombull:

And this little fella, who I can use for the lower-level transformation as a hydra:

Again, sorry for the bad pictures, there will be better ones in a few weeks (hopefully).   The majority of the army is assembled now, I'll be able to focus my time and energy on getting things painted up.  Starting to get excited for the finished product!
