Now that's a real Faction Focus article. Shame they held Frankie back with the Chaos one. When they saw the backlash, they opened it up for Reece to discuss more.

I dunno if they held Frankie back so much as he just didn't consider sharing specific rules. On the frontline site his articles were always at the surface level. The focus reads very much like each of them.

I have info privy to the topic as an FLG writer.

Like holy cow man. If the hype is to believed, then we shall see so many variations of forces out on the tabletop. That is something I am very excited to see. It also appears having well rounded tool like lists will also be a good thing.

this was my primary hope for 8th.  I play SO many forces (all but three to be exact) that it has never, for me, been about which faction was good.  It was the potential restrictions on what I could play and still feel I wasn't grinding up hill.  I am annoyed that I have literal armies worth of Eldar and armies worth of Necrons and armies worth of Tau Empire that haven't gotten any real action because the components as a whole could only be included here and there and never together.

We'll see how much THAT changes but I am hoping my collection gets a strenuous workout.  My WHOLE collection.

I don't think anyone was worried Eldar would be underpowered. :)

The reasonable concerns with Eldar are more about internal balance than the Faction's power level overall, I think.

And Power Rating lists are going to be great for quick pickup games, I think. Definitely interested for tomorrow, seeing how granular they get with the Matched Play Points.

The other shoe is going to fall soon...

I'm not sure what to think about power levels. I imagine all or pretty damn close to all of my games will be played using points so it's not a big deal, but it just seems unnecessary.

Why have a unit's value described with two separate and incompatible currencies? Aren't you just doubling your chances of getting it wrong? I mean, I guess you're doubling your chances of getting it half-right too...

Maybe that's why they did it, they either got it right or wrong before and now half-right is possible.

Not trying to be cynical, just seems like a lot of extra work for (possibly) slightly faster list writing for pick-up games.

It's a concession to how other games do list creation.  Warmahordes plays at 75 pts and units are typically either 3 or 5 models or else 5 or 10 models for set points, and then extra points for specialist models.

It's a lot faster to make lists and more restrictive.

According to one of the earlier posts, the main intention for the less detailed points system was for Narrative Games, where the forces involved are going to be more determined by the story, and they're basically just a rough double-check for "is this going to be horribly unbalanced, or is it at least reasonable?", or as a guide to just how unbalanced a scenario is if you want something asymmetrical (like a Last Stand sort of thing). They aren't really intended for pickup Games, but I suspect they're going to get used there fairly often.

I got a buddy who never really gets out of his house and is terrified of the store game, don't know why but whatever. He doesn't spend energy being absolutely efficient with his points I struggle sometimes to dial back. I like to think that with power levels I can just take what I have ready give him a power level to shoot for a little higher than mine kinda like a handicap. Competitive points still wouldn't really work for this... tried it but I could take the low end of the power steps while he takes the higher end and we would still "be the same" while giving him a bit more...

I like the idea of the Power Level stat. I wish AoS had them. I think it will be really helpful for teaching new players. No need to bog them down with exact point values. You pick your unit, pick the size, and you know the power level. Very easy to say "lets play 50pts or 100pts" and you have models on the table in minutes and playing instead of wasted 30min building an exact list.

I love the Power Level stat personally. Great way of just rounding off a point value for quick simple play.

Wouldn't want to touch it when I'm being competitive for sure, fine tuned points will win out there. But just a, "Hey, I haven't played in 3 years and am looking to get back into it, grab a 100 power level game?". Means I don't have to get bogged down with which upgrades to take, I can mix the upgrades as I see fit to try things out, and get on the table in minutes.

I see it as a fantastic middle ground. Also would help with newer people. Remember how intimidating list build is when you're first picking up the game? Less so, but still present for a new army.

The more time spent slapping models down and rolling dice, and less time spent pouring over a spreadsheet (or app) is better in many cases.

Yeah Warmachine got way out of hand with their points.  75 point games are absurd.  Lol.  I know WHY people want to play with as many toys as possible but dayam.  When it forces tournaments to use stop clocks for peoples turns...theres just too many models on the table (relative to that game system).  Hehehe.

You obviously haven't played enough Mk3.  They virtually doubled all the points of everything in order to get more variation in points.  75 pt game is roughly equivalent of a 50 pt Mk2 game in terms of model counts.
