InfestedKerrigan
I'm currently using Gun Metal over black primer for my metal basecoats and it isn't dark enough for me. Suggestions for a darker basecoat metallic?
spagunk
Have you tried putting nuln oil (or whatever it is called now) to tone down the metal and give it shading?
InfestedKerrigan
I use blue and green ink instead, as they add variance when coated with clear red. I'm looking for smoother, though. The inks don't blend smoothly for me, but darker metal would in the airbrush.

InfestedKerrigan
You posted about those sometime back, didn't you?
VonVilkee
Yeah the paints in general I more recently was going through the metalics trying to find a dark metal for painting a malifaux mini. That is when I noticed 2 or three shades darker than gun metal. Also the metals in silver are named after heavy metal. Goes from "speed" an almost white to black metal which is super dark; for my project I settled on death. 1
VonVilkee
They recently launched their own USA distribution, they are Spanish. scale75usa.myshopify.com/collections/metal-n-alchemy The fantasy range is brighter, the alchemy line is crazy metallic colors, scale 75 is their base line super matte plus metalics. To give an idea heavy metal is their gun metal. Decayed metal looks to be my death metal, it is darker than gun but in a brown way if that makes sense. Brick Bungalow
I like mixing a drop of black ink with my metallic paint for the first layer.

Gloss or flat? Have you played with that?
Brick Bungalow
It's just India ink which dries somewhat glossy if you apply straight to a figure. I don't really know of any matte finish inks. Just a tiny drop though. It will significantly darken the paint even at 20 to 1. Normally I want my metallics to have significant luster anyway. InfestedKerrigan
I read "a glob of chaos black" not ink. Whoops.
Brick Bungalow
I do sometimes mix paint as well but that's quite different. Paint doesn't just darken it reduces the effect of the metallic flecks much more dramatically than ink. Sometimes this is the effect I want but not always.
happycamper
Vallejo Air Metallics, the way to go. The are super smooth, can be used without the Airbrush, and there is a black metallic and their gun metal is darker than leadbleacher
