Dark Age Tournament - Win Trip to GenCon?

Dark Severance

Recommended Posts

I am not a Dark Age player although this has actually got me more interested in playing it. Some of the miniatures I like, some I don't but overall the game is fairly straight forward from what I've seen. I've been busy playing other games to take time to play this but for winning a trip to GenCon, I might have to take a closer look.

I'm trying to see if anyone is playing this and if there is interest in this for the prizes alone.

Rules are Free

They believe that people should not be charged simply for the privilege to play the game. You can enjoy our game, you pick up the miniatures, you spread the word, and the community grows, simple as that.  The full Rulebook is always available for download: DARK AGE CORE RULES

The Stat Cards for all models in our game are likewise provided free: STAT CARDS

Yearly Updates

They give their game, rules and models, yearly evaluations to keep everything balanced. Balance is important in any miniatures game, and one broken unit can ruin a whole army. Likewise, it's a sucky feeling when you find a unit you love... Only to find out they suck... We hate that feeling as well. As such, we've taken the following measures to fix that:

Our rulebook is updated yearly: Each year we release a new rulebook to fix any issues or grievances. It's important to note with this, however, two factors:
  1. The Core Rules are a $20 book if you want to have a physical copy.
  2. Anytime we release a new Rule Book you can trade in any previous one for a new one.... Free of charge.
  3. So yes, once you have a rulebook, you're in for life.
Each year we review all our models. If one is overpowered, we fix it, if one is underpowered, we fix it. All models should be viable at all times, aka, you should be able to play what you think is cool.

Full Tournament Support

The tournament series is the March to Immortality, leading up to the Immortals at GenCon. If you host an MTI tournament at your store and you get at least 24 entries the prize you're fighting for is a Round-Trip Plane Ticket to Gencon. A store can be awarded 1 ticket a month doing so.

At GenCon you will then play in the Immortals and for winning you get to work with their development staff to make a model based on yourself or a concept to your liking

2010's Immortal winner was Marc Berlove. When he won, he decided he wanted to include his eight year old son. As a result, the Bounty Hunter duo Phadras and Maximo were born:

Skirmish Game- 5-12 models on average

Dark Age is a true skirmish game, and even at higher point levels you probably won't break 10-12 models per side (and that's at the highest standard game level, 1000 points)

Scenario Based

Sure, you can kill 'em all. Our game slogan is EVERYTHING DIES, but if you just play like that you'll be missing out on the depth we offer. Dark Age is Scenario based. Currently our Tournament format features six primary scenarios and twelve secondary scenarios. At GenCon. when we update our Tournament Document for the 2015 season, that number will be growing to 8-10 Primary Scenarios and 30 Secondary Scenarios.

Eight Distinct Factions

They should have something for everyone in the fact since they have eight main factions, each composed of a number of Sub-Factions, each with their own playstyle. They also strive to avoid "Faction bloat", aka adding stuff to armies just for the sake of adding. When they view a faction as "done" it's done. They love adding new sub-factions and such, but more models for more models is pointless..

Low Cost of Entry

The starters are $50 or less and give you 300 points, which is perfectly fine for playing games. The tournament level is 500 points, which is 1-2 blisters away. For basically less than $100 investment you can have a full, tournament viable army.

The mechanics were ok, a little on the bland side for me but man a trip to gencon wow that would be awesome.

So we are talking about a store being able to give out a plane ticket once a month or a raffle ticket for entry? I can't believe they will be able to support the possibility of a dozen plane tickets nationwide.

I don't have details on the March to Immortality for 2015 yet. From looking at previous tournament support it is a round trip ticket to GenCon, not a raffle. It makes sense when you think about it is a pretty effective sales campaign. Let's say it costs $100 for a 500 point army. You need at least 24 pre-registered players for an event to qualify for the ticket. At that time they have made $2400 in sales, which means they can throw out a $500+ plane ticket fairly easily. If they are smart their tickets are done through points anyways so it doesn't really cost them that much.

For continued play yes I can see that being an issue. For a regional type tournament where it is scheduled a couple months in advance, it might not be too hard. From what I can see there isn't anything requiring the tournament to be a 500 point tournament, it could probably do fine with a 300 point battle. The only issue obviously is if someone wins then they would really want a 500 point army to play in the tournament at GenCon. Ideally it would be awesome to do these once a month, but that is more a pipe dream because you'd need at least 30 players (since once someone wins they can't participate, that makes it limiting).

Key would be regular events leading up to create a drive than a large scale tourney.

Hard part is you need to build a tourney setting that I think is harder than a casual gaming group. I will pick up and try to go if that is the prize.

I haven't found a decent online retailers although I've been comparing prices. I should of picked up models while I was at GenCon this year but I didn't hear about this until afterwards. I did order some for the wife and me to play through their website.

Just waiting on my Battle Systems terrain to arrive, which should hopefully be this week or next week.

It caught my eye @Adepticon 2012 and I picked up boxes and a couple blisters for Skarrd and Brood, also a few blisters of clear resin ice elementals for Malifaux. The studio paint was as good as I have ever seen, and the sculpts, well were interesting and occasionally outstanding. There seemed to be zero interest locally and after Confrontation I am reluctant to champion any game. There are so many excellent choices now it is hard for any one system to achieve critical mass.

It looks like choices made to support Dark Age are intelligent, forward looking, indicate a commitment, and faith in the game. It might have legs. I would be willing to travel to Bellingham or Portland once a month or so to support a Dark Age group. As much as I like the Air Caste I should start with what I have. Skarred for life
