Still working on the sitmap with all units in their initial starting positions (as of 5/6 June).

Will post that, soon.

I will also periodically update the sitmap, to the sound of bugles, bagpipes, or wailing, depending on the weekly results.

No, I don't have the sound clips.

Don't expect fancy newspaper articles or detailed AARs from me. Have a day job that is more than "full time".

Might post a few pics, from time to time.

If someone else is so inclined to write up AARs, please do. My writing style is factual, but not entertaining.

Since the Normandy battles scenarios align closely with our Turn0 second half of June 6, I am leveraging those to get an easier start.  Points in most of these scenarios are around 1250. We might get 2 or more battles in on Thursday, if we keep it smaller, in the beginning.

I took the liberty of writing up the Axis OPORD, this time, attached below.

Cannot post Axis OPORD nor sitmap here. Seems I hit the measely limit on uploads for my account.

One file is only 109K, but upload is refused.

Will print them out, and bring on Thursday.

We need email, or a way to post files above the account file limit, for the next turn.

I will also save files to USB drive.

Axis OPORD, for Thursday, June 11

ArmeeOberKommando 7
Operationsbefehl 19440606A

1. THE ENEMY  SITUATION: The “Allied Forces” have landed and established beachheads on the northern coast of Normandy. Infantry regiment to division-sized forces have established lodgments from Forreville, in the west, stretching eastward to the River Orne. Company-sized panzer forces have been reported 1-2 miles inland.  Total strength of the landing forces may be between 3 and 5 divisions.  Airborne and glider troops have landed in the Cotentin Peninsula, and in the flat plains between the River Orne, the River Dives and the city of Caen.  Currently, the beach forces are conducting shallow probes and attacks.  The main threat, and highest risk, is from the air-landing forces, since their strengths, locations and intentions are unknown. Expect that the enemy will receive fire support from offshore naval gunfire.  Weather conditions – medium rain – restricts air operations, and will force the naval artillery to rely on ground artillery observers.

2. THE FRIENDLY SITUATION: German infantry is stiffening their resistance along the 2nd defensive layer, which is the line running West to East along Ste. Mere Eglise (E5) - Brevands (F6) - ISIGNY (G7) - BAYEUX (J7) - Merville (M8).  Counterattacks are being prepared and the armor units are moving north to intercept the enemy.
Defensive Priorities are: 1) Contain the beachheads, and 2) Reinforce the 2nd layer of defense, then 3) Deny the enemy control of key road junctions and bridges.
Offensive Priorities are: 1) Immediate counterattacks on airborne forces, and 2) then counterattacks on the beachheads.

3. FRIENDLY INTENTIONS OF THE NEXT HIGHER UNIT: AOK7 and OKW WEST will move in reinforcements and offensive forces from adjacent sectors and Paris ASAP.  Corps and Army artillery is moving forward to engage the enemy, while remaining out of range of the naval guns.

4. SUBORDINATE UNIT ORGANIZATION AND COMBAT MISSION
4.1. Infantry: Contain the enemy on the beaches. Conduct local counterattacks against airborne landings.
4.2. Armor: Concentrate large KG counterattacks to control bridges across the Orne (NNE of Caen), and split off the eastern flank of the beach lodgment, vic Luc-sur-Mer.
4.3. Supporting armor: Assault guns and tank destroyer to blunt enemy armor incursions.
4.4. Reserves: Marshalled against air landings.
4.5. Antitank defense: Same as supporting armor.
4.6. Artillery: 1) Support the counterattacks, 2) Pin the enemy’s airborne forces until our security forces can mass and counterattack.
4.7. Engineers: 1) Support the panzer and panzer grenadier counterattacks, via mobility and counter mobility operations.
4.8. Signal communication: Re-establish contact in sectors where communications were disrupted.
4.9. Supply troops: Move supplies only at night or under cover of fog/smoke.
4.10. Other Support. No air support is available.

5. SUPPLY: All troops are currently well supplied.
5.1. Ammunition
5.2. Fuel
5.3. Equipment
5.4. Arms
5.5. Rations
5.6. Clothing
5.7. Equipment
5.8. Evacuation of sick and wounded

6. THE LOCATION OF THE COMMAND POST(s): LXXXIV at St. Lo. (G9), and AOK 7 at Le Mans (65 Miles S of CAEN [L8,L9]).

A combination of a board wargame, and tabletop WWII miniatures.

The board game is for the campaign, which in RPG terms, is the setting, or in this case, the historical WWII backdrop.

This may be similar to "Battle for Proteus Prime" for Firestorm Armada, "Dark Sun" for D&D, or "Planetary Empires" for Warhammer 40K

However, this setting is the historical military campaign in Normandy, France in June of 1944.

Poking around on your blog, I can see how the term "Firestorm Overload" could be conflated with Spartan Games' "Firestorm Planetfall: Ground Warfare"

The tabletop battles in "Firestorm Overlard"  are the tactical battles that feed back into the strategic campaign.

The rules used are

1) Battlefront's Firestorm system for the "boardgame" and

2) Battlefront's 3rd ed. "Flames of War" miniatures rules for the tabletop battles with 15mm WWII miniatures.

What is Flames of War?

<To paraphrase from the Open Fire starter book>

Flames of War is a miniatures wargame recreating, or re-enacting historical military engagements. All of the action takes place on a miniature battlefield, with model tanks and soldiers that represent the real-life troops that fought in the decisive battles of the Second World War.

You and your opponent are the commanders, pitting your wits and cunning against one another to attain victory and, more importantly, to have fun. Flames Of War allows you to re-fight the decisive battles of the Second World War. You take charge of Patton’s spearhead or Monty’s Desert Rats. Can you out-fox Rommel, the Desert Fox? Flames Of War lets you recreate history to find out.

This rulebook is your guide to fighting historical battles in miniature. With it you can take command of a company of soldiers and pit yourself against cunning opponents on the field of battle. You will see for yourself what made the Tiger tank so feared by every Allied soldier. You will find out if you have the guts to stop a massed infantry charge, or the cold-blooded ruthlessness to launch one!

Flames Of War combines the joys of painting and modelling your own miniature army with the challenge of facing off against your opponent across a  gaming table in a social setting, and you’ll get to recreate history—or change it!

Ahhh, beginning to understand...

Forgive my denseness, but this is the first campaign I've coordinated via forum.

"...how one participates in this campaign..."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = == = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

We had a kick-off event on a different thread:

http://www.ordofanaticus.com/index.php?/topic/24837-fow-and-d-day-june-6th/

and a lot occurred in-person, on June 6, that is not replicated here.

The boardgame part of the campaign level (strategic) is being run by myself and lazarus.

The table top level (tactical) is where old players and new ones can join in.

"...how they join it and what is required to participate."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = == = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

To join the miniatures battle level of campaign, just show up any Thursday evening at GG, in Portland at around 6 PM.

If you DO have miniatures for FoW "Late War" (LW), western front, bring them. If no minis, we can loan.

If you know the rules, even better.  If not current on rules, we can assist.

Joining simply requires 3 things, at a minumum:

1) Showing up,

2) A interest in playing

3) A willingness to learn the basics of the rules, as we go along.

If you want to get more involved, then rulebook=$10.

We can direct to free content on the website flamesofwar.com, to keep your costs down.

If you have minis, you can play them -- as long as they "fit" the locale and period.

If you want to try out an army, then buy, paint and play it, we can loan minis.

If you want most of this, but not the period, or not the campaign, then we can arrange some one-off games.

If you want to discuss in person, come on down on a thursday evening, @ GG, PDX. look for the reserved tabel sign: "Reserved for Flames of War"

I'll see you all next Thursday with painted minis:

British/Candadian Rifle company (painted roughly 50/50 Brit/Can), 3xArmoured Platoon (3xSherm III,1xFirefly Vc), Auster AOP, and Typhoon. If it rains, maybe the 25-pounders will get based. Hopefully these forces will be useful next week.

  • 2 weeks later...

Comrades round zero is over with the allies suffering punishing losses on the beaches and the landing zones.  The 82 has had to be withdrawn from the continent for refit after its landing zone was over run and the 101 airborne has been forced to flee tot he Utah beach zone.  Our loses have been minimal and morale is high we shall soon drive them into the sea.

Round one has begun.  The allied supporting attacks have all been stopped dead in their tracks by our gallant efforts to date.  Recon shows that there seems to be a big push towards vierville by the amis off of Utah beach and several heavy attack off of the British beaches, they seem to be trying to cut off the 710 infantry.  Little do they know that puts them right where we want them as we can attack in all directions now simplifying our battle plans.

We seized the beaches. We are landing reinforcements.  We've since had a few setbacks.  The 82nd Airborne took some heavy hits and are reconstituting.
But now we are primed and ready to break out from the beach heads.
We thought we would miss our chance to kick the butts of the Waffen schutzstaffel. Last that we heard, they were running from the Russians on the Eastern Front. But we got lucky!  They are coming to us.  Let's whup them now and send'em packing.
