Help getting back into FoW

A played flames of war about six years ago and loved it. I'm not really sure why I stopped playing, but I did. I had a good sized mid war Finnish company.

I need some help getting back into the game. Is mid war still being played, or do I need a late war army? Are the Finland forces playable in late war? If so, what book has their rules? And what point level is typical?

If I need a new late war army, any recommendations? I would probably be interested in a Soviet force to balance out against my Finland army.

And out of curiosity, does anyone play Great War? I have a love of that period in history.

Mid-war is played part of the year at GG, PDX.

Last year's Enfilade! FOW tournament was MW.

Finns have listings in LW. See Grey Wolf Intelligence handbook. So, yes, playable.

As for getting back in, if you are in PDX/couv area, we have regular game tables at Guardian Games, PDX every Thursday, 6-9:30.

If you are in PDX area, and cannot make THU PM, then we can arrange a game. I have Soviets: EW/MW/LW.

If you are elsewhere, then list your LGS or closest town(s), and someone from that area might post here.

lazarus and ZEKE both have been building up Great War Armies, and they have the book.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses.  Guardian Games is getting rid of FoW, and pushing it all out at 50% off, so I picked up the early war Finn book, as well as a 3rd ed main rulebook.  I then went nuts and picked up an entire late war Soviet tank company.  The Finn - Soviet battles are obviously the classic matchup, and this way I have two armies and can do either axis or allies, and either infinity or tank.  I'll need to pick up Grey Wolf and some odds and ends to make my Finns late war compliant, but I appear to be on track.

For the next two months I need to focus on 40k, but after the Las Vegas open in early February, I expect to switch my attention back to FoW, and will start showing up for Thursday game nights at Guardian.

I'm really looking forward to playing FoW again.  I loved the game, I have no idea really why I drifted away from it.

AP,

sorry to hijack your thread.

Getting back to your topic, our FoW group has events on GG's calendar.

We will be doing one or two pick-up games this Thursday, DEC 3 @ 6:00

BTW, if you want to expand your Finns to cover more periods, here is an article to chew on

A Force Throughout The Ages: Finns For Early, Mid, & Late-war

And for interesting flavor, there are 3 Finnish Warriors, LW:

Maybe you can convince her to carry Plastic Soldier Company or Blue Moon/Old Glory.

PSC and Old Glory(IE Skytrex), definitely.

Blue Moon, however, is a bit problematic.  I traded in my Blue Moon WWI French for store credit nearly a year ago because they're proportioned poorly and too big compared to other ranges.  They looked like giants with massive spears.

Also more Zvezda 1/100 stuff.  Most of what they've got's 1/72 stuff that's been collecting dust.

It makes decent sense from GG's prospective.  They've been having problems with battlefront undercutting them in different ways for years.  Years ago I remember there being a debacle where BF stopped sending their product to GG in a timely manner.  Then they started their web-only special order stuff, they cut pretty much all of the tournament support they used to give, the whole house thing that you couldn't get through the stores and now a 50% off online sale on the biggest retail weekend for stores in the US.  On top of all of that its not like Flames of War is exactly flying off the shelves at GG, it takes up almost as much space as Warmahordes and, I imagine, sells orders of magnitudes less product.

Xipetotec's right (except it was a 33% off online BF sale) ... and yes the 50% GG in-store sale is still on ... Probably till it's all gone (but alot still left to go ... as I was down there today). Problem is ... that GG will not support FOW (they are liquidating current stock and will no longer be carrying FOW and probably not giving us support for tourneys <possibly> also) going forward. That will include Team Yankee for those of you who are getting in (and this also throws off all the demo's that are planed for FOW games ... I don't see GG giving us any love in that direction since it's a game they will not be selling). We need to either double down and get someone at BF to step up and do some major damage control with GG or find another store to stock FOW ... (good luck with that). We have been lucky to have GG stock the enormous amounts that they have ... I agree with Xipetotec again ... that the FOW stuff does not exactly fly off the shelves for GG.

Ah, disruption, how thou dost sting me? Let me count the ways...

No. I will not.

Energy is better spent in navigating the storm than in cursing it.

We will surely reach a new equilibrium.

Question is whether we take action to have a hand in our fate, or to allow fate and passions drag us where they may.

I say action.

And In a positive way.

Positive to GG and BF.

Whatever is your preferred mode of communication, make it positive, direct and clear.

And do it now.

We are gamers, but we are also customers and advocates.

For the record, last night while we were at the store Nathan came up and told us that GG will be continuing to stock FOW, but that they will be downsizing because of this most recent event.  He did promise that new releases will still be stocked and that they will support team yankee, but they will keep far fewer things on the shelves.  He also promised that we will be able to order things from Battlefront through them still.

AP,

I was not in this game 6 years ago, but right now, support for the Finns at Battlefront seems to be substantial.

EW: Handbook=Rising Sun

MW: Handbook=Eastern Front

LW: Handbook=Grey Wolf
