The rest of 2016 - input on Fall FoW tournament

Location: Could we do something with the legion or FOW in like Centralia? The names says everything toward combining our groups. I will be willing to go to Vancouver/Portland if the group desires.

Avoid Labor Day, heavy family travel time usually leads to poor turnouts

Period: Go late or early. We just finished MW and the other two sound very fun. EW is harder to pull off because people tend not to have solid lists unless we did some escalation work.

Theme: They are fun, but are way more effective to local groups. Multiple populations being threaded tends to murky up themes because people are not necessarily connected to your desires.

I would also stray from the FOW point levels. 1700 for a tournament is highly annoying because of the sheer volume in models people field. It really slows the play down quite a bit. I would vote for 1300-1500 for a spectrum. Go speed chess style in 90 minutes with 5 minutes to set up and start dice rolling.

However, I will support th group on the decision. If we end up playing 2700 points on three hours...I probably would do that too because I can game.

Honestly I don't think 90 minutes is enough time even at 1300 points.  To get down to hour and a half matches you would have to be at the 1000 point level or lower on 4x4 tables, and even then that's pushing it.

Does anyone have contacts in Centralia, WA or in VFW or American Legion or Elks Lodge?

I am starting research on a venue for the Fall FoW tournament.

Considering expanding the event to include other games (e.g., Bolt Action, Chain-of-Command) or any other suggestions to get more participation.

Games that are not FoW don't have to be in a tournament format.

If we can get gamers from OR and WA to get together, that is a successful game event.

Here is my starting list for possible locations (free or low-cost):

Diversified Games- - too small

551 N Market Blvd

Chehalis, WA

(360) 740-7750

https://www.facebook.com/Diversified-Games-108156519223873/

NOTE: might be a small store, but they might partner with us on some level.

Masonic Lodge

218 N Pearl St, Centralia, WA 98531

(360) 736-6750

American Legion - - too spendy

111 W Main StCentralia, WA 98531

(360) 736-3755

American Legion Grant Hodge Post No 17

VFW Post 2200

360-736-6852

608 W 2nd St, Centralia, WA, 98531

Elks Lodge

505 W Main St, Centralia, WA 98531

NOTE: If you have contact information that is not appropriate for a public discussion (personal e-mail addresses, tel numbers, etc.), then PM me.

I like the idea of multiple games going on, expands the interest pool. The only downside is that space, and resources can become an issue.

I think supporting the game store would be a good start and then go to non-game venues for alternatives. Please let me know if you need help on research.

I used to play all my Version 2 tournaments at 1500/90min and it was super fun. But I bet you could get it down to 120 minutes at 1500 points and get a 4 th match in.

I think 1000 pts, 90 min on 4x4 table could be done, but I would like to test with 4 people before doing tournament. There might need to be considerations, but cannot anticipate those before testing.

4 matches, 1500 pts, 120 min ea, std table, 15 min in between and 15 min at end is 9.5 hours, without food break. Add food break 60 min, now 10.5 hrs.

Starting at 9:30 AM you would be done at 8 PM.

Not judging, but running the numbers clarifies the scheduling and length.

4 matches is diff, and mixing things up prevents stale-ness.

Thx 4 the input to date.

DATE: TBD. Depends on the venue. Tentatively a Saturday in SEP, after labor Day. Best guess is SEP 10.

LOCATION: TBD. Leaning towards Centralia, WA. Making calls this week to get places that are suitable and affordable. Plan B is GG in PDX.

OPTIONS: period* and points.

VOTE for ONE, on this thread, NLT Midnight, 30 JUN, so that I can publicize and promote.

  • OPTION 1: MW, 1200 points (hard choices): 0 votes, as of 6/6
  • OPTION 2: LW, 1500 points (larger than OFCC, but not huge): 1 vote, as of 6/7
    • Noland
  • If u want, include a proposed name for the Fall FoW tournament. No trademark infringements, please.
  1. ___ : 0 votes

When details are final, I will create a new thread for the FALL/SEP FoW Tournament.

REGARDING THE SUGGESTIONS FOR MORE ROUNDS: I think this would be a good thing to do. Based upon a small informal survey, that might be a smaller event, player-wise, so I recommend we move that discussion to this new thread: http://www.ordofanaticus.com/index.php?/topic/28261-fow-blitz-round-tournament/

FORMAT for this tournament: 3 rounds. 2.5 hours/round

SCHEDULE (tentative) same as ENFILADE (so long as that works in the venue):

Player Check in at 9:00 AM

Player Meeting at 9:15 AM
Round 1 (2h30m) start 9:30-12:00 PM
Round 2 (2h30m) start 1:00- 3:30 PM
Round 3 (2h30m) start 4:00-6:30 PM

Awards Ceremony ~6:45 PM

NOTE: If venue ends up being GG, then Player Check is 10 AM, and move each time window 1 hour later.

TABLE SIZE: std, 4'x6'

SPONSORSHIP/PRIZE SUPPORT (in addition to tournament fees): Not much luck in this area. Assistance welcome.

REFERENCES and LISTS:

  • ALL handbooks for the period
  • ALL Approved Battlefront PDFs
  • ALL Forces of War Digital lists for the period
  • Old lists from EasyArmy should be manually rechecked before submission.

* Note on Early War:  We will have an EW tournament in 2017, probably in March.

BTW, for players wanting big points lists, stay tuned for thread on FoW Tanksgiving 2016 in OR/WA. (Yes, we are having a Tanksgiving event this year. Blame me and my inexperience for not setting up Tanksgiving in 2015)

Leaning toward GG in PDX on 17 SEP.

If other hall rental in Centralia r like A.L., then we cannot afford to rent, unless we build up a larger event.

Building a larger event take more time than 4-6 wks.

Will keep trying other halls, in case we get better deal.
