No Man's Sky

This has gotten mixed reviews among my circle but I'm pretty much in love with it... enough to spring for a new PC.

It won't be a hit with completionists or folks who like to maximize efficiency or sticklers for a coherent storyline but if you dig open world concepts, minimalist narrative, weird creatures and cryptic messages it might be your bag.

I've always loved games where I could explore leisurely without too much fret over plot or imminent danger and this might be the ultimate example of a game like that. There is a certain repetition, especially with the space docks and habitats but if you relax your critical gamer and just take it in I find it's no impediment to enjoyment.

The crafting and inventory system is sufficient but not really groundbreaking. Amassing credits isn't really a challenge if that's your goal... it's a good idea since credits don't fill inventory slots actually. Lots of folks complained about this facet but I thought it was fine. I thought the challenge of managing limited inventory space actually added some interest and challenge.

It's not about combat, hardly. You can be aggressive or docile and it honestly doesn't make that much difference. I highly doubt there will be anything resemble a boss challenge... at least for now.

So, can you guys compare this to Elite Dangerous?  I've been considering Elite but there's enough negativity around it for me to have delayed.  Everyone is talking about this as a serious contender to Elite and Star Citizen.  Thoughts?

Elite dangerous has far better flyng mechanics than no man's sky. I am in the negative camp for NMS just to be upfront.

Haven't played ED myself. If you're mostly interested in space combat I'm gonna go out on a limb and say NMS isn't for you. It plays largely as a single player experience (so far the only thing other players do is determine who gets credit for discovering things) so when combat happens it's always against AI. Early on in space battles you generally just get shot down pretty easy. Once you can upgrade your shields/guns you stand a chance but you're still just flying in circles until you get an enemy in your sights then fire away until you pass each other and have to swing around again.

I totally get why a lot people wouldn't like it. It doesn't really fill any the requirements for any established genre. It's not a shooter, not an rpg, not even really a sandbox. You pretty much have to fall in love with the planet and star system generator mechanic. I like the minimalism because I can easily fill the story gaps with my own mental chatter. I can pretend that the caverns are filled with mystery even  though I know the complete set of potential discoveries already.

Star Citizen, if it ever gets released will probably eclipse it in the history of things but for now I'm having fun.

I really wanted to like the game as it checks a lot of boxes for me. I feel that everything is just not completed yet. It feels like an early access game (especially with how badly it ran on PC at launch).

No Man's Sky is an exploration game, but it constantly throws up barriers that take away the fun of exploring for me. I am totally cool with resource gathering, crafting, inventory management, and the like, but the way it is handled in this game just continually frustrated me. I find the procedurally  generated worlds to be bland and lifeless. Then, there are the space police robot things, for which I have yet to find any real purpose why they are in the game. They get angry at me for doing what the game requires me to do, and then I kill them without any effort.

Yes, I think part of the problem with this game was simply that it was way over-hyped. I feel this video explains that very easily:

Very much agree. Main value of the space police robots things seems to be that they drop titanium, which is otherwise difficult to find and is used to repair your suit.

The ps4 version is pretty constantly updating. On version 1.07, last I checked. Version 1.05 when I installed it.

For contrast, fallout 4 is on version 1.09.

Anyway, as far as my enjoyment goes, this game is overpriced on the PS4. This is not a $60 game. Maybe $30 if they update it regularly. For downloading, it downloads in under 4 gigs. A fast download, but gives a pretty good idea on how little content is actually in the game. If PS4 did returns, I would have already returned this one.

For now, I'll leave it installed, and check it every once in a while. The game is irritating to play, but I think it could be very fun if the developers update it more. PS4 controls, in particular, are awful, which is a very main source of my irritation - something that could easily be addressed by the developers when they have time.
