Here is tonights list.  I thought I would mess around with the Wu Ming Link again.  I did OK with it last time but still was not very efficient with the movement and orders.  I was not happy with the 2nd group being all Celestial Guard.  They milled about and had little punch.  More than likely it was due to my incompetence and not theirs.

The link was very effective tonight. Couple that with my dice being hot and you had the makings for trouble. The Wu Ming moved up the center and was able to lock down the objective and hold it for the game. My backup link moved up in the last turn and added some more weight if fire into the center area. The Crane Imperial Agent with Spitfire is very potent especially when you roll 3 Crits on 13 plus an additional hit. Goodbye SuJian! That's payback for the last time we met. 

I did better this time but too slow. Need to get faster. That comes with more games. I also think I need to go back to vanilla YuJing. There are lots of models that I really like but cannot use in ISS.

Cool list! I've played with the Wu Ming link a bit and one of my regular opponents runs it all the time so I've had a lot of time to consider what I think about it. I've found that, while the pain train is pretty great feeling while using it offensively, it doesn't do enough to actually win the game. It's so many points that it needs to be unicorn levels of effective per order where it's extending its threat, exercising its firepower, and locking down objectives all at the same time. On the plus side, it definitely made me appreciate the Crane+CG link as it can perform a similar job as the Wu Ming link on the field while also being much more cost effective. Probably my favorite way to run CG now, actually.

Ok, I think one of my main problems with getting used to lists and the figs is not playing the list more than one time.  So I think for this week I am going to try my list again and see how it goes.  Here is the list:

Last week I built the Yan Hao with the HRMC.  Cool model but I was only able to kill one model before he was taken out.  I really need to build a list around him if I want to field him effectively.  Still it was really cool seeing him standing on top of a building shooting away.  The image in my head is really awesome!  Plus he has the added benefit of scaring the hell out of the other player.  This week I am taking something different.  Yah I know I said that I need to try the same list more than once but I am still trying to figure out the game and what the troops can do.  I also really need to decide on my OFCC list so I can start building, and painting it.

In this list I can swap out the Zhanying with HMG for the Missile Launcher.  The Hsien allows me to go over the 4 SWC limit.

I'm confused by your comment about what "I'd rather see" as I'd rather see the second list given that it's a bit easier to manipulate. Both lists are lacking in specialists which may or may not be important in the narrative, but it's still nice to be relatively unafraid of the heavy lifters in ISS such as the Sophotect, Kanren, and Ninja. Overall, I'd say the first list is stronger because:

  • It has 10 orders (this is huge in Limited Insertion)
  • It has a much more powerful bully in the Su-Jian
  • It handles a better range of problems through shifting the visors off of your one HI and onto other troops

Both lists have pretty deadly links with their Haris+Core combos and, if the Haris is really your focus, the second list brings a deadlier one.

Ah, I see. I still think the Su-Jian list would be better there as the battle cat is so cool. 

Personally, I think the issue is with the value of the troops you're bringing. For example, Bao are pretty cool and I think their Haris is useful, but at 200 pts a Rui Shi and hacker somewhere in the list is just a more points effective method to get MSV2. You're losing out on the redundancy and Haris burst, but you're gaining in a useful specialist and a frankly amazing combat REM.

This is closer to what I would look at it. It has two decent hackers, the Sophotect with a Yudbot friend, a murder ball in the Su-Jian, and smoke shenanigans in a core link with one of the best MSV2 models in the game (in terms of value that is). It's lacking in the CoC, the Kanren could be swapped out for that if you want it, and the Haris, but I don't think I'd aim towards the Haris options in ISS at 200 pts given how expensive they are.

That's funny, my third list that I was working on had a Rui Shi in it but I couldn't work out the rest of the list. I've never had any luck using the REMs though. So I guess I'm apprehensive in that regard. I like the list you posted but to me it doesn't feel ISS enough. It's missing some of the key iconic models that make it ISS to me.

Yeah, my list considers more what is a good idea for an all-comers list along with what is feasible in 200 pts. I also love to have things like Bao, Pheasants, and especially Cranes in my ISS lists, but I don't consider them good fits for smaller point games due to the natural restrictions therein (i.e. they all have unnecessary equipment that drives their price up). 

I'm curious as to what issues you've had with REMs as they're quite literally the first purchase I tell people to make after their starter regardless of faction (barring Ariadna and Tohaa of course). Maybe we can work through them a bit especially if you're having issues with a stud like the Rui Shi.

Every time I have used either the Rui Shi or Lui Duan they get shot up before I can do anything.  Now that's only 3 times if I recall correctly. So not much experience with them.  I would assume I'm doing something wrong with them. Another thing I can't figure out is why they don't have any armour? You would think a robit would have at least a little bit of armour.

I was thinking that adding the Pangguling would be beneficial. He is baggage so he can reload the Mad Traps and Panzerfaust, he can mine sweep for the Zhanying sensor ability and is a repeater for the Kanren Hacker.  Also being that he has the baggage ability he could carry an unconscious or IMM trouper over to the Gui Feng to fix.  More than likely he will get shot up and die ingloriously!

The no armor on the assault REMs does hurt, but they're also BTS 6 for stranger engagements. The way I like to look at it is the Rui Shi and Lu Duan are both built and priced to die with me being OK with it. Use them aggressively and don't worry about whether they stay up forever. As long as they piece trade, you're likely still pulling ahead given the overall cost. You can also use the Rui Shi as more of a backfield piece by putting it into Suppresive Fire with Assisted Fire to deter flankers. Granted, in LI, this likely is not worth the orders, but in normal games it can be a lifesaver. 

As for your new list, the only major quibbles I have are the lack of supportware to, well, support your Rui Shi and the lack of a Sophotect. The former is very important in getting the most out of assault REMs as BS 12 ignoring cover on the to-hit roll is a big worry. Without it, the threat a Rui Shi presents is greatly lessened. 

For the Sophotect, they're just about the best specialist in the game along with being fantastic for LI in particular given their NWI and great movement potential.

Other than those "issues," I like the list. The Pangguling makes sense given your plan for it and the increased profile of your pieces makes the list look a lot more combat ready.

Well there's a pickle. I haven't used Hackers a lot and frankly i didn't look but assumed that the other Hacker options (killer and assault) had access to the supportware that the basic Hacker does.  That's what i get for not reading... back to the drawing board then.  As far as the Sophotech goes, I guess I like or can deal with the concept of the Aleph support but I just cannot stand the model.  If im going to use it then i really need to find a proxy.

For tonight, a modified list from those above.  I kept the Fireteam Harris and added in Rui Shi. We shall see how it goes.

Well I screwed up last night. I pushed up to fast and hard into the center half of the table. Overextended my Harris link into an area that had too many fire lanes for me to cover. Got the crap shot out of me. In the end only had the Celestial Guard with Kuang Shi controller left standing. Great game though! Thanks Jay for schooling a newb.
