Just a li'l update today of some paint I slapped around tonight. I'm going to a 200 pts LI tournament this Saturday and decided to run this list (scenarios are Fronline, Annihilation, and Quadrant Control so no specialists required):

I didn't have my Charontid, Speculo, or Vanguard Hacker ready to go so I thought I'd throw some free time at them this week to get them to a tabletop quality at least. While I pretty much have the Charontid (still needs some basing) and the Speculo ready to go, I did hit a slight hitch in that they're both pretty fugly to me so it was hard to care about the final outcome. I guess I won't feel too bad, but still I wish that CA would get a little love at least model wise.

Since an image is worth a thousand words, here ya go!

So I went to the tournament on Saturday and had a pretty solid time. I did end up playing with the Charontid list I posted even after second guessing myself and building a Cybermask abusing one (which could've performed a whole lot better). Since it ended up being two lists and all the missions were murder/area control, I also brought this Sphinx list:

I played against three great opponents (Will, Chris, and Ian) even if I didn't particularly put up three good fights.

Game one was against Will and his vanilla Nomads with a list looking something like this:

We played Frontline and I was going second playing my Charontid list. Will's turn one saw my Q-Drone go down, but not before dropping the ADHL Hellcat who botched his jump. Come my turn, I attempted to have the Charontid clear the other Hellcat out to make room for me to speed up the table and lay down some sweet Sepsitors all over those Intruders/Alguaciles, but alas I lost all of my BS 17 duels with the Hellcat and died (no crits necessary). Thankfully my Speculo was willing to pick up the slack and she murdered literally every remaining Nomad with the exception of the sniper Intruder who hid prone on a rooftop from her.

Game two I was playing against Chris and his Hassassins which looked to be a fun and challenging game. His list was something like this:

Chris and I were playing Quadrant Control this round and I again brought my Charontid list and looked to have a better outing with him this time around...unfortunately he disagreed as did my entire army. While Chris definitely didn't roll well (besides a lucky crit on my Speculo when she revealed to shoot at the Fiday), I proceeded to roll a low of an 18 (keep in mind the lack of plural there) for anything but armor and was left chasing a tournament point or two here. A disappointing game, but that's how dice go sometimes.

Game three was against Ian and it was time for some classic Annihilation. Since the Charontid had done nothing but die all day with literally zero accomplishments to his name, I decided to bring the Sphinx list out to play this time. Ian's list was something like this:

I went second here and hid my Sphinx on the right flank near where his Regular link was setup. Unfortunately for Ian, his entire turn was spent on the GDA who only managed to down the Slave Drone before the turn ended. My first order had an Ikadron flamethrower the two of them to try and drop the bot so my Sphinx could finish the GDA (he had his back to where the Sphinx was), but ended up just killing both and only going Unconscious1 in return. The rest of my turn saw the Sphinx kill every member of the link team along with the Bagh-mari before taking his third wound and falling down himself (I was attempting the flamethrower the last two members+the Bagh-mari and just failed the two armor rolls from combis). I stood both models up on my turn, killed the Sikh who had come in along with the Naga who (unsuccessfully) tried to hack the HVT, and we called it there.

Results: 3 TP

I managed to get fourth place even with my disastrous second game which I guess is OK, but more importantly I had a pretty great time. Overall I think the format is an interesting one, but that 200 pts is a lot less balanced overall due to how damage snowballs. Still nice to play against different army types than the standard Infinity affair—especially Hassassin who I've never seen at a tournament before. I guess next up I need to start working on my OFCC models as obviously neither of these lists is going to cut it there.

With OFCC over, I thought I'd do a short write-up about what happened and my initial thoughts on Bahram. I'd also like to apologize in advance for the lack of pictures. The only game I remembered to take any was the one that was over so quickly that it didn't matter .

First off, I wanna say that I really enjoyed running this list. The Ghulam link worked fantastically and the Doctor+Nasmat was 100% worth her weight in gold. The only change I'd be tempted by would be to swap the Lasiq and Al-Djabel out for 2xFiday (one with mines and one with a Boarding Shotgun). Even then, that's not a change I'd make in retrospect as both the tables and Viral ended up being huge.

GAMES

I want to preface this by saying that I didn't get much of a chance to hang out with anybody outside of the actual event and that I slept in one of the worst hotels I've ever been in and I still had a fantastic time. This was due in no small part to how wonderful my opponents were so I wanted to give a special thank you to Jay, Jenni, Bob, Aaron, and Evan. You were all fantastic and I'd play any of you again in a heartbeat.

Now, as for the games themselves:

Jay's list was a classic Pain Train and one that I knew all too well. Unfortunately, as we weren't using the ITS Specialists rules, they also had the added benefit of being able to accomplish the mission. This lead to a game where I tried to disable a few of the missiles/Oniwaban looking at my objectives so I could score, failing to do so in a timely fashion, and getting smooshed in the score even with only one JSA model being left standing. Overall I had a great time playing the match and would love a rematch sometime.

RESULTS: Loss with 1 OP.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: On the last order of the game I could've nabbed another Objective Point for my team, but decided to instead go for a coup de grace on a downed Haramaki with my Nazmat for the style points.

MISPLAYS: This was the first game of the weekend where I felt I used the mutt poorly. While I did end up landing an E/Marat hit on one of his ML Haramaki which removed him as a problem, I didn't try to do so until after my Ayyar had already eaten a crit missile to the face. Coupling this with failing to throw smoke to go for an entire team's worth of E/Marat lead me to rethink my usage of mutts in future games.

Round 2:
VS: Jenni's Bakunin
Mission: Modified Rescue

Jenni's list was an interesting one to be sure, but I don't have much experience with Nomads in N3 so who am I to judge (I also I can't remember the last 45 points of it)? This game boiled down to Al-Djabel having an easy time dragging vict-err, "civilians" back to my deployment along with his good friend the Ayyar. This was mostly due to the Taskmaster going down my turn one to a missile to the face along with the Nomad Spec-op and the robots.

RESULTS: Win with 5 OP.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Since Jenni's turn two (she was the bottom of the round) started when the 25 minute warning was called, we were concerned about getting three turns in. While I'm betting we could've managed it, by mutually deciding to end it at the bottom of two we had a much more entertaining game. This involved Jenni having a Morlock and KHD Zero work together to down and then Spotlight Leila in order to net Jenni some extra deployment zone in her next game.

MISPLAYS: This time around I think I played pretty well. One of the things I wish I'd done a little differently though is my use of Al-Djabel. I was so stuck on using him as an extractor, as normal Rescue lends itself super well to Fidays being used that way, that I wasted a bunch of orders doing weird [big bad swear word] in order to drop the threats such as the Sin Eater that Al-Djabel could've easily dealt with.

Round 3:
VS: Bob's Nomads
Mission: Modified Biotechvore

Bob's List:

Unfortunately, I didn't nab a copy of Bob's courtesy list so this is all I can remember about it. This game was marked by a series of early rolls that decided the game with my Lasiq and Ghulam link dropping everything Bob engaged them with and then my Ayyar+Al-Djabel getting rid of the other threats. In the end, the only thing left to do was mop up a messy game.

RESULTS: Win with 9 OP.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: I tried to drop Bob's last model (a lone Alguacil I believe) with my Ayyar with my last regular order only to fail. My Lt. Ghulam decided he could do better only to also get plugged in the face. Just goes to show you not to get too greedy or it'll come back to bite you.

MISPLAYS: I think I mostly played this game pretty clean although I do think there had to have been a better way to deal with Bob's Suppressive Fire models than just wandering in and tanking with the Ayyar. I couldn't think of it at the time, but I'm sure it existed.

Round 4:
VS: Aaron's PanO

Aaron's List:

This was about the most unfortunate game I played of the weekend. Aaron just couldn't catch a break as every model he moved was in LoF of either my Ghulam sniper, ML Ghulam, or Lasiq which left him with zero models at the end of his turn.

RESULTS: Win with 9 OP.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: That time I deployed all my snipers on three-story buildings...yeah, sure, that one.

MISPLAYS: Really, this wasn't a game where either of us played much at all. I pretty much just rolled crits and then walked around an empty board.

Round 5:
VS: Evan's Ariadna
Mission: Modified Armory

Evan's List:

This list might be a little off as I was constructing it from the memory of what happened rather than any hard data. This was another game decided by early crits and three-story buildings as my Lasiq managed to drop the Spetsnaz on I believe the first order of the game with a crit while the Ghulam sniper did the same to both the Tankhunter and the Spec-op (who was rocking +6 ARM, ODD, and a HMG). Still, Evan managed to give as good as he gave dropping my Spec-op (+5 ARM, Motorcycle, and HMG), ML Ghulam, Lasiq, and Ghulam sniper in the first two rounds to even things up. That round two was pretty amazing as I was down to three regular orders and spent them killing off all the mines and camo people hiding in and around the Armory with just a (wounded) Ayyar. All in all a great and close game that the points did not reflect.

RESULTS: Win with 9 OP.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: I had a point where I spent a Command Token to make my mutt's order Regular so I could re-holo with the Ayyar and both slice down with the real Ayyar to avoid a mine, cause said mine to go off with a holo, and kill the Chasseur outside of her Sixth Sense L1 zone to get the -6 from the Ayyar all at the same time. I was definitely proud of that.

MISPLAYS: The biggest misplay of the game was also the one that allowed Evan to gather any momentum at all. First, I activated Al-Djabel (still in Impersonation state) and entered the LoF of the Chasseur to let it dodge into the objective room. Then I decided that my ARM 6 Spec-op with a shotgun couldn't possibly lose in a firefight with said Chasseur's pistol before proceeding to die to just that. Couple that with not putting any other models in the objective room and I feel frankly super embarrassed with my play. If that's not bad enough, I could've just shot the zombies that were between the Chasseur and my Spec-op with my shotgun to force her to make dodge -3 rolls without endangering my Spec-op at all. Just sloppy play....

Anyway, I would say I ended up with a pretty successful run going 4-1 with 33/45 possible objective points. Next up I'll write up my thoughts on the list itself and my first few games playing Haqqislam. But for now, sleep!

Nailed it on the list, only difference was scots guard missile over the tank hunter.  Our game was weird, but epic.  10/10 would do it again.

I even remember you saying Scots Guard now. Silly me! I'd also love to do it again some time, preferably within an ITS to really see the carnage!

As I mentioned before, I have thought a fair amount about Hassassins and Haqq as a whole after my first outing with them. These are those thoughts and I know thoughts; these are the best thoughts:

First off, Haqq's strengths as a faction are pretty well known. They have excellent light infantry, their Lt. options make me sad to play Combined, and their access to doctors along with high WIP feels fantastic. These were all things I found to be true, but what really surprised me was the strength of their HI and just how many sneaky tricks they had up their sleeve with Bahram being particularly good at that last one (and the Ayyar something to call out in particular). While I still have a lot to learn about the faction, I think I can speak somewhat knowledgeably about the models I ended up dropping into my list.

Ghulam:

First off is the humble Ghulam, the mainstay of many Haqq lists. In Bahram in particular, I think they're pretty much a must-have due to the solid strengths they bring along with the low cost.

Strengths:

  • Low cost
  • Fair weapon options
  • Excellent Lt. options
  • Excellent specialist options

Weaknesses:

  • No MULTI access
  • No special Fireteam access (i.e. no added HI or other nonsense)
  • Normal grunt stats beyond WIP
  • Slightly expensive if you're not using aforementioned WIP

The weaknesses to Ghulam as they appear in Bahram aren't many, but they are felt on the table. The pricing and WIP "problems" in particular are easily mitigated through list selection (i.e. giving them a plan at the beginning) while the weapon access was just something to deal with. While I did miss having MULTI next to my Sniper, I didn't miss the extra SWC cost so I'd call it a wash.

As for the strengths, they're mainly expressed through keeping these bad boys and girls as a defensive backfield link. While adding Leila and keeping her in the backfield feels bad at first, this can quickly be alleviated through the use of the many Repeater/Pitcher options available to Bahram and her Shock Marksmanship Rifle and BS 12 are truly excellent additions to an otherwise BS-starved and long-range focused Fireteam.

Note: the Doctor+ option feels like an always include to me. WIP 17 with a Nasmat for coverage at 19 pts is just too good to pass up. Sure she can't be in the link, but even in Limited Insertion I didn't feel like my doctor was taking away a slot better suited for a different model. An excellent addition to any force (plus, I recommend any backfield piece that comes with a rifle and a shotgun).

Lasiq:

Man, I had a love/hate relationship with this model the whole weekend. While on paper it seemed like a good pick and I was never disappointed with my strategy, the performance kept biting me in the butt until the bitter end. I definitely need to work more on my execution in the future regarding the Lasiq.

Strengths:

  • Good weapon options
  • Fair cost
  • Fair stat line
  • Fair special rules

Weaknesses:

  • Limited weapon options
  • Viral sniper in particular feels "win more" rather than helpful
  • Weak defensively
  • Low versatility

It seems weird to write that the Lasiq both has good and limited weapon options, but that's the truth of it. Both the Viral Rifle and the Viral Sniper are excellent weapons, but they are lacking in versatility (although the rifle variant does also come with a Light Shotgun to help out). In the brave new world of the Ayyar the Lasiq might end up being a piece taken mostly for its pricing rather than a deep need to me.

Note: I'm fully aware that the Viral Rifle variant plays much more aggressively and is definitely something I'm looking forward to in the future. As it stood in a Limited Insertion format, I just wanted the sniper as something to spend SWC on rather than the Daylami I would probably normally buy with that 1.5.

To be continued....

I am going to have to agree that the humble Ghulam is an essential part of a Haqq army. The have such a low cost, that even at 200 point, you can avoid a fire team and a haris link. They make a great static defense team until the later rounds when specialists ( FO, Leila, the Doctor) can break out and achieve mission objectives.

Part 2:

Ayyar:

Strengths:

  • Good weaponry
  • Solid defensive stats
  • Surprise Shot L2
  • Soooo much Shock

Weaknesses:

  • Competes with Fidays
  • Low defense outside of a holo state
  • Poor weapon variety

The Ayyar is likely the most talked about HI release I've ever seen and that's saying something. It seems everyone wants to compare their troops to them and with good reason: holo2 and SS2 are incredibly effective. I do find the lack of viable profiles to be slightly off-putting, but considering how good a Shock Marksmanship Rifle is, I'll let it slide.

As for how the Ayyar performed in my one heuristic testing, this is definitely a piece worth fielding. I wouldn't call the Ayyar an autoinclude, but never did I feel I had wasted my points when I put it on the table. However I did have some problems with its survivability once I had popped out of holo and even sometimes when I was in it. I've taken to treating the Ayyar like an aggressive MI piece with a little extra wiggle room due to the extra wound and have found it to be a useful way of thinking about it.

Side note: A SMR Ayyar costs the exact same as 3xFO Ghulam which can be a helpful thing to remember when you're deploying one.

Al-Djabel:

Strengths:

  • Excellent melee
  • Fair ranged capabilities
  • Excellent field presence
  • Slightly busted in 20x20's idea of a mission

Weaknesses:

  • Expensive
  • Fragile
  • High risk/high reward

My thoughts on Al-Djabel are pretty standard with my thoughts on Fidays as a whole: they're excellent corral pieces. This is one of the few weirder tricks in Haqq that I have some experience with using considering my experience with Speculo Killers, limited though it may be, so I wasn't completely lost on how to use Hussein. Mainly I'd just infiltrate near stuff my opponent obviously didn't want me to kill and either Rambo turn one to remove as much of their force as possible or just leave him there as an omnipresent threat that is very expensive to root out.

While Al-Djabel offers enhanced CC abilities over a normal Fiday, he does compound an issue that all of them have in that they're rather squishy and one crit away from being a complete waste considering how deep in enemy territory they operate. Still, while I likely wouldn't bring Al-Djabel in a normal 200 pts game, I felt justified in my selection of him over a normal Fiday in LI. Nothing says "...and the horse you rode in on" more than slapping someone with a CC23 MA4 PH13 Viral pimp glove to the face. In fact, I prefer it to the Monofilament sword of the Speculo, but that's a question of what each model is trying to accomplish. Where the Speculo is there to remove any threat large enough to play ball with  an EI Aspect, Al-Djabel and crew are there to terrorize the backfield and remove the support from my opponent's army.

Note: Don't forget about his rifle. He's mainly a CC killer, but you can still get out of ZoC/LoF shots on people pretty easily with him especially as the game progresses.

Muttawi'ah:

Strengths:

  • Excellent weapon selection
  • No fat on the model
  • Low cost
  • Impetuousness works in their favor
  • Completely busted in 20x20's idea of a mission

Weaknesses:

  • No long-range weapons
  • Not particularly good in CC
  • ...don't come with free lollipops? (it's honestly hard coming up weaknesses for these guys)

The Muttawi'ah are really the only models in the game that make me look at the Proxies and think maybe they're not the most broken things in the game. Honestly, there's very little reason not to take a few of these at every chance you get and I can't imagine a sane person advocating against them.

At OFCC, due to LI restrictions, I was stuck only bringing one, but had this been a normal event I probably would've slapped down at least three. The combination of Jammer (which isn't even Comms Equipment so can't be shut down), Smoke, E/Marat, and Chain Rifle along with an excellent WIP of 15 just makes these guys a complete terror on the playing field. I consistently felt like I was messing up or at least underutilizing the mutts in all of my games and they were still punching far above their weight in those games. There's just no way around it: mutts are too good not to field.
