Taking the 9th Age Plunge

Recommended Posts

Finally going to give 9th a shot.  It look like tons of fun at OFCC last year.  I am a long time WHFB player so I am hoping that the transition will be easy.  I have O&G and Lizzies.  What do I need to know about list building?  Any places I can read some list building suggestions?  I was alwasy way more comfortable with my Orcs than Lizzies.

Hmm...looks like people are generally unhappy with Saurian  Ancients so I might just stick with Greenies.

To be fair, the 9A forums are pretty much bitch fests. There's a strange bit of meta where the US doesn't do team tournaments in the same vein as ETC so people see the lack of representation as a fatal flaw while in reality it's that the player chosen to be the aggressor or defender or whatever doesn't have/doesn't like X army for that role.

I don't really know much about the power level of saurians in particular, but few armies I've thrown together felt intrinsically weak.

I would agree that the 9th Age forums are definitely a good deal more negative than they need to be. One of the miracles of 9th Age is that all of the armies are actually fairly balanced against each other so you should really be good taking whichever you prefer to play. As for list-building advice, I'm pretty familiar with all of the books and always happy to do some list critique for you. Feel free to post either in here or PM me if you want any pointers :)

As someone who took saurian ancients in a 1.0 tournament I can tell you I liked them then and I like them more now in 1.3. Why people complain is because playing an army can change quite drastically depending on the edition. The rules committe people actually care about balance. Crazy enough owning the entire army is best.

How useful are Hordes?  In 8th, they were a mixed bag.  What makes them good/bad?

First, glad to see more players giving 9th Age a shot! Love the system, hoping to see a few more faces at OFCC this year :)

Regarding hordes, I've been seeing online a lot of people going more of a MSU / MMU route. Playing locally though, I seem to run into big blocks quite often. Personally, I like a big block of troops in the various armies I play, but with the way objectives work in 9th I don't think a horde of troops is as vital as it was in 8th.

Being an O&G player I can say hordes are our best bet.

Saurian main issue at the moment is that their old style of being a magic heavy and magic being really weak atm and miscasts being pretty much murder to skink units its left both Saurian casters in a bad spot.

Full 30 for eadbashers. 40 or 50 for regular orcs. Irons run better 6x5. Goblins depend what your doing with them. Usually they run as tarpits so narrow and deep is the better plan. However if your doing bow goblins (popular build atm) they usually go 10 wide to maximize shots.

Generally avoid forest goblins due to their overcost since poison is not optional and it makes them WAY to expensive.
