2019 Winter Warzone 40K Escalation League

Welcome everyone! You’ve waited patiently, and here’s the first go at laying down the rules.

What: 40k escalation league

When: 8 weeks of slaughter! Starting Tuesday January 8th 2019 and ending Tuesday February26th 2019.

Where: WoW game nights AND off site games are allowed

Perks: There will be a 1500 point ITC style tournament Saturday March 9th 2019 after the league. Anyone who purchased 2019 champ dues and played at least 5 weeks/games in the 40k league for credit will get FREE entry to that tournament. More info to come.

Who: YOU!!!

Why: Because you need to prepare an army, refresh on 40k rules, or just love 40k so much you want to play more often!

Cost: FREE for Everyone (except game night dues playing at WoW)

  • Highly recommend renewing your champion status on the Ordo store for 2019. Warlord more than pays for itself for just the league alone.

Needed: Bring a copy of your list, gaming equipment (dice, cards, etc), and a good sportsmanlike gaming demeanor.

Army Composition:

  • Battleforged lists using matched play, with the goal of escalating a real army for future use (OFCC, tournaments, and other future events).
  • Max detachments:
    • 500 points: 1 detachment
    • 750 to 1250: 2 detachments
    • 1500+: 3 detachments
  • Armies can include any number of 40k approved Games Workshop, Chapter Approved, or Forgeworld sources
  • Each week will be an increased point value.
    • Week 1 (Jan 8th): 500
    • Week 2 (Jan 15th): 750
    • Week 3 (Jan 22nd): 1000
    • Week 4 (Jan 29th): 1000
    • Week 5 (Feb 5th): 1250
    • Week 6 (Feb 12th): 1250
    • Week 7 (Feb 19th): 1500
    • Week 8 (Feb 26th): 1500 (same point level as tournament in March)
  • You need to have fun with this. Experiment with combinations you’ve never tried, you are not locked into a list or army during this league!
  • CLARIFICATIONS:
    • If you use a detachment, you get all the benefits of a detachment including CP's.
    • Some weeks have limits on how many of detachments you can take.

Event Specific Rules:

  • Your army is your army.
  • You have your own Warlord. Nominate a CHARACTER. Required keyword.
  • If playing doubles:
    • Your psychic powers can only buff your army. They are allowed to debuff your teammate’s army.
    • For the purposes of the Fight Phase, teammates are considered as one and will need to pick a single unit to Fight first.
  • 6x4 tables with FAQ Tactical Reserves rules in effect.
    • Smaller tables will be used for the lower point levels.
  • League points will be earned in 3 ways:
    • Win/Loss/Draw
    • Newly painted models/units
    • Sportsmanship

Painting and Basing Requirements:

  • All models must be WYSIWYG assembled (no proxies). Painted is optional.
  • If counting models toward painting points:
    • Must be minimum 3 colors
    • Effort must be made to transform or replace the bare plastic base
    • Points will be awarded to single models newly (1 point each, max 3) painted OR bonus points if an entire squad is newly painted/finished (5 points). This can be earned weekly.

Missions:

  • All missions will be released the Sunday before the week begins on Tuesdays. (i.e. Mission for the first week will be posted Jan 6th, etc).

Earning League Points (earned once each week):

  • Win: 5 points
  • Loss: 1 point
  • Draw: 3 points
  • Newly painted models OR unit
    • Newly painted counts if completed after Dec 1st 2018, in preparation for the league.
    • If painted 2 units in a week, count the other unit next week.
    • 1 point per newly painted model, max 3
    • OR
    • 5 points for newly painted squad, vehicle, or monstrous creature
  • Up to 3 Points for sportsmanship (clarified on each week's mission)

Awards:

  • Best Overall
    • Awarded by Most total points
    • Prize: A custom banner for your Ordo posts showing your awesomeness!
  • Best escalation
    • Awarded by most painting points
    • Prize: Bragging rights
  • Best Sportsmanship

I will be tweaking this as needed so please stay tuned to this page. Ask any questions. Tell me what you think.

For the Good of the Order!

  • Thanks 2

Got kitbashed models... What's the rules. As a ork player and someone kitbashing many many Mek Gunz, I am using a majority of GW bits and things but I also 3d print certain parts...

Kitbashed and counts as are acceptable. Mainly to address proxies not looking for empty bases, some space marine pretending to be a Necron, etc. Also trying to be WYSIWYG is standard.

Question on this point. Where is the line between “proxy” and “conversion”?

Obviously, sticking a My Lil Pony toy on the table and calling it a Hive Tyrant is a bridge too far... But what about, say, giving a Primaris Sergeant model a thunder hammer (because you think it looks cool) and saying that it’s a Primaris Lieutenant with a power sword?

Remember the old cardboard standee Ork Dreadnought that came in the Second Edition starter set?

A friend of mine took some gobblin standard bearer bitz, some gretchin, some spare sprue, and mounted them up on a fully-decorated, appropriately-sized base. Ran it alongside all his other Deff Dreads. It was hilarious (and the damn thing rolled more 6’s than statistically probable).

Honestly pretty lenient. I'd say if it's GW bits/model mostly you're safe,. Like a space marine captain could be a names character, etc. Conversions are totally encouraged!

Like you said, just not my little pony, although we know they would rule the universe in the far future.... 😋

You just want a Primaris Smash Captain 😜

I’m more concerned about my Lieutenant!

Veteran Sergeant Arnulf “Hammerzeit” Köing did such a great job leading my Kill Team that I painted some extra stripes on his helmet and promoted him to Lieutenant.

Ohhh goodness. You are making your own problems now 😜

He is a LT now, he needs to learn finesse and grace. Not the rushing bumble swings of an Ork with a power klaw 😜

Yeah, it’d have been nice if GW let Primaris Lieutenants use power fists too. They’ve given both Intercessor Sergeants and Primaris Captains access to ‘fists... It’d be a lot easier to “counts as” a thunder hammer as a power fist.

Although the “Primaris Captain with Power Fist” is a different Datasheet than the other “Primaris Captain” and the Fist Captain must also have a plasma pistol. Because GW no longer lets you use wargear that doesn’t come in the box.

I really like the Primaris models, but the inability to customize them is really annoying.

Yea, too many 3rd party designers out there sadly.

Oh well, guess I will enjoy my orks and all the various things I can do 😜

Okay, proxy, conversion, and counts as. Okay, so prop your my little pony on a base and use it as a placeholder for that model that didn't arrive in the mail yet, that's a proxy. You take said my little pony and hack it up, add putty and bits until it really does look kinda like a Hive tyrant and each of the weapons are represented clearly, that's a conversion. You have a Khorne Lord on a Juggernaut, but you decide you want to use the rules for space wolves on thunderwolf cavalry because the rules are better/more fitting, that's counts as.

Ultimately, conversions and counts as are fine, as long the opponent can easily determine which equipement/weapons are being represented by the model (or would be able to easily determine if they were familiar with how your faction's models would normally look).

Regarding WYSIWYG and counts as, it should be things that are similiar enough. A chaos lord of khorne on juggernaut is ultimately a space marine on a mount, provided the weapons match with the rules being used and the bases are the same size, it fits WYSIWYG.

Typically the big no-no is using a faction-specific model to count as a different unit in the same faction. Like don't use a Leman russ to represent a chimera, it just confuses things. Don't use plasma guns to count as melta guns. But using TAU fusion blasters to count as melta guns in a Deathwatch force would work just fine (and maybe even be fluffy).

In the past, I was using very old metal space marines that came with Shuriken Catapults (yes, old metal model) to represent SM with grav guns. Since the Shuriken Catapult is no longer part of the SM arsenal, it was a great counts as model.

2 questions in here.

1) Are we applying the limit on unit entries the same way we are applying detachments? Like normally, games upto 1k are 2 detachments and also no more than 2 units from same unit entry (aside from troops and dedicated transports). Are we modify the number of detachments to match number of duplicate units. So 500pts, rule of 1, 750-1250, rule of 2, 1500-1750, rule of 3?

2) Are the CA custom vehicles allowed? They're normally open play only, but it doesn't really say above if we are limited to matched play units from those sources. Doesn't really matter for my TAU, but I'd love to see some looted vehicles and custom land raiders on the table...

1) I hadn't forced that issue yet. But following normal matched play, yes. Ideally don't be spamming units.

2) I had hoped yes, they'd be ok. Looted vehicles and such are something I'd like to allow folks to use in the league. As for a tournament later, not sure. I'm open to a case for denying them, but as it stands now CA seems legit?

For looted vehicles do they have point values?

Killing my use of grots here 😜

Sadly I doubt we can use those. They only have PL for open play and this will all be matched play

Chapter Approved updates Matched Play point values for everything in the game. But it also has other content, amongst them are a set of rules for “customized” Land Raiders, Looted Ork Vehicles, and a sort of “roll your own” Special Character. None of those options have Matched Play point values.

Which is sad because I want to do custom characters!

@Dark Trainer @Weav can we do a side by side PL escalation league so people can use the special land raiders and looted tanks as well as custom characters?

Honestly, I don't think i'd be against 2 people who wanted to use PL on a given week, etc. As long as both players were motivated for it, wouldn't hurt anything. I would ask players to arrange that ahead of time with each other.
