Post Apocalypse Koyote

After a skirmish against a band of Preserves, my mutants stumbled upon a looted gun shop.  Brother Ne spotted a box of ammo on the floor, beneath a partially collapsed support beam.  He managed to shift the beam without bringing down the ceiling and was rewarded with Pre-Fall Ammo relic. Meanwhile, my Feral Mutant, Brother Ick, had spotted something shiny in Pre-Fall porta potty. When he reached down to fish it out, he slipped, and ended up submerged tank of hundred year old excrement.  He now suffers a -1 penalty to all stat test during the next Game.  Brother Ick, indeed.

After cashing in the bounty on the Rad-Zombies my warband destroyed, I cobbled together enough barter script to hire an Alpha Mutant to serve as second in command.  This newest disciple, known simply as The Deacon, is equipped with an assault rifle and the pre-fall ammo that Brother Ne retrieved from the old gun shop.  Assembling a model for this new recruit was quite simple.  Put Necromunda Redemption mode on base, add a plastic belt pouch to rear of model, and voila!

I will need to hire another Rank & File model in order to hire a third Specialist.  I don't yet have the barter script to do this, but in anticipation of this, I assembled another cultist.  I ran out of suitable plastic cultist bodies, so I used a body from the Frostgrave soldier sprue.  The arms come from the  North Star cultist sci-fi weapons kit (I removed the original gun), and the assault rifle was made by Anvil Industries.

Thanks.

Because of all the windows there's not enough places where a model can be placed completely out of sight.  To remedy this I am going to paint some boards to put over some of the windows.  This will break up some of the grey stone on the buildings and make it easier for models to move about the board.

I just ordered some 3 scrap walls and 6 sheet metal barricades from Crooked Dice Miniatures.  This should give us even more places to hide our minis.

Mine won't be painted this well, but I think I will use them to add a bit more color to my board.

I spent some time this weekend working on my terrain.  First, I finished my Dormant Ordnance markers and my Zombie Nest.  I haven't decided if I'm going to add clumps of grass to the nests.

Below is my progress on operation Block Line of Sight.  I printed the signs on normal printer paper, glued them in place, and hit them with some Agrax to 'dirty them up' -easy peasy.

More progress on Operation Block Line of Sight.

Each Crooked Dice barricade set includes two long barricades and one short barricade.  I bought two sets, so I had six barricades to work with.  The horizontal leg of the supports are short, so the barricades are a bit wobbly.  I fixed this by mounting the barricades  on styrene bases.

By matching each short barricade with a long barricade, I was able to create two longer barricades.  The two remaining long barricades were mounted on separate bases, giving me four barricades in total.

Once again, I used the hazard signs to break up the large flat spaces and add a bit more color to the terrain.

This afternoon I knocked out 6 of Walking Dead Scenery Booster supply counters.  These I will use to mark the objective scenery pieces in the Snipe Hunt scenario.

I also found time to assemble IG176/2 or IG-88 for short.

After their last scenario, my cultist mutants drew the Wrecked Robot card from the Wasteland Deck, and were rewarded with a free Depend-o-Bot.  The model is sold by the creators of TNT.  The end of its barrel was a bit malformed, so I replaced with a short length of aluminum tubing.

]I outsourced the painting of my outpost to Joey, who is pretty handy with an air brush and weathering pigments.  I am very pleased with the result.

The next step is to put it on a textured styrene base and add some jersey barriers that will form sections of outer walls.  Once finished, it will make great fortification for the Little Slice of Heaven scenario.

I've been thinking of ways to break up my VERY grey board.  A friend suggested adding some foliage.  In TNT it's been at least a century since the Great Fall, so it's easy to imagine nature breaking through the concrete to retake the ruins of Seattle.

Below is a before and after shot.  I assembled the trees for a different board, so the aren't based for this board.  If I elect to add trees, they will be a bit taller and a little more numerous.  And my future post-apoc forest would probably be a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees.

So what do you think, trees or no trees?

These photos have convinced me to put my jersey barriers on styrene bases. As present, they blend in a bit too well.

I suppose I could break up the grey buildings by adding to the walls areas of green moss or perhaps some ivy.

Here's the set up for our final game of our mini-5 week TNT campaign.

Sorry about the quality of the photos.  The light in the shop is bad and I took the photos with my phone.

After setting up my terrain, we decide to play a 4-way, 'King of the Hill' type of scenario.  Since the warbands were deployed within 8" squares at the table's corners, we added the cargo containers to block LOS between the deployment zones.

We had to stop the game during Turn 4 because the shop closed.  There was much carnage.  The Washington State Troops, a Peacekeeper warband, was declared the winner.

I'm eager to finally start painting my warbands, so I decided against spending the many hours required to assemble and paint a dozen Citadel Woods trees. Instead, I opted to save time by using model railroad trees.  I mounted the trees on 40mm 'Building Ruins' bases made by Crafty Ogre, a local manufacturer.  Before painting, I drilled a hole in the center of each base and added additional texture using white glue and sand.

I know that I stated that I am eager to finally get to painting my warbands, but my orders from Fogou Models and Sarissa Precision arrived yesterday, and I just couldn't help myself.  By combining a Sarissa mdf billboard kit with some of the Fogou barriers, I hope to create an interesting terrain piece that injects a bit of old Seattle flavor into my board.

I didn't say it's a very good flavor, but it's good enough when you are 5 or 6 beers in, and not tasting much of anything anymore.  Plus, it's something's that had its heyday during my youth, so for good or ill, thinking about it always brings back a sense of nostalgia.

I glued the artwork to a very thin sheet of styrene that is sized to fit in the sign's frame.  The sheet is held in place by 4 tiny pieces of poster tack and can be easily removed.  I designed it this way because I didn't know if I would like the look of artwork after it was "aged" with a thinned down brown ink.  This turned out to be a wise move on my part.  My first attempt to "age" the art didn't go so well.  What you see is my second go at aging the sign.

Sister Ovis (Mutant Emissary)

HVz2iF.jpg

Pulp cultists are typically portrayed as wearing robes colored a single tone, typically black, purple, or red.  I've taken a different direction.  I reasoned that both tailors and bolts of dyed cloth are hard to come by in post-apocalypse America, so I gave my cultists a dirty, rag tag appearance -hence all the browns and greys that I used to paint my first two cultists.  Sister Ovis' status as deaconess gives her access to better garments, but she should still look a bit grubby, so I painted her robes to look like dirty, undyed cotton, fancied up some with a plain red stole and trim.  My aim is for the model to both stand out and fit in with the rest of my grubby cultists.

Thanks Sherbert.  My painting style is still fairly cartoony, but my color selection and use of washes has let me to add a dash of grit to my post-apoc models.

These poor wretches are the feral mutants, Brother Ick and Brother Ack.  The razor sharp quills that sprout from their torsos had shredded a half dozen vestments before Cardinal Corvus finally agreed to grant them a special dispensation and permit them to wear only loincloths.

The Iron Deacon (Mutant Emissary)

uJM5T2.jpg

The model is a Redeptionist Brethren armed with an autogun and an exterminator.  In Necromunda, the latter is weapon attachment that gives the wielder a one shot flamer attack.  In keeping with this model's origins, as soon as I have the barter script, I am going to equip the Iron Deacon with molotov cocktails with the 'large caliber upgrade' (i.e. strength 6 molotov cocktail).  Since, in TNT, a model can be armed with a two-handed weapon and grenades, the model's armament easily translates into a model armed with an assault rifle and molotov cocktails.

One more model to go (Cardinal Corvus himself), and I will have a fully painted 400 BS warband.

Well, I've just about finished painting Cardinal Corvus.  The model (Imbrian Arts' King of Ghouls), is turning out, more or less, as expected, however, when placed beside his flock, he doesn't 'fit in' as well as I had hoped. Bummer.  Back to the drawing board.

My first candidate for my new Cardinal Corvus, is the Redemptionist Deacon that I converted into a Mondo.  Like Cardinal Corvus, the model is huge and is equipped with a double handed weapon and I have little doubt that this fine fellow fits in the with the rest of my mutant cultists.

The downside is that this model is cool, but a little boring.  Also, there's nothing about it that ties in with the Corvus (the Latin word for 'raven'), part of the cardinal's name.

Another option that I'm mulling over is to make Cardinal Corvus a truly horrific mutant, whose visage is worthy of a mutant cultist's awe and worship.  One of the models that I'm considering is Wyrd Miniatures' Black Blood Shaman.  The model is wearing robes, of sorts, and it's head is definitely bird-like.  If the model is as tall a I think it is, Cardinal Corvus could keep his Large mutation. And of course, I would also have to add the Wings mutation.
