WHAT: Northwest Invasion 2017, a Flames of War tournament, Mid-War, v4 Rules. 100 pts

A Flames of War Tournament (WWII Historical Miniatures Wargame in 15mm)

 

WHEN: Saturday, September 16, 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM

 

WHERE: Guardian Games, 345 SE Taylor St, Portland, OR 97214

 

WHO, PARTICIPANTS: Any Flames of War player who can bring an army, and pay the fee.

WHO, SPONSORS: Sponsored by Rose City Dukes and Duchesses and Guardian Games.

 

ENTRY FEE:  either:

  1. $20 cash at registration, paid to barca (not to store personnel). All fees go to prizes for this tournament, OR
  2. $15 cash at registration, paid to barca , plus one UNOPENED Battlefront WWII blister pack, or unopened Zvezda WWII 15mm, 1/100 model kit. <edited 8/4>

 

RULES: Battlefront Flames of War, fourth edition, and v 4 Lessons from the Front , dated JUNE 2017. No house rules.

 

Army Lists: All Official Battlefront MW army lists: MW handbooks, Forces-of-War. See section 2, below for details. This includes "Fighting First" if that book is in stores before 16 SEP, <edited 8/4>

Team Competition: Oregon vs. Washington ALLIES vs. AXIS (will revert to WA vs OR if we get 2 more WA gamers)

PERIOD: Mid-War

THEATRE: North Africa

POINTS: 100

FORMAT: 1 day, 3 rounds, 2.5 hours each

PRIZES: TBD. All fees go to prizes. EVERYONE WALKS AWAY WITH SOMETHING. <edited 8/4>

 

1.       TOURNAMENT LOCATION AND LOCAL EATERIES:

Guardian Games is centrally located in the SE Industrial Area of Portland, Oregon. Just a few blocks North of OMSI, at the corner of MLK and Taylor Street near the Morrison Bridge off-ramp. Portland streetcar CL line, Taylor St stop. Tri-Met buses 6 & 15.

2.       ARMY LISTS:

Points value is non-negotiable. 100 points or less, not more.

  • Max number of formations in a force: 3 formations
  • Max number of formations that can be repeated in your force: 2
    • For example, if you have 3 formations, and 2 of them are Africa Rifle Companies, then your third formation cannot also be an Africa Rifle Company.
  • Max number of tank/armored car teams: 40.
  • Army list to be submitted via email to grognard_fow@yahoo.com NLT midnight, 10 SEP for validation.
  • I will NOT have time to validate your list(s) after 10 SEP.
  • If your army list is not submitted by 10 SEP, your army will not be in the tournament.
  • If you have questions/concerns about validating your list, submit it several days before 10 SEP so I can check it and get back to you.
  • <edited 8/3: I will make an exception for gamers using the "Fighting First" handbook, since that will be released close to 16 SEP. I would prefer getting your list ASAP that u know it, but for American Lists out of that book, I agree to check the lists the morning of tournament, so long as you show up before 10:30 AM on SEP 16>

 

3.       CARDS:

Since this is our first tournament using fourth edition rules, we will NOT be using the following Command and Objectives cards:

  • Fog of War Objective Cards
  • Afrika Korps Command Cards
  • Desert Rats Command Card

After the tournament, our group will try out these cards and have some discussions on the results.

 

 

4.       WHAT TO BRING.

In addition to the fee and army, you must bring your own:

  • Army list, printed, legible, 5 copies (1 for organizer, 1 for each opponent, 1 for yourself)
  • If you use proxies, the proxy substitution must be written on your list
  • UNIT CARDS for your teams (or Intelligence handbook that contains the same data)
  • Templates
  • Dice
  • Tokens
  • Measuring tape
  • Any bags or large containers you bring should have a completed luggage tag, or some obvious means of identifying the owner of the bag or container.

 

5.       MISSIONS (see the UPDATED More Missions online PDF) or easier-to-print version Flames of War - More Missions (no background texture) :

  • FIRST MISSION = MEETING ENGAGEMENT: Free for All (pp. 15-16)
  • SECOND MISSION = MOBILE BATTLE: Hasty Attack (pp. 17-18)
  • THIRD MISSION = MEETING ENGAGEMENT: Dust Up (pp. 11-12)

 

6.       TABLES REQUESTED:

  • 7 tables, elevated, Warhammer/40k style setup, with battle mats.
  • Table size: 4' x 6'
  • Battle area: 4' x 6'

 

7.       SIMPLIFIED SCHEDULE:

  • START/END: 10:05 AM / 8:30 PM
  • SETUP: 10:05-10:30 AM
  • REGISTRATION: 10:30-10:50 AM
  • START: 10:50 AM
  • END: 8:30 PM
  • Tear-down, put away terrain

I am requesting that as many people as possible arrive at or as close to 10:05 as possible so that we have maximum help in setting up the terrain (10:05-10:30).

 

8.       TIME PARAMETERS OF EACH ROUND:

  • SETUP/DEPLOYMENT: 10 minutes per round. Units not deployed after 10 minutes go into reserve.
  • PLAY MISSION: 2 hrs + 20 minutes or 140 minutes per round, hard stop.

         The number and choices of prizes will increase with the number of gamers signed up for the tournament.
         If you want a bigger selection, then recruit your fellow gamers to sign up and attend.

9.b. Prize distribution, 6-7 Gamers:
    Group 1: Top 2 Best generals (Best ALLIED, Best AXIS Best WA, Best OR), in order, by points, pick from the pile of prizes.
    Group 2: Random draw amongst these winners for order of picking from the pile of prizes.
        Best Painted Platoon
        Best Modeling: Warrior, Objective or Terrain
        Best Presentation
        Best Sportsman
    Group 3: Random draw amongst remaining gamers for order of picking from pile of prizes.

9.c. Prize distribution, 8 or more gamers:
    Group 1: Top 2 Best generals (Best ALLIED, Best AXIS Best WA, Best OR), in order, by points, pick from the pile of prizes.
    Group 2: Random draw amongst these winners for order of picking from the pile of prizes.
        2nd Place ALLIED General

9.c. In the case that the same person wins more than one category in Group 1 and Group 2, then after their first prize pick, their remaining wins get them tickets in Group 3 random draw.

10.   Awards for Prizes:

Specific Prizes are not linked to any particular award.

10:50 AM - 11:00 AM = Instructions, Assignments and Missions

 

11:00 AM – 1:30 PM = ROUND 1, Mission = Free for All

1:30 PM = ROUND 1 Determine winner, points and turn in results and votes

 

1:30 - 1:40 = Setup for “PASS-IN-REVIEW” (can setup before 1:30 if your battle gets done early)

1:40 - 2:40 = Lunch break and “PASS-IN-REVIEW”: Judging of painting and modeling (details will be in Player's Packet)

 

2:40 PM – 5:10 PM = ROUND 2, second mission: Hasty Attack

5:10 PM = ROUND 2 Determine winner, points and turn in results and votes

 

5:10 PM – 5:25 PM = Short break

 

5:25 PM - 7:55 PM = ROUND 3, third mission: Dust-up

7:55 PM = ROUND 3 Determine winner, points and turn in results and votes

 

7:55 PM - 8:10 PM = Tally results

8:10 PM - 8:30 PM = Award prizes

8:30 PM - 9:00 PM = Put away terrain

 

12.   Expected attendance: 12-14 gamers. If we get more sign-ups, I will try to get more tables.

 

13.   NOTES:

It is highly recommended that you practice with these parameters:

  • your army
  • missions listed
  • battle area (4x6)
  • FoW Official rules, plus the Lessons From the Front. No house rules.
  • Time constraints (setup=10 min, battle=2 hrs + 20 min)
  • Recommended Average Time per player's half of each turn: 10 minutes.
  • Review the Victory points mechanism in the rulebook. This has changed since the third edition.

15.   PASS-IN-REVIEW

If you are planning on entering any of the contests - Best Painted Platoon, Best Presentation, Best Modeling – then:

·         Before the lunch break, fill out a label from your player’s packet.

·         Setup your Army/Model/Platoon on the Display Table during the lunch break

·         Retrieve your Army/Model/Platoon from the Display Table before round 2 begins

·         Retrieve your score sheet from the GM before round 2 begins

17.   MATCH-UPS: Since this is a team event, then the match-up method is as follows:

No pairings will be repeated.

An Oregon ALLIED team member will be paired with an Washington AXIS team member.

Most wins and then most points will be matched together.

Table assignments should not be repeated

The are likely to be "Blue-on-blue" match-ups as far as Axis vs. Allies goes, since lineup is by team, not by faction.

Yes. As stated above, this applies to the "Fighting First" book, as well:

  • Army Lists: All Official Battlefront MW army lists: MW handbooks, Forces-of-War. See section 2

However, I modified the list submission (section 2) to allow for people getting their copy of the "Fighting First" book close to the tournament date.

I am preparing small changes to make this a "regular" individual competition in case there are not enough players on a STATE team to compete as a team event.

In that case, the state "teams" will change to Factions: Instead of "OR" & "WA", the roster and prizes will reflect "Axis" and "Allies"
