[Bland Title] Infinity Blog

Introduction:

I’ve been meaning to start a blog on this forum for a while, but always run out of motivation before I even make the initial post.  Fresh off the heels of OFCC, I am motivated and have some free time, so I figured I’d give it a go and see what happens.

For those of you who don’t know me, I played Warhammer Fantasy for many years, before personal life conspired with GW to put an end to that hobby.  Wisetiger and Muskrat brought me back to the scene with Infinity in December, and I’m pretty much hooked.

What do I hope to get out of this blog?

1.       I hope that having some semi-public pressure from peers will motivate me to continue to improve, make progress on armies and terrain, and try new things (and also playing games I guess).  I will want to have something to share, and that means putting paint to metal and models to the table.  So thank you in advance for keeping up the pressure.

2.       I had a fantastic time at this year’s OFCC and felt a sense of community that was lacking in the past.  I want to continue to participate in this community year-round, and not just at events. This blog will a good way of doing just that.

3.       I want to get input and insight into lists, painting and rules, and share my own thoughts, techniques etc.  Participation is a two-way street.  As much as I want to learn, I also want to teach and share, to the best of my limited abilities.  If anyone has a question, let me know.

To kick this blog off, I want to start with a priorities list.  These are items that I want to get done in the next month, in no order:

·         Must Finish Painting-

o   1x Imetron

o   1x Ikadron

o   2 X Slave Drones

o   1x Unidron Plasma Sniper Rifle

These are the backbone of any onyx army and will be used in almost every 300 point game.  These are all base-coated and need details and basing.

·         Want to finish

o   Overdron Batroid

o   Umbra Legate Hacker

o   M-Drone

Again, all of these are base-coated, but these are not as high a priority, but they are fun models I want to finish soon.

Once these have been completed, I will finally have a fully painted 300 point list:

Andrew,

it was great to have you Aaron and Frasier as a team at the OFCC. You table was one of the best tables there and your army was very nice.

1. I would love to see you not only at the Rampage, but at a Fall Game Night.

2. If you can make it to the Fall League, paint for it and post your results. I will count them.

3. I am no Onxy expert, so I will defer to others. I do know Ikadrons saved Cody from going into retreat due the baggage rule and are good edge protectors. Adam B. tells me Onxy is a hacking side and recommends several hackers to help the list move around. The TR Bot with mimetism, in cover, and marksmanship 2 hacking program is very nice as well.

Let's do this!  :)  Sunday night is Infinity night down at WOW.

I am in Newberg, which is a bit far.  I'm planning on playing more at Glimpses.

Super kickass, dude. Welcome to the Infinity crew. Come out to game night on Sundays (when the weather isn't trying to kill us all of heatstroke.)

I do not want to be at WOW this week, that's for sure.

We had a fantastic time as always.   We have already started planning for next year, and will be adding a second team to SH.  I was very motivated to paint the best table I could, and it worked out.  However, I have taken some feedback for layout, and won't have such egregious fire lanes next time.

1.  This year Rampage may not work out for me.  Creature #2 is due on 12/7.

2.  Which means that if I want to play more, I will have to come out to some Game Nights.  I will have see how that pans out.

They are absolutely a pro-hacking faction. Remember, those Unidrons in that link are REMs, so you can throw things like Assisted Fire on them. Marksmanship L2 on top of all the bonuses from a 5 man link is terrifying, indeed.

Yes, I'm surprised Frazier is still my friend after having eaten lots of Assisted Fire plasma.  Hitting on 17, only taking mods from camo and odd is just too good.

For updates, instead of painting my priorities, I've spend that last couple of night stripping my Rodoks to change to the new color scheme.

Cool to see you start a blog and I loved the paint in both your table and your models!

A couple of things about your list that I'd consider as I spent most of the past year playing Onyx:

-Consider running an E-drone. One of CA's advantages is how good our EVO is compared to everyone else. Given its access to a gun, extra program, and superior silhouette, it's pretty much always the first hacker I reach for.

-Swap around the combat groups a little. Overall I like the list, but I would also like to see the groups swapped around just a rad to increase efficacy. Try moving at least one of your specialists to group two and an Ikadron to group one. I'd personally put both Dr. Worm and Lt. Nexus in there along with an Ikadron in group one as this'll give you more tactical flexibility for Repeaters/Flamethrowers along with the ability to utilize your Engineer/Supportware without wasting orders you'd rather use on murder.

Thanks Kremmet!

If I drop the Umbra (which is an admittedly dubious choice), and drop the FO on the two unidrons, I can add a E-Drone and a second M-Drone.  I do like the idea of having 15 orders and a TAG.  E-drone will also help a bit with going second, Overclock and 4 units with B2 flash pulse.  Are 6 specialists enough?  I guess the answer is "depends on the mission", but for an "all-comers" list, generally speaking?

Yeah, six specialists is pretty alright although none of them being Infiltrators is a little on the weak side for an average list. That said, it's just something Onyx has to deal with in the same way that they have to deal with the very real possibility of being in LoL forever.

That new list looks great! I have yet to run my Overdron just yet, but that's a pretty solid murder list by my reckoning. The only thing I'd do is fiddle with the weapon load out on the Overdron as you could get a lot of minor changes through a weapon swap. Again, not something I think you need as the HMC is pretty useful given the lack of burst in the list, but it is something to think about.

Yeah, if I drop the HRMC and grab the Dual HRL's, that nets 17 pts.  Could add back the FO on the unidrons, add a second slave drone, add an R-Drone and still have 4 points to play around with.  But I'm happy with the HRMC for now, and will be magnetizing weapons loadouts, so will be able to swap around in the future.

That is a viciously effective list.

Maybe in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing... :).  I'll get there eventually.

Progress:

Again, instead of working on the priorities list, I worked on Rodoks.  They have been reassembled, with some minor conversions.

Having trouble adding images due to size restrictions.  May have to host elsewhere, stand by.

I managed to get a lot done this weekend.  Due to OFCC, I had been neglecting the garage, so I spent Sunday organizing my terrain, throwing away scraps, putting models away, discarding rattle cans and cardboard, and generally cleaning up the work/play space.

I also manged to get a little airbrushing in.

Here is some work done on models in the priority list.  Everyone had a good time hanging out next to the peach pie.

And I also got to work on some Rodoks.  Looking forward to getting these guys back on the table.

EDIT:  Also got some advice from Adam about how to convert the Overdron's HRL.  I picked up a jeweler's saw (thank you AmazonPrime for your prompt delivery), so I'll be working on that this week.

Got some more work done on the Overdron this week.  I've magnetized the HMC, and have been working on cutting the HRLs.  Adam wasn't kidding when he said it was tricky.  Here are some pics of the HMC, I'll take some of the HRL and PSR when I finish up tonight.

I'm especially excited to work on the TAG, because we're playing the tag missions at the Glimpses ITS event in September.  I've not really had the opportunity to play in many tournaments, so I'm glad to finally have a free weekend.  However, I don't really know how to tailor a lists for a specific mission.  I've done some preliminary work, but could use some help.

First Mission is Armory.  I want a unit with good close range weapons to take that room and hold it yes?  Rodoks have lots of shotguns.  This seems good to me.

The next two missions are Deadly Dance and Show of Force.  I still haven't been able to wrap my brain around how to play Deadly Dance.  Something about dominating your quadrant, bu the quadrants can change?  Can someone ELI5?  I Figure I'll want at least one TAG, and Overdron with HMC AP Mode is good for killing other Tags.  I'll also definitely want the Malignos Assault Hacker to keep things spicy.

For Deadly Dance, it's actually pretty simple. There are four quadrants with a console in the center of each quadrant. At the beginning of the game, you roll randomly to determine the quadrants each side is trying to control. This roll is pretty [big bad swear word]ty as you can end up with super lopsided games, but I digress. At the beginning of each turn after the first, each player with a Specialist in B2B contact with a console makes a WIP roll (Hackers get +3) with the roll being F2F if both players meet this condition. The winner of this roll determines where their opponent's zone moves to by flipping a card (seriously, why isn't this just roll a die?) from their Objective Deck with even moving the zone clockwise and odd pushing it counterclockwise. Dominating your zone at the end of each round is worth 1 OP or 2 OP if you have a friendly TAG in your dominated zone. There are some extra OP for killing more of your opponent's army along with dominating more zones and a Classified Objective as well.

It's a pretty simple mission with some [big bad swear word]y rules that don't add to much to the experience.

As for your lists, I don't personally see anything egregious that needs tweaking. Also keep in mind for central objective room missions that mines and hackers are excellent along with shotguns. Thankfully, Rodoks have all of those things!

Ok that makes sense.  The wording and rules are just more complex than necessary.

Here we have the dual HRLs magnetized for the overdron.

Looking forward to getting some games in at Fall League this year.  Will have to discuss with Yanyan as Sundays are usually family/house work days, but I'm optimistic.

Just realized that it's been a week since my last post.  I stayed home today to watch the eclipse with my family.  We are just north of totality, but decided that we didn't want to leave the house.  It was still pretty cool.

Last Tuesday I got in a game with Isaac at Glimpses.  We played Deadly Dance.  My tag got locked down by a missile launcher I couldn't shift, so he was stuck in my DZ.  I wasted too many orders pushing buttons that didn't need to be pushed.  Also got my first taste of guided ammo.  Ouch.  It was a learning experience as all of my games have been so far.  We discussed after the fact that the overdron is not idea for these missions.  They really want to hang back and use long range weapons, but the mission calls for moving across the board.  If I owned a sphinx I might consider taking it, but as it is, I think I'm going to try a Xeodron haris.  Mobile enough to get to the right quadrant, and K1 ammo is a bonus.

Also, I keep hearing that ITS season 9 is coming, and the missions will change?  Not having experienced this before, when does this happen and how much of the missions change?

I'll give this a shot next time for Deadly Dance and Show of Force:

One. Isaac is a great guy and a solid match. He knows the game well.

Two. If you have hackers, they can try to U-Turn guided fire as an ARO.

Three. August 30th is the release of the new ITS season. The new season may have a theme like TAG line. Missions are always tested. Some like Nimbus Zone don't work as well as others, so they retire the mission and add new ones like Decapitation. Expect a new mission or two and the retiring of a mission or two.

Four. Come play with us on Sunday! You know you want to. We can beers afterwords. Bring Aaron or send Aaron in your place.

Five. good for you for rounding out your overall Combined Army force.

1. Isaac is fantastic, and his painting is inspirational.  Looking forward to getting more learning experiences (read getting whupped) from him.

2. Forgot about U-Turn, also forgot that I could have reset ARO against the targeting.  Won't forget again.

3. So what does mean for Adam's ITS in September that has Tag missions?

4. I really do want to make it up, and Aaron has said he wants to get out more too.  We'll also have 2 new players to bring to the bootcamp.  As for me, I will try and come for the fall league.  What I really need is to crowd source an argument for my wife that driving to Portland every Sunday to play a game is reasonable.   Keeping in mind that she is pregnant and we have a 2 yo.  It's a tough sell.

Here are some pictures of the game I forgot to post.

Got some more work done over the weekend, despite having to come in to work on Sat.  7 Rodoks are nearing completion.  Last bit is the hardest, black lining and edge highlighting.  Also worked on a couple of Daturazi, and figured out morat skin tones.  The washes I got from Secret Weapon turn out a bit more glossy than I like.  They come down some from the matte varnish, but still not ideal.  Anyone have any suggestions for a brown/sepia wash?  Agrax earthshade is ok, but I'm still nostalgic for devlin mud.

Seven Rodoks? Jeeze....

interesting that you think the Secret Weapon washes are glossy as I haven't found that to be true, but GW's actual sepia wash is also pretty good. It's not as versatile as the SW one, but it works as an easier shade if that's all you're looking for. Well, at least better than Agrax/Devlin would as those are pretty heavy browns  .

Gotta have a Rodok for every occasion... 2 Paramedics, 1 Hacker, 2 Missile Launchers, 1 HMG and 1 Combi/Dual Light Shotgun.  As far as I can tell, you can't have too many Rodoks.

You can see in this WIP shot that the skin is pretty glossy.  This was taken after it dried.  Now, I may have over-washed, but that's what I'm used to with other washes ie wash the entire area, and then lighten up the raised areas.  I may have to return to GW washes, or at least do a test for comparison.IMG_5028.thumb.jpg.c548b4cb60a0d8f5e15b4345e1aca699.jpg

Hmm, that is pretty interesting. Mine definitely don't have a gloss finish so I dunno what to tell you.

Still, if you're thinking about using controlled washes, you should start making your own anyway. Dunno how much you know about paints so I won't go into how to make them.

@Rudra:

Yeah, inks are pretty useful, but I'd avoid them if your issue is ever about gloss as they are super glossy.
