Dark Trainer
I'm looking for some advice on a sealer/varnish for my Necrons which are a blue metallic paint scheme. That said, Testors Dullcote or Matte varnish would kill any metal paint. I used a semi gloss that I can't find anymore. That said, I'd like to avoid full Gloss and Matte sealers. I can't seem to find a semi gloss, only Satin? Is Satin safe to use on metal paint or should I just go full gloss. Don't mind shine, but wet isn't the idea? I was looking at Army Painter Satin (since they don't have a semi-gloss). Have heard about Krylon, but heard it's pretty glossy? Other suggestions in a spray can?
scottshoemaker
Try a two pronged approach. Seal first with a high gloss varnish. This would be the layer that protects the paint. Then use matte krylon, applied lightly, as a second coat. I've found that the krylon goes on fairly heavy, so the matte is more satin, especially over gloss. Even better, apply this second coat with an airbrush, thinning the matte to control it. The wetter a matte goes on, the more satin it will be. Obviously test it out first. I just went through all this to get a dead flat finish and had a heck of a time getting better then a satin.

What do you think about pure satin sprays?
scottshoemaker
Give it a shot. It's all a matter of control.
