Reviews online say it's worse than civ5. I own and am a huge civ5 fan, but bad reviews do give me lower expectations, which can make worse games better.

I have it and steam says I've put in 54 hours so far, but I think that probably includes me leaving it on all day or all night a couple times.  Its much shorter than Civ 5.  I've gotten through 3 complete games on huge maps in the time I've played.  The shorter game play means it plays differently than Civ 5.  I never felt bored and mostly wasn't just hitting enter over and over again so that's saying something.  I think the AI is just as meh as it was in Civ 5, but at least it tries to build naval units I guess.  The factions don't really feel any different, just a different bonus, no special units or anything like that.  All the special units come from your affinity to the different traits.  I would say that I was sorta disapointed with the number of the units in the game, there aren't many at all, but then the units you build in the beginning of the game are just as useful at the end of the game.

In the end I payed full price for the game and I'm not complaining so I think that means I like it.

Yeah, downloaded and enjoyed.

Not even a complete game yet, but I'm playing without help, on very easy, and in marathon mode for my first game. Good way to learn mechanics as they relate to how I'd use them.

Lots of annoying features, like changing all the symbols, but the game itself is basically the same.  Took me a long while to realize that the alien caterpillar hive thing was actually a cattle equivalent - kept waiting for it to attack me, but turns out you just pen them up with your workers....In general, I think this game would be a lot better having not played civ5, not unlike my issues in 40k and having too many editions in my head.

Anyway, it's better than civ5 was at release. With expansions, I think this is worse, but not too much worse. I suspect that expansions will make this one much more impressive.

I was super disappointment with this game. I had been looking forward to it for months pretty much salivating contemplating its glory. Then I played 1 game through on normal and have no desire to play it anymore. It is a pale shadow of Civ 5. Don't get me wrong, it isn't a bad game but I just feel like there is no point in picking this game up if you already have Civ 5. Civ 5 is better in absolutely every way.

For now, I agree. I think with a few expansions, beyond earth will likely be better.

I don't know, maybe. And if that is the case then thats super lame. It's not even immediate dlc lame but rather wait a year for a $30 expansion that will get it most of the way there and then another year or 2 for another expansion that will get you the rest of the way to it maybe being as good as Civ 5.

Civ 5 at release was an amazing game. The two expansions added a ridiculous amount of cool things and made it one of the best games of all time in my opinion. Beyond Earth had so much potential and just doesn't deliver. I think how boring the factions are and how very not different the affinities seem is it's biggest problem. In Civ 5 these factions had unique personalities. In Beyond Earth they are blank and boring without any sort of cool theme to them. No unique units and no unique buildings.

Have you gone back and played Civ5 without the expansions? Not at the original release, but later, after you'd gotten used to the expansions. Did that for a bit. Much worse than I remembered it. I'd place civ5 without expansions as worse than beyond earth, but only marginally. Civ5 with expansions is much better.

Swiched back to Civ5 (with expansions) for a while. Much better.

That said, guess they did a big patch for beyond earth. Played that again. Nothing huge I've found so far, but they do have an "auto-renew" feature for your trade routes, which makes managing that a bit more relaxing.

I'm still disappointed that the terraforming tech doesn't allow you to build on water or mountains...or just change tiles into other tiles.

EDIT: Patch notes:

In terms of game balance, the Wonders have undergone major revisions. One of the most consistent pieces of feedback the team received was that certain Wonders were built only rarely, and players reported that some felt like marginal upgrades over other resource buildings. The Beyond Earth team took a general cost pass on all the Wonders in the game, and changed the effects of most of them. Complete notes on the changes are below.

Additional gameplay balance changes were made as a result of the changes to the Wonders, but also in response to systems reported as too powerful. Trade routes in particular have undergone two important changes. First of all, trade routes are still one of the primary resource generators for a given city. Now, trade routes will be unlocked primarily through city population. Constructing a Trade Depot allows trade routes to be built and gives the city one trade route slot. Other trade routes now unlock at population thresholds. This prevents players from using small cities as massive trade hubs during the middle- and late-game. Secondly, there is now an “auto-renew route” option, as requested by many players.

Friendly aliens no longer prevent citizens from working plots, much to the joy of Harmony factions, who understand that nothing tills the soil quite like Siege Worms, and that Wolf Beetles are the mascots for many Academies.

The team also took the opportunity to fix bugs, adjust the AI, and add user interface changes.

We’d like to thank you for your continued feedback on Beyond Earth, and we hope that you enjoy these updates.
