Ordered Return of the Overseers (Firestorm Armada)

Gonna play Aquan Prime. This will be my second attempt to get into the game.

Initially, I'd be using the box fleet from Return of the Overseers, which is:

1 Aquan Prime Oannes Class Heavy Carrier
2 Aquan Prime Sulis Class Cruisers
2 Aquan Prime Shiva Class Gunships
4 Aquan Prime Chimaera Class Frigates

According to battle scribe, this is 500pts without upgrades or SRS tokens. It's not a hugely effective army, nor is it the direction I really want to go witht he Aquans, but I think it is a good starting point to get back into the hobby.

It's a good start and I believe it gives you a legal army to play. The rules are pretty loose with the point costs as a patrol fleet (smallest "army" you can field) is up to 800points. So anything between 0 and 800 as long as it fits the tier requirement is considered a legal army (Min 1 tier one squadron, 1 tier two squadron and 1 tier three squadron).

Now whether it is an effective army is another question entirely. I don't play Aquans so I am not certain. Aquans are generally considered pretty strong for all of their ships so any additional units would be to taste.

I happen to think that the ships in the overseers box are the better looking of the aquan ships so take that for what you will.

I had  a directorate army before, so I'm not helpless with understanding this game. After buying a ton of directorate, I found that their army just didn't fit my playstyle enough and it burned me out. I traded off the Directorate, but seeing Stubert play at GG really makes me long for what I did enjoy about the game.

Anyway, I've never played Aquans, but I really like some of their options. The Return of the Overseers set doesn't really include any ships I'm desperate to have, but I like it better than the Patrol fleet and I could really use the rulebook anyway. I also like that dimensional gate bit.

I'll be trading off the newly acquired directorate, should anyone be interested.

As for tactics with Aquans, they are mostly a mid-short range army. Basically, army is entirely Mines, Beams and Torps.

Unlike the Directorate, the Beams aren't turrets, but are at each facing with often stronger ones at the fore. Energy transfer (Beam) is a common upgrade for the Aquans. Like the Directorate, army is light on shields and cloaking devices. Aquans also boast impressive Wing Capacities on most of their bigger ships.

Aquans have the strongest mines in the game, as far as I know. That would be 12 dice of mines in one mine token via the Aquan Dreadnought and 3 Aquan Escorts (9+[2x3]/2). They also have a good number of units with the Minefields MAR.

EDIT: as far as army weaknesses, just about all of the Aquan Tier 2 ships suck. They have amazing Tier 3 Corvettes and all of their Tier 1 ships are amazing. Of the Tier 2 ships, they have some amazing escorts for Tier 1 ships, but not much that stands alone as a Tier 2 squadron.

I'll likely be using cheap Defense Platforms or Terquai (Natural) Allies to fill the Tier 2 void.

That said, this evaluation is prior to playing...

I think Aquans have 360 torpedoes which is pretty good.

Totally missed it. I mean I saw the 360 torps, I just forgot that other factions don't also have 360 torps.

Box arrived today. Awesome kits. Some of the Directorate make me wish I didn't ditch my directorate, as they look fun. Not switching back, just noting the temptation.

As to notes, looks like battlescribe has neglected to mention that the Aquan Heavy Carrier actually occupies 2 "carrier" slots and therefore counts as 2 tier 1 selections on the Aquan lists.

For those that haven't seen the Return of the Overseers kit, the two new MARs added to the game are:

Compressor Beam:

A Gravity weapon with the compressor beam MAR cannot use its weapons to execute a control usage attack in the same manner as normal graitational weaponry.

Energy Locus (Value):

Once per turn, an Aquan Beam weapon attack may be made by a friendly squadron with line of sight against the model with energy locus. The player then takes a Command check (requiring energy locus value number of successes). If the check is passed, this value is added to the total attack dice pool (after firing options). If failed, the value is subtracted from the pool, to a minimum of 1 AD. In either case, the attack must then be immediately resolved against an enemy model within 20" and with line of sight to the model with energy locus. Only one energy locus bonus may be added to any attack, and a model may not use the energy locus MAR on an attack it takes part in. Targeted strikes may not be made, nor do weapon coherence and MARs take effect, through the redirected attack. The attack otherwise follows all normal rules regarding to hit and AD modifiers from the attack models to the redirecting model and from it to the target enemy model
