A Train Car for my campaign using Warlock Tiles.Β I don't quite have enough pieces from the Town and Village set to make the full train without using Β a few stones walls... Oh well.Β

Those tiles make my whiteboard/dry erase maps need to be upgraded. Very cool!

I hope to give 3rd a big launch at the clubhouse.Β

I'd love to blow the dust off my dark elves. Never could figure out how to build the army with them being split all over the place in Sigmar.

    Β

I'm not a 'huge' fantasy player, but would love to get some learning games in and see what i'm missing. Never did get to play sigmar.

I’d find a way to play before investing too deeply - I know some game nights at stores and ORDO are going on. Β I’ve been playing in my garage (masked and distanced) for months.Β
    Β

ypu need to play - at least with what you have or proxies. Get to know the rules. Β Do t worry about paint just yet.Β
    Β

getting your head around rules - sequence and all that will help. The table top model and terrain are all alluring... but don’t let them distractΒ

I want to reiterate the importance here of what Torg said. It's huge.Β

    1. Be careful of theory-hammer. You might think that new unit sounds good on paper, and find out you fall short, or doesn't fit your playstyle/strategy, etc.Β
      1. Proxy units in some friendly learning games. Don't feel you need to blow your paycheck to get a full army right off. Especially since you'll end up like most of us with boxes never assembled, never painted, and you won't be able to keep up the modelling side of things.
        1. Don't be afraid to ask, wouldn't bug most because it's not about winning, it's about learning a 'game'.
        2. I once made a cardboard replica of a Necron monolith, and spray painted it black, and such was able to use it for a few games and see if I even liked it. Then, dropped some cash.
    2. Playing games helps youΒ find out what kind of player you are.
      1. A must spam everyΒ overpowered unit and leaf blow my opponent off the table.
      2. Balanced list for strong, butΒ friendly games.
      3. Don't mind the squishier units because they look pretty (do custodes even have squishy units?)Β πŸ€ͺ
    3. Start playing, don't wait. My first 3 games were two 500 pointΒ and a 750 point. I wouldn't go past that until you've gotten some core play in.Β However, 1000 points is a sweet spot to get to because games get more balanced and full feeling.Β 500 and 750 can be hard to beat a 2+ save, etc. Then again, these aren't about trying to beat you, they're about game mechanics. Then get more games in..
      1. Eventually you'll want 1500, then 2000 to finish off a normal battle army. HOWEVER, at this point you should be nearly a veteran and don't rush this. You'll find yourself 'behind' assembling and pains in your wallet if you go too fast. Patience and playing the 'long' game will help. 😁
      2. We usually do an escalation league, which really helps, but with Covid I don't know when I'll be able to run the next one at the clubhouse.

    Β

Lastly, you'll find this group is usually friendly and always willing to help. However, I find this hobby in general is mostly pretty helpful.

  4. Thanks for the info so far. Sounds like I can get the rule book free to start at least browsing. And then as far as rules for my army just grab the New codex and I should be good. I don't have any forge world so I don't know that I need the indexes. Unless any other old models are only in the index?

    Β

I'm going to place an order for the codex at least.

  5. With Covid and all, i haven't taken any time to get caught up with 40k. In fact, I skipped Indomitus and all that (local shop has Indomitus, but have most of those models just not the new ones). Mainly just looking to get caught up with essentials. Below are the things I think I need.

    • Latest rules? Link to the current rulebook? Is there one, or is it all index crap again?
    • There's a new Codex for Necrons or is it Indexes too?
    • Any must haves of the new models, or just 'meh' so far? Not a huge fan of the new design, but wondering about power and high end models of the new kits.
    • Any other insight?

Basically I already own a ton of Necrons, they've been my core army since 4th ed. Just looking to get my feet under me again and support my local game store with an order.

Ended up going with DnD 5e. Running the "Beginners Box" adventure through video chat for 3 beginners. Really enjoying it so far. Sent a bag of 100 assorted rpg dice to 2 of my players with this message attached.

EPIC, and that beginner mission is probably the BEST mission ever made! Easy, in depth, a great story, and SUPER flexible for DM's! (as long as no other player has run it yet).

Since the normal theater isn't a good option right now. I added a small home theater setup to my art studio. Pretty close to entry level on each component including projector, screen, soundbar and an hdmi hub so I switch inputs easily. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.Β

I'm curious to pick the brains of anyone who has set this sort of thing up. How have you optimized picture and sound? Whats the best way to arrange seating? What else do I need to know?

I helped a friend with a home theater (years ago). Sound wise, he just had your typical 4 speaker surround sound (with sub woofer)Β as the room was standard sized. Then he had 2 longer couches. The first was on the normal floor, the 2nd was elevated on a platform he had built to raise the room. Basically he did stadium seating to allow seeing over people. It seated 6Β easily, 8 if you had to,Β and with extra chairs on the side, could do up to 12.Β

As an alternative to stadium seating, you can raise the eye elevation of the screen too. Our home TV sits atop the fireplace about 4ft up. If we move our 2 couches one in front of the other, the front couch doesn't offend. However, looking moreΒ upward is less ideal than looking forward. There is math you can figure out about proper eye to TV elevation. I don't recall what it is, but google can help.

    Β

I also went to a party for my niece and the person hosting hadΒ a theater system in his shop (big enough for an RV or 2). Big 20ft screen and all. That was pretty awesome too! Playing Xbox on a 20ft screen was crazy.

  9. I second D&D 5th ed, and DND Beyond subscription is plain AWESOME (if 1 person bought the books, because you can digitally share it).Β

    • D&D 5e is super easy to learn (compared to pathfinder)
    • Digital sites like DND Beyond take away all the book reading to building characters. Being able to search everything, and have your choices reflected, and dice rolling with modifiers automatic, is just powerful. Especially for newer players. I own 5 books on DND beyond, and pay the master $6/mo subscription. I run a campaign for my sons friends, as well as participate in another that uses it.Β
      • Initially, I thought it was a nice to have. Now I won't play without it, even face to face.Β
