  1. Rambling a bit here...

A lot depends on how far you want to take the contrast between figure scale and ground scale. Since 40k has no defined ground scale (e.g., 1" = 10 yards or whatever) and on top of that has no defined time scale (1 turn = 1 minute), you've got a free hand. (And the more you tinker with it, the more work you make for yoruself, even if it's fun work)

For me, it's deeply unsatisfying to see a table of a theoretically futuristic wargame, with weapons that should be much more effective than modern ones, where it's as crowded as the mall on Black Friday (pre-Covid, of course...) and the tanks regularly move a shorter distance than they are long. That's why I favor using smaller figures on a standard table with standard measurements; it comes a little closer to the spaced out battlefield that I imagine 40k ought to have.

The absolute worst example of this is actually BattleTech, which has absurdly short ranges for its weapons... There are plenty of rationalizations for it, but at the end it boils down to "We want to keep this game playable on a limited physical space with weapons that have limited ranges" which is fine.

I'd say from a plausibility standpoint, btw, that "tank-only" battles should happen on pretty clear tables; there shouldn't be a lot of cover for infantry with nasty anti-tank weapons to exist, or they would be deployed on the battlefield in support of or instead of armor. Kursk instead of Stalingrad...

It probably comes down to actually playtesting it on a table and seeing what gives a fun game.

Using 15 mm models and the standard WH40k rules -- just chopping all the rulebook distances for range and movement in half -- would work great. To encourage tank battles, just make everyone use Spearhead Detachments.

I'll bet it would work even better keeping all the distances the same, just using smaller models. I've done that with other 28mm games (Bolt Action) using 15mm models, and it helps a lot with the "tank traffic jam" syndrome.

  3. To be absolutely fair, while I'd really like my FLGS to stock what I want, expecting them to carry several lines of historical miniatures in (minimum) three different scales and five different time periods is probably a little unreasonable...

At some point, I imagine we'll get to the point where niche markets like that really do get taken over by 3d printing in some form or another; whether that's personal ones, small point of sale operations, or the ones we already have like Shapeways. 3d printing is probably never going to be great for mass production on the scale of Asmodee or GW, but if you just need five or six obscure models on a monthly basis, it's starting to look really attractive. BattleTech springs to mind as one product line that could switch over from casting to 3d printing for quite a few units, for example.

Codices is the proper plural, following the standard rules for words ending in an “–ix” or “–ex,” for example appendix becomes appendices, index becomes indices, and so forth. Codexes is considered acceptable by most dictionaries, but generally discouraged by most editors... except at GW who uses it by default.

Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk.

That's why we have one sex but two sices. (Or more, for some species, I suppose)

  5. I second this. My family does it every year; we just got through a quarter cow, and we do a regular salmon share through Iliamna Fish Company. We also used to buy lots of 20 chickens from a farm out near Yamhill, but they stopped doing it...

Word of warning, though: with the current supply chain problems, even whole or half animals are getting a little more difficult to find; we've been trying to source half an organic (etc.) hog, and have had some delays because of more demand than usual.

Also, if you've never been to Gartner's Meat Market on Northeast Killingsworth, you owe it to yourself to visit. They're great. (Not cheap, but great.)

  7. Let me rephrase: Which of these would be the correct rewriting of the rule?

    A) The distance a model moves is measured using the part of the model's base (or hull) that moves furthest along the model's path (including parts that rotate or pivot).

    B) The distance a model moves is measured using the part of the model's base (or hull) that moves furthest along the base's, hull's, or rotating/pivoting part's path (including parts that rotate or pivot).

  8. In the sentence "The distance a model moves is measured using the part of the model's base (or hull) that moves furthest along its path (including parts that rotate or pivot)" does the word in bold refer to the model or to the base/hull/rotating part?

  9. Also, all of their games built on the Dystopian Wars engine - including Firestorm Armada - took hours to play, and not in a good way. I always felt like they were at least twice as long as they should have been. I understand that the final version of the game addressed some of the pacing issues, but by then I'd moved on.

(Not to mention they got the Halo license and biffed it. Which is a damn shame.)

Three or four squads of basic Troops, one or two Heroes, one or two supporting Elite Units, Giant Stompy Robots, or Big Tanks. That’s the “sweet spot” for me in any wargame.

Have one or two factions that double the above numbers because they’re “horde armies,” have one or two factions that half those numbers because they’re “elite armies,” for variety, of course... But that’s still within the “sweet spot.”

Yeah. Bolt Action and Warmachine/Hordes kind of hit this spot for model numbers, and it's one reason I gravitated to them after I burned out on 40k. But they don't have AdMech 😞 so I'd like to see that kind of game more often on the 40k side...
