I'm wrapping my head around the idea that despite the size and shape of my raiders and venoms, all measurements are done to the base.

I mean you only measure to the hull if there is no base, right? That's what that posted section says...

Does that mean that if I put a raider picket fence facing towards a unit, they can't be charged by it? They wouldn't be able to get to those bases with all those the pesky hulls in the way!

Monoliths are immune to charges right now, maybe Repulsors too?

Some models with bases have special rules that say to use the hull (which is the case for Monliths and Repulsors), or to use whichever of the hull/base is closer (which is the case for Raiders); if not, then you use the base. So no, your Raider shenanigans doesn't work, and Venoms don't stick out far enough beyond the base to attempt that anyway.

I'm saying that anyone who tries to draw LOS from the tip of a sideways gun barrel is cheesing the rules. Lack of facing is fine, I don't necessarily always agree with it, but it's one thing to draw LOS from a vehicle's hull in a reasonable position. It's something entirely different to take a corner case like that and abuse the rules to do something utterly ridiculous and stupid.

This is why I've become so selective about who I play 40k with. People who tout RAW over any semblance of reasonable thought and sensibility are people I don't want to play with.

It's not a corner case, it's explicitly addressed in the rules... I mean, enjoy your smaller pool of opponents I guess? Some people and their house rules, smh.

I don't understand. Are you saying you could rotate the turret so that you're drawing LOS sideways from the end of the barrel, as though you're firing a magic bullet out of the muzzle break? Because the first person that tries that [big bad swear word] with me is getting dreadsocked. Or at the very least permanently losing an opponent. That's pure cheesedickery.

That's...literally how the game works now. In your last post you said this conversation was academic because facings are gone, and now you're saying the rules are dumb because they don't involve facings?

Interesting thought... Rotate the turret as the tank moves so the barrel doesn't move at all...

If the barrel doesn't move then it's not the part you use to measure your move distance.

  5. 5 minutes ago, Sgt. Rock said:

Considering that there are no fire arcs for vehicle weapons, this is all a bit of a meaningless discussion. You don't need to rotate the turret or sponsons or whatever unless you just think it looks better, and anyone who's going to nitpick against you for trying to bring in a tiny bit of "rule of cool" by rotating your weapons to face what you're shooting at is probably a dickbag not worth playing against. Movement is the same; measure from point A on the vehicle at the start of the move to point A on the vehicle at the end of the move.

There are situations where you might need to rotate something. For example, if you are castling a Leman Russ behind an obscuring piece of terrain and surrounded it with a bunch of infantry, and don't want to move the infantry, then you can instead rotate a sponson or turret so that it can see around the terrain.

Much simpler solution: don’t treat turrets, sponsons, gun barrels, and radio aerials as part of the hull.

That'd be a house rule, since any part of a model with no base is now considered the hull:

In the sentence "The distance a model moves is measured using the part of the model's base (or hull) that moves furthest along its path (including parts that rotate or pivot)" does the word in bold refer to the model or to the base/hull/rotating part?

    Whichever moved the furthest

Is it that surprising that we didn't have the finer points locked down?

No not really, I just got the impression from your last post that you guys were on top of it

Even so, I think breachable shouldn't be used on ruins. Otherwise fly is almost completely meaningless this edition.

Ruins were breachable for all of 8th, at least for infantry. But what would give you the idea that fly becomes meaningless if ruins are breachable? It still allows you to avoid getting tri-pointed (without using the new strat), still allows you to ignore models/terrain while moving, still allows you to charge flyers, and still allows you to ignore models when charging. That all seems pretty valuable to me! But yeah, almost completely meaningless, sure...

But now that models can only move over terrain pieces 1" high or less...

They still can over larger stuff, just with a penalty equal to the up/down distance

    Quote

We had a standoff in my test game between my succubus and some grey hunters. There was a corner shaped ruin between us and neither had enough movement+charge range to get to the other around the ruin. However, we also couldn't move any closer, because the other would possibly be able to charge if we moved up.

The "breachable" keyword is there for a reason, and can be applied to ruins. That you guys chose not to make your ruins breachable is surprising and the only reason for this standoff.

This is a rule that most tourneys have used since the dawn of time, but it’s nice to see it codified as an official rule.

not true lol, ITC has allowed game-by-game toolboxing for most things for all of 8th ed -- only exceptions have been stuff like upgrading of BA captains to death company.

dont get me wrong, i like the change that's suggested by this roster sheet, but it is certainly a big change if TOs start to disallow toolboxing of all kinds.

    • You have to declare your "additional warlord trait", psychic powers, etc on your list, you can't tool-box a different relic or psychic power (unfortunate)

where do you see this bit? i see where it says selecting warlord traits is part of "mustering your army" when starting a mission, but it still seems entirely up to TOs whether they want to allow toolboxing or not.

  12. If anybody could help me out with some kind of tray to move my army around from table to table I'd really appreciate it! Flying up from San Fran so can't bring my own. Maybe the shop has ones but I've never been there before so don't know.

You can still shoot out of the vehicle when it not in melee.

yeah but if i'm disembarking after getting charged anyway, then i'd rather have a twin immolation flamer on the tank than a couple of bolters.

  14. Latest iteration has more distinct board control elements: sticky blobs to take key objectives while the smaller sisters squads screen and spread out. These are also supported by more characters than before: I'm now running three Canonesses, which are insanely efficient with eviscerators + the Bloody Rose trait. I dropped Celestine since only a couple of units (the Rhino and Seraphim) really benefited from the maxed-out Shield of Faith save.

A key tactic with this list is the Company Commander taking the Dagger of Tu'Sakh to keep himself and the Conscript blob in reserve. Normally Conscripts suck ass, but the Vostroyan First Born Pride strat will make them shoot at BS4 instead of 5, and proper positioning with my Astropath should make them immune to morale. Before they arrive, the plan is to be extremely aggressive with the Crusaders, who can take a ton of punishment with help from Psychic Barrier.

  15. Went back to the drawing board yesterday and decided that a more efficient solution would be to empower units like the smash captain and Emperor's Wrath artillery with a larger pool of command points. This time it's back to Sisters--a brigade of them, in fact--and the psykers are gone. Looking forward to trying this out tomorrow:

  16. Here's the latest version. I replaced the Manticore with a second Basilisk and used the spare points to add a mortar to each infantry squad, plus a storm shield to the smash captain. I really like the Manticore but this is more efficient, especially since I'm running an Emperor's Wrath detachment. Still has 85 reserve points for the assassin.
