Personally its a little stripped down for my taste. But its a good system, seems super smooth and its really great for introducing people to the game which is super critical. Although I don't really know what direction they are going to go after this edition because I don't think they can strip it out any more.

The best thing to come of it is D&D Beyond, which would be an amazing platform if it supported other older editions or eventually other game systems.

What about source material?  When I left 3.5, we had a crap ton between the 3 publishers, not to mention the Campaign settings.

Listening to my buddies talk, it sounds like PHB, MM, DMG, and Volo's Guide to Harry Potter?

They have done a much better job this time around with not too many splat books. I think there's also Sword Coast Player's handbook and some free stuff on the website.

Most of their new books have been campaign books which you don't really need if you're not playing the campaign.
