InfestedKerrigan
Game group wants to play some 5th edition. I haven't played since 3.5. Is it like 6th to 7th 40k or is it like 8th and I can jump in blind?
pretre
It's D&D. You'll be fine. It's not that far off from 3.5. 1

InfestedKerrigan
I hear feats changed?
Raindog
Feats are optional. 5th is 3.5 light. Each class has a few character path choices. Each path gains boons and abilities. There are no bad classes. There is always something someone can do. 1
pretre
Yeah, it is definitely an evolution/combination of previous editions rather than haring off in a different direction.
generalripphook
Personally its a little stripped down for my taste. But its a good system, seems super smooth and its really great for introducing people to the game which is super critical. Although I don't really know what direction they are going to go after this edition because I don't think they can strip it out any more. The best thing to come of it is D&D Beyond, which would be an amazing platform if it supported other older editions or eventually other game systems.
InfestedKerrigan
What about source material? When I left 3.5, we had a crap ton between the 3 publishers, not to mention the Campaign settings. Listening to my buddies talk, it sounds like PHB, MM, DMG, and Volo's Guide to Harry Potter?

They have done a much better job this time around with not too many splat books. I think there's also Sword Coast Player's handbook and some free stuff on the website. Most of their new books have been campaign books which you don't really need if you're not playing the campaign.
InfestedKerrigan
Sounds like buddy is going to run us through Tomb of annihilation startin in March.
InfestedKerrigan
I was considering an Oath of the Ancients Dragonborn Paladin. DM shared last night that we have the PHB, plus one book to make our characters. Any recommendations on books to look at for character material? InfestedKerrigan
A Dragonborn, Planetouched, or Tengu Warlock sounds appealing, too. What is special about the way they cast spells?
InfestedKerrigan
Rolling characters. I went with Half Elf Warlock. R went with Human Paladin. J is Drow Rogue. More later.
InfestedKerrigan
R decided to run a Barbarian who thinks he is a wizard (but is mono class barbarian).
InfestedKerrigan
I'm an Aasimar(instead of halfelf) Warlock with a Celestial patron. I'm going pact of chain to help with my healing abilities. Oh, and M decided to run a Bard of some sort as I understand it.
InfestedKerrigan
My patron could be my parent, right?
