Forgotten Gargoyles Space Marines

Starstriders have the same rule as the INQ which allows them in any IMPERIUM transport.

Hmm...tricky bit with the Starstriders is that every model has to deploy within 6" of their HQ (or all in the same transport), despite being multiple units. It's 10 models for all of them, so no Razorbacks/Primaris Rhinos. Granted, I could field less than all of them, but a basic patrol detachment is exactly 7 models, so still interferes with the smaller SM transport options.  I could do an Auxiliary Support Detachment and just take one of their options.

Really cheap compared to my marines, but not super cheap either. All Starstriders combined is 145pts and 15pl. That's 4x characters and 1x unit of 6 models.

Starstriders have very varied weapon options, but is mainly short range, low toughness, and bad saves, so the transport option really does seem like the way to go. Starstriders do have their own 40k stratagems, including one that allows them to teleport (all together).

I'm thinking I might run them without 2x of their characters (so 8x starstriders). Then put them in a Land Raider with room for my marine characters.

Got to test out my LR Excelsior:

Rolled terrible all game so not really a good measure of effectiveness, that said it was certainly a durable fire base. I think it would be a good addition to a better organized gunline, even a mobile gunline. A techmarine seems like a must have addition. Like typical land raiders, it has no melee protection, so I really need a counter charge unit, embarked or otherwise. And it has none of it's own psychic defense.

Various things.

LS Storms (2) are coming along nicely. Presently working matching the crew with my intended scout squad loadout (4x snipers, 1x combi-melta).

My paint scheme, I think I'm adding brown for cloth elements. This army has a very neutral color theme, so the brown both fits and contrasts well with the neutral gray and small green portions. Honestly, paint scheme is both lazy and simple.

I'm really bad at making save rolls for terminators (specifically them, the PA marines roll fine). I think I might have to drop them from any competitive lists. Not a huge loss, as that frees up the points for Sisters of Silence/Starstriders/INQ.

Thinking about building a HH variant of this army. No major changes, mainly would need a few 10-man tact squads with only bolters, and make sure the whole unit is MK3 armor. 

 

I'm getting the itch to work on my Chaos/Tyranids again. Hopefully, I'll finish the above before I get too into chaos/bugs.

That was a really fun game. Opponent had bugs. Very close game. Game ended in a minor victory for the opponent with the relic mission. Opponent had an Exocrine and Swarmlord remaining, I had 4 devastators - I had more wounds left in those 4 models than he had between his two Monsters.

Two more games. One was started while waiting for another game.

Did a 500pt learning game and went with 10x tartaros termies and my terminator chappy (2x auxiliary detachments) vs an opponent's white scars 5x TH/SS termies, 5x Revers, Chapter Ancient, and phobos(?) lieutenant. Relic mission. With all the terms fighting over the relic, reminded me of blood bowl, we really should have had a football shaped relic.

Game went very much in my favor. The dice were with me, and my opponent poorly matched his rocks against my paper/his paper against my scissors, and his melee units advanced ahead of his Aura units. Finished the TH/SS terms and revers without any lost models, and called the game there.

Second game was against the opponent who had bugs from two weeks ago. This time they brought DA. I had foolishly told my opponent I wanted to bring a knight and they hadn't faced knights since 6e/7e, so they built a hard list which was overly anti-knight they remembered the old knights with fear/scorn. Game wasn't very fun, just very bland. Tones of shooting, no melee, no psychic phase, no real tactics. Opponent won by first blood because we reached the point where I didn't have the forces to take his lascannon turtle, and he didn't have the forces to take my objective - so we each camped our own objective and called it a game.

Had fun talking afterwards.

I will note that game 2 saw the same dice from game 1 even out their statistics. What was rolling above average in the first game, rolled below average in the second game.

Opponent had new SM codex Salamanders, I had old(aka current) codex dark angels.

Red plastic is $10 random terminator. Got three of this sculpt, so ideal for a conversion.

Others are bits I had laying around. Real happy with how compatible the random terminator red plastic is with their existing terminator bits.

Wasn't until I was setting up did I realize the Caetus Assault Ram wasn't in my list. Fail. Brought it and everything.

Opponent ( @Hodor ) had a melee GSC army without allies. I don't think I've faced his sort of list this edition. I got confused by rules often, but I think I enjoyed the GSC as an opponent.

Anyway, opponent won, though I was quite happy with just getting out of the house and playing with an enjoyable opponent. Thank you @Hodor

Let's see, last night, unit by unit review. SM rule for Shock Assault is still new to me, only second game using it.

Caetus Assault Ram was supposed to be in this army. Apparently I forgot to add it to the actual list and so, while deploying, was thinking my army seemed really big and realized the flyer wasn't accounted for. So, yeah, this one wasn't used at all this game, but was an intended part of my army list. Fail.

Wasn't aggressive enough with the aggressors. Yeah. Opponent noticed and picked them off ASAP. Clearly they've faced competent aggressors before.

DW champion is still a waste. It's a character in the elites slot that should really be an HQ, or dramatically lower price. He survived in the game, but he got trapped in melee with a single unit of light infantry that cost half as much as he does.

DW Terminators combat squad-ed (so I could put both heavy weapons in one squad) and deep struck. One squad all TH+SS, one with all the ranged weapons. Ranged Squad used the DW assault stratagem (for 2 of my 4 cp...). This unit was viable. The SM Shock Assault rule they added is especially impressive on TH+SS terminators.

Interrogator Chaplain in Terminator Armor with storm shield is my only index unit in this army. He's index because GW doesn't make any Interrogator chaplain kits in terminator armor at all, and furthermore, they don't make any with stormshields. So, for some reason, the stormshield variant is index-only and will be removed from the game when Warhammer Legends launches. Annoying, but means I need to either modify mine or make another. Despite a lack of model, the Terminator Interrogator Chaplain is present in the codex just not with a stormshield option. Anyway, in this particular game, chappy failed two charges, never saw melee, had no shooting (because the stormshield replaces his gun).

DW Tartaros Terminators are a terminator glass cannon (carbon fiber cannon is probably more accurate). They suffered this game due to the chappy failing charges. They also suffered by not having a transport (which was the whole point of fielding them). They still did well, but not enough for cost. The SM Shock Assault rule actually makes these guys worse by comparison to the thunderhammers or fists because the increase in attacks is fractionally less impressive. Shock assault gives dual lightning claw terminators +25% attacks and gives TH+SS or PF terminators +33.3% attacks. Lightning claws already suffer from dealing only a single damage per attack, despite a cost that should be otherwise. That said, they work out if the Chappy is able to get them re-rolls to hit, which didn't work this game.

Librarian in Terminator armor did....okay. Got a perils turn 2, lost 3 wounds there. Opponent used some magic GSC sniper rifle that somehow causes Perils again, so died to perils and damaged allies. Did successfully cast Aversion (-1 to hit) on GSC Broodlord which made him retreat from melee, which gave me a small moral victory (I got a combat monster to flee melee, even if tactically). Another codex unit that has a stormshield in the index, though I don't think it would have helped in this particular game.

Tactical Marines did fine. I was impressed at how Shock Assault improved the melee neglected tactical squad. Almost Doubled their attacks. Might be worthwhile giving them a melee weapon sarge. Grav Cannons and melta bombs were a huge waste against GSC, not that I tailored to the opponent.

Devastators did fine as well. Was very impressed with frag missile launchers against GSC, which I rarely run in devastator squads. On the other hand, made the missile devs a high priority target and they died quickly. So, who knows.

Redemptor Dreadnought seemed to draw the enemy for more than it was worth. It's imposing, yes, but I find it very lackluster. Not being able to shoot while in melee, also really hurt this guy, and his attacks, even with Shock Assault, are too low. Really needs a stomp attack.

Warlord should have Stubborn Tenacity warlord trait, but battlescribe doesn't give the option. Devastator Sarge also has an unlisted chainsword. Master has the Foesmitter relic.

Nice fun learning game with the above list. Opponent had Astra militarum and was very unfamiliar with 40k. They learned a lot. King of the hill on a 4x4.

They won, which is how a first game should be - my list was bit too slow and the game ended prematurely due to a scheduling conflict. Since he had the only models on the objective, he won.

Being a tall person, I overlooked that a bit of rubble was taller than I thought it was and it blocked LOS from my devastators to the Relic's starting point. Plan was just gun down anyone on the objective, but that didn't work due to LOS issues. My fault.

Game was fun, but I couldn't get him off the objective and lacked the speed to take it myself.

Didn't help that as a codex marine player, my opponent had as many models as me + a terminator squad because codex marines got a substantial power level drop, while DA didn't. Though, again, the LOS issue for the devs, which was my fault, was the main issue here.

First time using the Ancient. Failed 5/5 tests to get extra shooting after a model died. It's a 4+ roll....going to try again, but if this continues, model will not be included in future lists...

25 pl game for friday and another 25pl game on saturday (patrol detachments only). This power level is working quite well.

Was planning to run 2x sniper scout squads in LS storms, but I can't seem to find 5x of my scouts. Beginning to wonder if I actually bought the second squad, or just planned to buy them. I had a list, but now I'm not sure. Missing a Land Speeder storm too, so they could all be in one spot...though the second transport doesn't matter if I can't find the second squad.

For my friday game, one of my goals is to show the opponent melee and the psychic phase. It's tricky, though, because my marine fluff is opposed to FLY models and most of the marine fast units at 25pl fly (partially because I'm further avoiding index and FW models for this). Storms with scouts was one approach. Bikes could work too. Could also try deep striking terminators - DA terms are tough at this point level.

I did find that I've overlooked one of my DA Warlord Traits. The Master of Maneuver warlord trait I had mistaken as being just for Ravenguard, but the second portion of the warlord trait actually grants charge re-rolls in a bubble. A really good trait for a TDA chappy, for example, who arrives from deep strike. I need to try this one too, though in the past, my bloodthirster with charge re-rolls fails both times...

Another thing is that I've been working on new models for my various characters to take advantage of the DA relics. It occurred to me one game recently, that I've really only tried a few of the relics in this edition and that was mainly due to a lack of WYSIWYG character models for the other weapons.
