Oathmark - General Discussion

@Tao Tsê-Mung and I had good game last night!

Oathmark was pretty smooth to run and we didn’t spend a lot of time looking up random rules in the book, even though it was our first game. The +x number being bad for your roll vs -x number being good took a bit to work around but wasn’t overwelming.

We also learned a good bit about list building. Champions vs captains, mages and their usefulness (lol), archers and infantry differences.  Large units and ranks and how important they are for combat.

failed activation tests are brutal! Both of us failed tests in critical situations which really changed the flow of battle. I liked it!

One big thing I was thinking about was how getting the charge off isn’t the end all be all. Because both sides get to fight with all their die, dispute casualties, means you can still do damage if you get charged and any death will cause a moral test. For example, I got the charge off with my Orc Warriors into his unit of ogres and proceeded to get a good number of hits and knocked off an ogre. However he still got his full number of dice off and did damage as well. We both had to take a moral test and a poor roll by myself ended up with my orcs being disordered. He lost his last ogre to a fire ball and my guys got routed when they took some losses to archers. I think in the end it made me less nervous about getting the perfect charge.

I think the little special rules per unit, like wild charge, courage, undead rules and others played a big roll in making units unique and keeping fights even.

also terrain has a huge impact on the game and I want to go back a reread that section to better understand how it all works

looking forward to playing more armies and with different troops from mine! It was a ton of fun!

here are some pictures!

Dwarven army painting commission is finalized and should* be shipped out by the end of the week.

I paid for a "tabletop standard" level of detail, with a little extra attention paid to the King and Wizard. So, looking over the photos, I'd say that they nailed it. I can spot a few small bits here and there were I think I'll spend some time with my own paintbrushes to finish them off, but nothing too major. I am overjoyed with how the shields came out.

(*I'm pretty happy with the service, overall, but the owner does seem to be a bit scatterbrained. He's responsive to all my communication and has asked a lot of good questions for input or clarification from me. But he has a habit of things like "I'll get back to you on Monday" and not actually doing it until Tuesday or Wednesday. Shrug.)

Actually, only three of those 157 models are official Oathmark miniatures. The rest are all from Conqueror Models.

Looks great @Ish! Think they’ll be here by Thursday?

Hope you shipped those dwarves express cause that silly “very dangerous, natural sprinters” quote isn’t gonna save them this time!

The Great Eagles of Manwë were able to delivery Thorin Oakenshield and company from the perilous wargs to the safety of the river Anduin… We’ll have to see if the Eagle of Ewe-Ess Pee-Ess can deliver my dwarves from the dark land of Utah with similar swiftness.

The painting company sent me a tracking number, for two-day priority mail, but the USPS website still shows it hasn’t been picked up yet. If they went in the mail Friday, they should be here by Tuesday…

Unfortunately… They haven’t even left Utah yet.

It’s weird. They were very responsive and very communicative throughout the initial process of discussing what I wanted done, how they’d do it, and the rest of the set up. Throughout the process of building the models, getting them painted, and adding finishing touches they were also quite prompt and helpful… But, for whatever reason, they’ve become oddly taciturn after everything was done.
