The new Codex: Space Marines will replace the current Space Marine codex, as well as the other First Founding and Deathwatch codexes – making it an invaluable tome that covers all those elements common across the forces of the Space Marines. A literal Codex Astartes*.

Players using Chapters covered in the last Space Marine codex can carry on using their expansions with the new book – White Scars, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Ultramarines, Salamanders, Raven Guard and Black Templars using their codex expansion in the Psychic Awakening series.

For fans of the Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Deathwatch?

If you have one of these armies, good news – not only do you get a shiny new core codex with loads of new toys to play with, but you also have a new codex supplement on the way. You’ll be able to tailor your Space Marines force to fully embody the theme and spirit of their Chapter, and of course, include all their unique units and heroes.

I know this will annoy a lot of my fellow players, but, allow me to say: About @&$#% time!

I have hated, hated, hated, hated, hated, hated the design decision to have so many separate codices for Space Marine for the last couple decades.

Yeah it felt bad as a Space Wolves player to be the last dog to the bowl last edition. It will be nice to not only be grouped in with the other Space Marine content, but get to see what all the other Space Marines get without having to go out and buy the "regular" Space Marines codex.

Space Wolves had one of the better arguments for being a distinct army list, seeing as how they had far more unique units than the Blood Angels or Dark Angels (the other "Big Four" that usually got a separate codex). But, honestly, even then it always seemed like something that could be handled better with a single Codex: Space Marines and a two page spread of rules for each of the "big name" chapters... and then put the super-special stuff into an optional Codex Supplement: Space Wolves that has the extended fluff, the unique units, and that sort of thing.

But even then I'm still in the same boat of having to buy my own Codex when it came out, probably later than the main Space Marine one, since all of our "special" stuff would be in its own book. This way the "big name" chapters get their own stuff at the same time as everyone else. I hope, since the Space Wolves won't have their own dedicated book, they won't skimp on the fluff which I do really enjoy. It would be nice to be caught up on galaxy events in the 41st Millennium since after Cadia fell and Vigilus became the new focal point I'm not sure what's really going on now in the "main storyline". That's probably because I haven't played 40k since last OFCC (sorry if mentioning OFCC was too soon).

In my idealized world, the main codex is the big fat $60 book and the supplements are thin little $30 books... maybe even $20 soft covers.

I would love to live in that world. Seriously tell me when you find it. Check to make sure it doesn't have Covid-19 first, then we'll head over that rainbow into that happy place.

Seems pretty clear cut that they would get hit with double fees then right? After all they're choosing to pursue a freemium pricing model. I think the delay has more to do with outsourced development and needing to port what were originally Android app design assets & architecture into Apple's framework. But who knows 🙂

The problem is Android SDK is in Java, and Apple can use Java, but it's mainly developed in Swift (which is Java-like, but handles things very differently). They can both use Objective C, and they use the same Data Bases, but the way it processes those DB's are very different. The operating systems in Android and iOS are VERY different in how they handle code. You can't just "port over" Android code into XCode and then let the interpreter compile into Swift and... it just doesn't work that way. They basically have to make two Apps or it will be nothing but bugs, problems, and DB errors all the time.

An example would be something like 2 + 3 x 4 = X. In Android, that might be X = 20. But in iOS, that could be X = 14. But you notice they used the same numbers (the Data Base) and the same operations (the programming code). It was how the Operating system interpreted the numbers and operations that mattered.

Totally! I'm not an engineer (though I work with plenty) and the difficult process you're describing is what I was trying to allude to by saying "port over".

Seeing all the negative reactions to the app, I'm shocked that they didn't just hire the team that makes Battlescribe; if they hadn't considered that, maybe they should now...

Oooh! I have a crazy idea! In order to give Intercessor Squads more flexibility during a game, maybe they could have a few guys in each squad carry some sort of harder hitting weapon or some sort of specialized weapon?

It’d probably be unfair to let too many of them have it. Maybe, I dunno, one in five? The idea isn’t to make them a dedicated anti-tank squad or a dedicated anti-heavy infantry squad, right, we just want to give them a bit more well-rounded tool box than just everyone having a bolt rifle.

This would make the Squad more Tactical.

Nah. This idea is too silly. It would never work.

Just to double check that I have everything in order before I start buying books:

  • Everyone's current Codex and content from Psychic Awakening is supported in 9th Ed
  • Chapter Approved 2020 is invalidated by the new set of point changes that dropped recently (?)

Please check me on the above points, as I want to know if I need to pick up CA 2020 to get my most up to date points values. Unless I'm wrong, the "magic trio" are Rulebook, appropriate Psychic Awakening book, and the year's Chapter Approved. Thanks all!

The Munitorum Manual is the latest point book I believe and yes the only thing you cant use at least in tournaments from 8th ed right now is the Specialist Detachments
