Brother Glacius
So for whatever reason, I'm really digging on the Space Wolves. I like what I'm seeing so far that is being released for them, and truth be told, I'm kind of a wolf guy. So really everything should be great for me right now. New book, new models, older ones are all pretty cool....world seems good. But then there's the fact that I own salamanders, aka the dwarf marines of 40K. Being a dwarf player, I really like their background too. However, they really are just green marines. So do I want green marines and wolf marines? Plus I really haven't done anything for the sallies except collect them. Quite a bit of the stuff could probably just transfer over to SW. So basically the question comes down to, is it worth having two marine armies? or can I basically get away with just going with the SW if that is the one I like the most?
fluger
Worth is subjective. Is it worth it to own anything in 40k? Depends on the person. If I had the means and the time, I'd own every single 40k miniature and have multiples of most of the basic stuff.
pretre
Yeah, there's certainly worth in holding multiple similar armies. That doesn't mean that you can't paint your SW in a Green Wolfy scheme and use models from your Salamanders in your SW army though.
VonVilkee
Custom for the win! Being able to mix and match books to your hearts content is cool each one brings something a little different. I wouldn't go out and buy two marine armies but if I had them I'd totally keep them and grow them over the years. I personally have bits for regular Marines, chaos marines, space wolves, and blood angles. Base Marines stay the same but the spice (support units) changes every so often.keeps it fresh!
fluger
Frankly, truth be told, I'd like to have multiple versions of Guard armies and Ork armies that each center on different elements of the Dex.
Brother Glacius
Well I'm trying to cut down my collection. I know, I know, then I'm just tossing money away, but I really do have too much crap. If I can sell my nids, and then release my Salamander specific stuff, then I'll actually be down to just five armies. Even that is really too much for me, but I'm too attached to the armies to let them go. I should also dump one of my fantasy armies as well...but that decision is a whole lot harder.

Yeah, I'm thinking of selling off the Tallarn part of my guard. It's just so much stuff. If you need help liquidating, let me know.
intrizic
What kind of hobbyist are you? Collector or Gamer? while they are not mutually exclusive, they do have different acquisition patterns. It sounds like you're a gamer turned collector. I'm a collector turned gamer. At this point I agree entirely with Vonvilkee, custom is the way to go, it allows versatility and agility in building lists. Lean and mean is the way to go. It's a good thing I don't have money to throw at you, because if I did, I'd throw it at you. I just LOVE Tallarn models.

Lord Hanaur
I personally think trades are far smarter. Selling things almost guarantees loss and at GW prices... Probably not the best plan because then when you need something you're that much farther from affording it. I love trading. mostly both parties end up about even and you certainly end up better on older models than you would have.

Probably not the best plan because then when you need something you're that much farther from affording it. I love trading. mostly both parties end up about even and you certainly end up better on older models than you would have. This is sometimes true. Depends on how your deals are structured though. I rarely buy at full retail and always make a profit (over the course of my hobby). In fact, I haven't spent 'real' money on any of my hobbies in 2 or 3 years. Of course, that's probably the exception and not the rule. I think what you're saying is that when you buy something new and try to resell it, you won't make your money back. Which is often true. As for trading itself, I generally like it although sometimes shipping can be a bear. Why, for example, are redemptionists only held by people who live in Canada??? pretre
Well, they are posted in Rogue Trading, so let me know. I'm in no hurry to ditch them, since I've had most of them for probably 15 years now.
