Unbound armies?

For sake of argument, if given the choice between bound and unbound, where are my advantages and disadvantages?

The BRB certainly implies that unbound isn't broken and fit for normal play. I'll admit, with my DA, I'd certainly rather not include any of their troops choices or "tax" special characters. I like the codex, though.

I really wanted to do an unbound list for OFCC this year.

15 skorchas and 30 grot tanks. I don't think I'll build it because it's unbound. Even though it's laughably weak, I think I may have trouble playing with it if I try outside my group. Being both unbound and having Forge World means (to many people) "WAAC douche, trying to stomp faces"

I think it was easy to build crap list in 6th, so many options, without the internet many would have been lamenting getting destroyed because they didn't construct their lists very well.  I think it's even easier in 7th with unbound to build a crap list.  Sure you can buff up on power, but you better be sure you can table your opponent if playing against a bound list because OS IS that good imo.  I'd play either bound or unbound, it's all fun to me.

I'll throw this out to the community, pure arm chair general style:

Build your meanest 1850pt unbound list, cream the cheese out of the BAMF.  Then compare it to the top 15 lists from BAO, NOVA and 2015 LVO, I'll wager the golden throne there will be a list to counter your bad boy.

I believe the stigma around unbound is groundless, especially in light of the more permissive allies rules for bound armies.

but to your question Pax:

For bound lists objective secured (OS) is AMAZING, I feel it really is all that and a bag of chips.  That ruled solved my only complaint about Wave Serpents, which was that they weren't jetbikes.  In 6th I would have to turbo boost a turn before I wanted to claim objectives because I would have to be within 6" of the objective to let my DAs out.  In 7th, because of the change to vehicle scoring and OS I don't need to do that, I can simply turbo boost over the objective.

Comparatively from previous editions, I don't think there are any 'disadvantages' to being bound, it's pretty much business as usual.  Allies got more and less strict all at the same time.

For Unbound:

Advantages: power power power power power all day power

Disadvantages: no OS, so you bets be sure to table your opponent, because their OS trumps your merely scoring units and their scoring units context your objectives.

I hope that made sense

I am in that weird realm where, once I get the rules down, I will prefer the unbound but until then I prefer not to use/face it. I spend time every week considering picking up Eldar exclusively because I like the Warp Spiders...but at the moment, the only way I will ever snag them is if I run just a unit or two in one of the armies I already have.  In other words, the advantage...cue sounding like a GW fanboy...is you can play what you feel like and that is pretty cool.

HOWEVER, when learning the game it overly complicates things. Not so much the OS rule as the sheer volume of stuff you have to remember to play just one person in some lists...in theory, at OFCC people will know the rules and have at least a working knowledge of the capabilities of most units so it should not be that big a deal from that standpoint.

I love unbound for the fact that it allows you to make an army more fun as you can get around the FOC when selecting units. If I wanted to run an Imperial Guard scout regiment and only include sentinals, ratlings and some space marine scouts I can.

However I also hate unbound for the same reason as for every person that sees the fluffy aspect of unbound there is one person who uses it to get a more powerful list.

I keep hearing examples of lists where players spam all of a certain unit type. I'm not really thinking about that. I just don't like being required to field, in example, azrael or belial just to field DW terminators. I'd love to be able to build an army where I just have the models I like and don't need to purchase/paint/build units/characters that I don't want. Like GK henchmen armies without the coteaz "tax."
