Fall Fow Tournament - is it time to start a discussion?

Late war or mid war? I'm in a late war state of mind right now.,, with the official LW tourney points being 1900. We could do a themed tourney like "Market Garden" or just do a normal tourney. Or get fancy and do a doubles tourney ... though that would be harder.

Battlefront lists 1900 points as the recommended size for late war in the 2014 - 2015 Tournament Season.

Flames Of War Events Worldwide
Points Totals For The 2014 - 2015 Tournament Season
The official points totals for the 2014 - 2015 North American tournament season have now been decided and are as follows:
     http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=57
     Period         Points
     Early-war    1390 points
     Mid-war      1710 points
     Late-war     1900 points

That being said, we don't have to use 1900...

If we are NOT qualifying anyone for the Nationals (see below), then we can set the size at any number of points that we can agree upon.

     Dates                     Event                             Period        Points
To Be Confirmed    West Coast Nationals    Late-war    1900 points

As for late war books, there are currently 15:

PAIRED LW HANDBOOKS
###################
FW112 Market Garden (Allies) - February 2013
FW113 Bridge by Bridge (Axis) - June 2014

FW114 Atlantik Wall (Axis) - 2013
FW115 Overlord (Allies) - 2013

FW116 Grey Wolf (Revised Edition)  (Axis) - 2013
FW117 Red Bear (Revised Edition) (Allies) - 2013

FW118 Fortress Italy (Axis) - March 2014
FW119 Road To Rome (Allies) - February 2014

UN-PAIRED LW HANDBOOKS
###################
FW232 Berlin (Both) - June 2015
FW220 Blood, Guts & Glory (Both) - April 2012
FW222 Devil's Charge (Both) - July 2012
FW223 Nuts! (Both) - October 2012
FW227 Desperate Measures (Both) - November 2013
FW230 Bridge At Remagen (Both) - June 2014
FW231 Nachtjäger (Both) - February 2015

With so many books, it is unlikely that any one of us has read or can recall all the sprecial rules covered in these volumes.

If we make the tournament this broad, then I recommend that each gamer extract the special rules that apply to their force, and have a copy of those special rules available for their opponent.

RE: ...complicate things?

One man's "compication" is 'nother man's "preparedness"

I like the idea of "Know your Enemy", but the original book is out of date.

Even if I had this edition, it too, is now out-of-date:

FW221 Know Your Enemy - Late War - 2012 Edition
http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=1730
978-0987660930
http://www.amazon.com/Know-Your-Enemy-Late-Flames/dp/0987660934

At least 5 of the LW books came out AFTER this KYE edition.

Having played US armor since Late War began,  I have noticed major playable differences in US Tank company lists from normandy to remagen.

BGG I think is still one of the best for US tank company, but I am more looking at how a Normandy list competes in tournaments vs how Later books perform.  The Normandy lists can compete but not as well as BGG or Remagen.  To me, LW has 3 phases and the lists from the first phase has difficulty going against lists from the 3rd phase.

The first phase being Normandy comp, and Market Garden Comp:

AT for sherman 76 is 12 and german infantry platoons don't have Faust on everything.

The Second phase being BGG, Devils Charge, and Nuts:

AT for sherman 76 is now 13, germans infiantry platoons are nothing but Faust RMG, and crap tons of panthers leaning towards being unreliable (not the stat rule)

The Third phase being Remagen, Desperate measures, Berline, Nacht Jager:

US now have Heavy Tanks and more AT13, germans tanks are getting fewer and more unreliable (not the stat rule), russians are getting fewer but heavier.

To me, it feels like LW should be broken down into at least 2 parts, 1944 LW and 1945 LW.

I know, I know the points are supposed to reflect it, but for US Tanks going up against German Tanks, They can NOT get enough of that higher AT13. Normandy lists allows for up to 9x AT12. Remagen can be up to 15x AT13 or higher.

  • 4 weeks later...

Requesting feedback on possible date, venue and time.

My suggestions:

Place/venue: GG in pdx

Dates: selected Sundays in October (Saturdays are quite booked at GG.):

-- Sunday, October 4
-- Sunday, October 18

but possible colision on 18th with "Wings of War" 'Couch Pilots' Gaming group, (if anyone does both WoW and Fow)
Time: 12-8 PM

setup 12:00-12:30, Start 12:30 PM, End  7:00 PM, Awards 7:00-7:30, tear down: 7:30-8:00 PM (closing at 8 PM)

120 min per battle, (x3) plus 15 min between battles = 6.5 hours

These dates appear to be too busy at GG:
-- Every Saturday in October, MTG - Saturday Sealed 12pm – 5pm
-- Saturday, Oct 3, 10:00 AM, Level Up - Saga Tournament
-- Sunday, October 11, Euro Board Game Day!, 12pm – 7pm
-- Sunday, October 25, Euro Board Game Day!, 12pm – 7pm

Open to other suggestions...

Saturday might work out for the tournament, after all.

I was trying out SAGA with jesselowe on Historical Game day last Saturday, and the open gaming area was not packed like I thought it might be.

If there is a big desire for Saturday over Sunday, it might be do-able.

We would have to coordinate with the staff at GG, to be certain that we could get enough tables.

Addressing Zeke's concerns, I analyzed the time periods of the late war books.

Here is the raw data, sorted chronologically:

FoW Late-War Handbooks    start    end
FW116 Grey Wolf (Revised Ed.)      1944.01    1945.02
FW117 Red Bear (Revised Ed.)     1944.01    1945.02
FW118 Fortress Italy    1944.01    1945.05
FW119 Road To Rome      1944.01    1945.05
FW114 Atlantik Wall     1944.06    1944.09
FW115 Overlord     1944.06    1944.09
FW112 Market Garden      1944.09    1944.11
FW113 Bridge by Bridge      1944.09    1944.11
FW220 Blood, Guts & Glory    1944.09    1945.01
FW222 Devil's Charge    1944.12    1944.12
FW223 Nuts!    1944.12    1944.12
FW227 Desperate Measures    1945.01    1945.04
FW230 Bridge At Remagen      1945.02    1945.04
FW231 Nachtjäger    1945.03    1945.05
FW232 Berlin    1945.04    1945.05

I charted the timeline and saw 4 clear groups:
1. ALL Late-War (15 books)
Sub-groups
2. JUN 44-MAY 45 (11 books)
3. SEP 44-MAY 45 (9 books)
4. DEC 44-MAY 45 (6 books)

To keep the choices simple, I propose one of two choices:

      A) We include all LW books in the tournament,

or

     B) The tournament is limited to SEP 44-MAY 45 [1944.09-1945.05] (9 books):

              FW112 Market Garden      1944.09    1944.11
              FW113 Bridge by Bridge      1944.09    1944.11
              FW220 Blood, Guts & Glory    1944.09    1945.01
              FW222 Devil's Charge    1944.12    1944.12
              FW223 Nuts!    1944.12    1944.12
              FW227 Desperate Measures    1945.01    1945.04
              FW230 Bridge At Remagen      1945.02    1945.04
              FW231 Nachtjäger    1945.03    1945.05
              FW232 Berlin    1945.04    1945.05

Any votes?

I'm for a Late-Late War using the latest books. Desperate Measures, Remagen, Nachtjager, and Berlin.  It would also be interesting to see how each of the lists from these books stack up against each other.

Also, Early November is a good idea.

Saturday November 7th or

Saturday November 14th

It'll also give use more time to prepare and advertise.

Shaping up the 5W's of the tournament:

WHAT: Flames of War Late-War tournament.

WHY: To get together with buds, bash enemies, show off, have fun, compete, win prizes!

WHEN: Preferred dates: Either Saturday, 7 or 14 NOV

Alternate dates: Either Sunday, 8 or 15 NOV

We will finalize the date with taran.shannara in the next week or two

WHERE:  Guardian Games, in Portland, so long as we can get enough tables on those dates.

We want to support our local stores.

WHO: 1945 point army lists, from Battlefront FoW Late War Handbooks, Limited to books that include the year 1945.

Going with the "1945 theme", these are the books that have armies in 1945:

FoW Late-War Handbooks    start    end
FW116 Grey Wolf (Revised Ed.)      1944.01    1945.02
FW117 Red Bear (Revised Ed.)     1944.01    1945.02
FW118 Fortress Italy    1944.01    1945.05
FW119 Road To Rome      1944.01    1945.05
FW220 Blood, Guts & Glory    1944.09    1945.01
FW227 Desperate Measures    1945.01    1945.04
FW230 Bridge At Remagen      1945.02    1945.04
FW231 Nachtjäger    1945.03    1945.05
FW232 Berlin    1945.04    1945.05

$ savers:

Some FoW stuff available on Ordo Rogue Trader: ordofanaticus.com/index.php?/forum/14-rogue-trading/

At GG (and also online), there are now boxes of plastic minis.  These are cheaper than the lead/resin, and have more bits (think 2 diff turrets per tank, variable guns, etc)

The infantry in the plastic kits have more poses and little to no flash.  Mould lines are minimal.

And last, you could always borrow.

Digital briefings OK.

Only limits are:

1) Official Battelfront lists

2) Unit organization still good from January 1945 or later.

For digital briefings: since they are not in any of the books, please bring a copy (digital or dead tree format), in case someone wants to review it.

B g,

Road to Rome has brit recce and goes to'45.

If you check forces.flamesofwar.com - digital - you will see 4 diff British recce companies, using reference "road to Rome."

If you use digital, you should not have to buy the road to Rome book.

Then your British have a company list for the tourney.
