Black Friday - APOC 2015 ? thoughts/ideas?

OK - preplanning for a new edition of Black Friday Apoc… 2015.  (Friday - November 27th).

Just looking at options and ideas at the moment.  Typically we try to do something cool and narrative… but it usually boils down to picking teams and just killing stuff.  This year I would look at it honestly and think that yeah - probably just need to plan on having a straight up team on team fight.  BUT, that doesn't preclude planning that goes against that at this point.  So basically, I am looking at whom would want to participate - what they would bring (basics really - noting any super heavy or titan stuff).  Probably limit it to ~8 players total - which team captains would choose from.  But if there are better options I am all ears to it.

So - looking for interest in the event - and what options you see that are easily realized in play and set up.  Rules at this point would be current ed 40k and Apoc rules.  Everything is subject to change - all depending on how these ideas shake out  .

Myself - Eldar  - with an assortment of super heavies - possibly wraithwall 40k list and bigger titans as needed.  (5000pts +)

I have always wanted to play an appoc game, I even bought (and sold) the current version of the rules. I had a Baneblade as well, sold as well. But are you local, as in Portland area? I am not sure that I can make that day work, due to family obligations etc.

Are you saying 5000 per person or 5000 per team? I have around 3000 points total, army wise.

Narrative sounds really cool as well.

I missed this one last year, but did it the year prior. Very fun. 5000pts of imperial loyalists is what I would bring.

Depending on your army, I could probably spot you 2000pts of marines. Though that said, it's pretty easy to raise your points when apocalypse is pro-unbound armies. (like having every tactical squad become a sternguard squad, as the two are the same from a WYSIWYG stance). And bringing every HQ/special character you own.

portland local - yes.  In the past we have played at Guardian Games … and other spots as well as WoW.  But nothing is set at this point - just looking at interest and ideas.

I mean to say - I can do 5000 points++ myself.  In the past we have been at 3000 per person or more - roughly 20,000points per TEAM /SIDE.  (40k of 40k  )  by no means is any of this set yet.

Warnings are that it is apoc - and the wish is for  big things on the table - as possible… per side.  When one team has a phantom titan - the other team needs to have a counter - or its a pretty boring game.  Space, even on a large table like at WoW is at a premium if there are lots of little units.  Big stuff that use lots of points helps a lot :)

An apocalypse idea I've wanted to do a few times is to have a game on 3 tables. Rather than a normal split of the table, have each team deploy on an entire table, with a further table counting as no-man's land. 2 objectives on each table.

Only flyers can travel between tables, but any unit with enough range can shoot between tables. Alternate deployment types, like deep strike, become very key. Could also allow normal reserves to enter from the "friendly board edge" of any table, rather than just your deployment "table."

I think it would be fun, plus it would make it hard to rely on a single unit or deathstar to hold the entire game. Players would need to plan which table their, in example, Phantom Titan would be arriving on, as it would be unable to transfer tables once it arrived.

Well, the best counter I've found is actually a smaller table...Those titans, especially, really suffer if they can't move much or show off their crazy long range. That said, the above idea would be a nice counter, because artillery units could actually function...

I may not be the best guy for playing in this event then, it might be a little awkward for everyone if I deploy my lone Imperial Knight and paper mache Warlord Titan onto the board and nothing else...haha!

Main thing in apocalypse is that you need to come planning to have fun, not to win. If you try to win apocalypse, or just try to be competitive, you will ruin it for both yourself and all involved.

Secondary points are making sure you are WYSIWYG and that you are familiar with your own rules.

ok - we can set those ideas in the pile of options - and wait for more to fall in :)

multiple tables - sounds hard to keep straight - logistically and time consuming for a one off game. ( to be done in 6-8 hours :) or so.  Sounds like a cool idea for some sort of larger narrative all day event though - I'd be interested in how it would work without having gamers running between tables in the time allowed per turn.

You can do a Apoc game with mission specific stuff - so smaller troops and standard 40k armies can be a factor.  (ie. holding objectives - demolition a particular objective…etc.)  I guess it all really depends on the group assembled and the game which will work the best for that.

-

For me… (Black Friday Apoc)… IS about big stuff you can't normally see on a table of 40k - en masse' … tanks - titans - with little guys scurrying about underfoot lol.  Not simply a bunch of standard 40k games on a larger table as one big game… but thats just me.

It would be pretty simple. You'd use three 6'x4' tables. You'd line them up facing the other table's long table edges, with a 2' gap in between each one. Functionally, it would an 6'x18' table, with two 2'x6' sections of impassible terrain between them (the gaps). Middle table would be the no-man's land table. Very easy to set up and take down.

So, range wise, you'd still use the same range and LOS blocking things to shoot the other tables. Gaps wouldn't block LOS, but terrain or models on the tables would as normal. 18' is 216" so it would certainly push the limits on many weapons. Basilisk would still have range for the entire battlefield, in example, as it has 240" of range...

Would eliminate issues with not being able to reach models on the longer table, too, as the gaps would make it easy to access models.

I do think it would both add a tactical element to the game, and really limit the OP nature of some super-heavies/deathstars.

Seriously...the above is pure gold for playing Apoc.

Don't play to win.  Play to play...

Something I would add to planning Apoc that is in my guide for next time I do one...Army Guidelines.

No more than a 2000 point CAD for your "main force".  Everything else fielded must cost a minimum of 150 points or more individually.

Set time limits on your turns...and adhere to them.  If player's cannot complete their turns in the time limit set, too bad.  Know up front this is a hard and fast rule...don't get sour if you get hit by it.

And seriously...when your biggest baddest thing on the table gets blown up by some lucky random shot...LAUGH about it.

It is Apocalypse for crying out loud!

<choir>.???? All good points and something that is pretty well adhered to with th Black Friday game over the years. The technical game set up issues are not in question for me at least.

Back to the main post intent - idea for theme (other than the standard teams v. team).

Secondly if your interested in the game - what you could bring / faction etc.

Echoing above, and adding. make sure you are bringing a few items with staying power otherwise I have seen folks put down, pick up and leave.

There's also a Stratagem that is often overlooked, where you can return to play, models previously lost.

As for teams, I think it would be nice to have a divided imperium apocalypse game, where the imperial armies were not all on the same side for once. We never do those.

Been playing Dragonage Inquisition. Borrowing their core plot, we could have a non-chaos being that appears from a rift, claiming to be the Emperor reincarnated with some degree of legitimancy. Then the Imperium splits again and we can have our apocalypse battle....

I can bring Chaos Space Marines. I don't have the new Apoc book but I can run the Lords of the Black Crusade and the Thousand Sons War Coven with an additional maybe 3000 points of CSM. I also have a Plague Tower built according to the original rules for Apoc (700 pts), would that even be ok to play?; because it looks like the only super heavy that CSM get anymore is that baneblade with the chucky skull puppet slap glued on top. I would need to know because I would have to fix it from it being dropped a couple times.
