  1. I think there are two other variables which can't be accounted for when determining pairings.

    1) Player skill- This is the hardest thing to judge.  If someone has a "killer" list but isn't a strong player because they don't play often or only play because of the modeling aspect of the game they may cause what could be perceived as a bad game because of the lack of knowledge of rules.  I'm not saying it's bad that someone plays the game because of the modeling aspect because there are some incredible people out there who play with incredible looking armies and I love that.  I just feel bad, personally, when I start to play and find out that my opponent is getting frustrated because I am using tactics which they are/were unaware of and it may be perceived by them that I am attempting a WAAC game.  It's the nature of the beast.

    2) Local meta- Some gaming clubs are used to playing a certain type of army because of what their local meta is.  If certain gaming clubs like to play strong magic phases then certain lists submitted may be submitted because that's what they are used to.  The same could be said about gunlines and monsters.  Again, there's nothing wrong with this.  In the gaming club I first starting playing warhammer in the norm was 10+ magic dice and 8+ dispel dice.  This wasn't the norm for other gaming communities and we found that out when we took our first trip to Borderlands back around 2005.  All of our lists were packed with lots of spell casters and more dispel dice than was needed when playing against the non-Eugene crowd.  The other armies had nothing more than a single level 2 wizard and they just couldn't get spells off without casting with IF.  Again, that is just how the different communities played.  The same can be said for the ones who still play with lots of armies using at least one horde.

I think it is extremely difficult to make a list which "you think" will provide a "good game" to unknown people when you don't know the above variables.  That was something I just wanted to point out because I was thinking about those two things after I made my longer post above.

Which leads us to how sports is determined.... The circle is complete, you are now in the matrix, don't get lost you'll end up like me.

  2. It will always be so, we released them in the past and the bitching was epic.  That will not happen again.  Placings dont matter, have fun, drink beer....repeat.

Ok maybe I'm being naive here but isn't epic bitching likely due to there being a problem? Also the action of not releasing a way of sweeping said problem under the table rather than dealing with it?

Do you work for theAmerican government? Full disclosure sir!

Well the math is there. Review, don't review, there is no dismissive.

  3. Actually no. You should not jump to conclusions. Sports was very high across the board. the lowest team averaged a sports score of 3.5. (70 points) There were only 2 1's given and both those were immediate discussions with whom gave it and action will be taken on them.  There were only about 5 2's.  so out of 420 possible ratings only 7 were below "OFFC" expectations.  I say that is a really good ration. 1.5%  I will take a 98.5% satisfaction ratio any day.

The difference is fav opponent pins.  they are what pushed teams way up.  with the highest teams getting 6 and 7 vs 1-2 pins.

But assumptions are all we can be left with when everything is behind closed doors. Were the 1's over ruled? Are those players not welcome back? These questions are not unwarranted when things are not widely known.

If a questioned is being asked sometimes before an answer is given it is best to ask why the question is being asked.

  4. My chaos dwarf list was a whopping 11.4 I'm the bull centaur guy

The other chaos dwarfs all made one very big mistake when making there lists for OFCC, they took 3 or more war machines and a kadaii destroyer. Gentlemen, you know thats is not fluffy! You shoot them down and then they fight the destroyer, tsk tsk, but then again, I was told my list was too hard, no pleaing them all.

  5. Well there appears to be a flaw in the system, lets see where it is .... ok if you won your games you appear to have done poorly in the sports category, could it be that people that lose there games use sports as a way to strike back at people? I'd say so. I got 2 favourite opponent pins and I was playing the dreaded chaos dwarves lol. Listen the sports system is so clearly dis functional something needs to be done about it.

You can not mark down someone for sports because of the list they are playing, the list raters approved it.

You can not mark someone down for sports because you dice were bad

You can not mark someone down on sports because you yourself are a bad sport and conceded the game in anger

Yet I have a strong suspicion that these things are happening, I don't even think they are happening to me. I mean look at team Ordo Alpha, clearly a team that comes from the very origins of OFCC it's self is the last place team in sports. Something doesn't feel right.

I had 3 close contested games and 2 blow outs. Of the 3 close games I broke bread and win with John and mosses, and the last game I already have a grudge match sent for hamslamwhich with grayson in bellingham. The two blow outs I was talkative and empathetic to my opponent, however I did not disrespect them by trying to throw the game in order for them to feel better, I feel thats a bigger insult. One of my opponents even conceded his game turn 3 and i still gave him a 4 for sport because his dice were so bad and he didn't flip the table or call me names (he did however rant about chaos dwarfs for no reason) I suspect both these players likely marked me down and with no justification. So when the games close everyones happy, when dice [big bad swear word] the bed and you fail charges and miscast, well thats not "the game" lets see here did i enjoy that game... no hmm well i guess thats a 2 or a 1. It's so ridiculous it's not even funny. If someone marks a 1, it should be an immediate meeting of the coaches and an organizer, A 2 should come with a brief reason why. A 1 or a 2 should be a serious offence and cause for not being welcomed back. I'd like to know what OFCC is going to do about what is obviously an issue in the sporting score, or should we rename the sports scoring system to the "Best car salesman award" or "people who are good at being fake award"

My team is came 17th in sports, but thats not why I am pointing this out, I get pins every year, it's something I have observed and am reporting, I think it is a concern and as the event grows larger so will the problem is left unadressed.

  6. A two vs two game sounds like a great idea!

Horrible idea, from what i saw people struggled with the rules this year, let alone how rules in a team game would work. If anything i think OFCC needs to streamline it's self and figure out exactly what it wants to be.

Merging all the game systems is more than just a way to make things easier on the organizers. it was a way to become more efficient financially as well. If they want to be able to go to big venues then they are going to need to bring in big dollars, this year it looks like entry fees brought in around 10,000 (19 40k 21 fantasy 300 a team) this will hopefully give them some serious leverage with venues. however in order to maintain this level or grow on it, they will have to make serious decisions. If you want to get bigger and become the premiere team event, then your going to have to be more open about scoring, painting, and sports. You will have to show how things work and why you are doing them, the scenarios will have to be more balanced yet still fun. If you don't want to do these things then i suggest making it a true invite only event and limit the teams to what can fit in a much much smaller venue.

The more people you draw from outside of your area the harder it will be to control the fun fluffy side of the event, people will come to try and win, I wouldn't fault them for it, the bigger the event the more glory to the victor. You guys are so quick to say it's not about the rankings yet you have rankings, award medals. The event is fun but trust me it has very little to do with the actual organization behind it, it's the people attending the event that make it fun.

This was my 3rd year at OFCC and it was different then the other years because there were less Canadians there I went out and got to know a few great americans. I had as much fun as I ever had out side of the event, but found the event it's self to be somewhat difunctional, from the room rates, to the obscure scoring system which appeared to have little if no checking system for abuse.

I hope you guys figure out what you want this event to be and then stick to it, I would love to continue to attend regardless of which way you decide to go, but don't be naive, this was not your best year and it was because you no longer have a strong sense of self and are pulling in two distinct different directions.

  7. Hello everyone,

I am happy to announce the release of the official Rules Pack for the OFCC Fantasy Open 2014!

This OFCC 2014 event will take place Friday, September 26th at the Double Tree Hotel in Portland, Oregon during the OFCC 2014 event.

The OFCC Fantasy Open will be a 3 round, no composition event where players bring 3,000 pt armies and battle.

Interested parties may review the rules pack in the Downloads section.or find it here.

Any questions may be directed to me via PM.  Rules Pack 2014 for the Warhammer Fantasy Open will be updated once a month as needed.

It won't allow me access to the downloads section. Can you just the rules in a thread so this isn't an issue for others as well

  8. Buh... When I went to the Team Check In thread, I counted 25 teams. That's 100 players that plan on being there. 70 spots open means there's going to be a very tight race on picking up the remaining tickets. Unless you guys are expecting 30% of those teams to drop out...

Which is why individual tickets makes no sense

  9. I am outright amazed by the fact that so many Warhammer players, especially so many experienced ones, can't come up with a median list.  I can hardly believe the assertions that building to a '3' is so difficult.

If it can't be sorted solo perhaps checking out some of the more widely utilized comp packs could lend some help.  Run the list thru the Swedish comp and see if you land around a 10 (middle of the road).  If you land much lower than an 8 then you are on the tough side and if you are below a 6 then you might rethink that list as OFCC friendly.  There are other comp packs out there as well - check out the ones used at multiple events as measuring sticks.  Don't get me wrong, I am not elevating any single comp pack as the end all be all.  In fact, I think that there are a number of players out there who consider gaming the comp part of their game and further consider that part of the WAAC attitude discussed above.

With all those comp packs out there, especially ones with 10's if not 100's of tournaments of play time, my real question is why didn't Ofcc just pick the one best suited for there event rather than go with subjective comp with a bizarre hard comp restriction?

  10. the virtual pivot would allow the random movement unit to essentially ignore the 1" rule during it's pivot. thus keeping the opposing unit from "railroading" it along a straight line. Raindog's clarification keeps the pivoting model from rotating into combat through base contact on it's flank with the intervening enemy unit. which also eliminates the equally confusing "you hit in the flank during your pivot how is that a charge?" situation.

    This exactly

  11. The dread sauron is bad ass. It's in combination with The Lord on carny that makes him really tough. That lord is about as good as the big beastie and more survivable. I can understand the misgivings.

I don't feel this list is too hard for many of the reasons veskit stated.

His list wants to engage you, so he won't be running away like so many lizard men lists do which is nice to see for a change.

His magic phase consists of 3 level 1 casters. Two on beasts which are mainly there to push wild form through and one has a power stone for when he really needs it. T he heavens Mage is going to likely default to ice shard blizzard which should help his combat blocks out in close combat since they suffer from low weapons skill. He also should channel a power or dispell dice every other phase with 3 channel attempts , one on a 5+ . The bastiladon has a bound laser gun on his back too which although random can be quite good. So with out a slann he has a decent magic phase and since his skink priests are cheap I see no reason he would fear a six dice cast to push through his spells when he needs them.

The weakness is really his magic defence as he only has level 1 casters, mind you one does have a scroll so he can shut down a key spell when needed. Still once that scroll is gone he can likely only stop one spell a phase and even then he might fail to stop it. This goes to the heart of this list, engage and fight worry about defence later.

His combat is strong but is focused in 2 units. The carny lord and the big bad Dino, kill one and he's crippled. The big Dino is the easiest to kill and with magic dominance with a level 4 he can me softened up or the unit fighting him buffed remember he is only Ws 3 so he's almost always hitting on 4s and he's only ld6 and not stubborn. The Lord is scarier to me because you need to kill both the rider and the monster to get points and he's not so easy to kill.

3.8 seems right. If he softened The Lord by removing the 1+ re rolling armour save maybe a 3.6.

Then again I'm just talking out of my ass

  12. I've been trying to adhere to the guidelines as much as possible. Here are my thoughts given the guidelines that I have read.

    1. Is this list in the spirit of the OFCC, and a hobbyist event emphasizing sportsmanship and fun games, or is it designed with competition in mind?

    A) I believe this is a hobbyist list, it's fluffy, fast and promotes combats where both sides will roll dice. The Bull units have been kept manageable so that infantry units will remain steadfast for a few rounds giving the opponent time to buff up his units with spells and if I lose a combat I don't have a BSB, so only get one roll of the dice to stay, mind you i have swiftstride with a lot of the units but the bulls lose a banner when they break and thats an expensive model to lose when you only have 6 in a block!

    2. Does this list have a theme, or are unit selections apparently made based solely on tactical advantage?

    A) Yes This list is themed, The only tactical advantage I see is the list moves very quickly and will put pressure on the opponent turn 1, a double edged sword for sure

    3. Does this appear to be an Internet list?

    A) I'd love for someone to show me an internet list with no war machines from chaos dwarfs.

    4. Are unusual, or seldom seen, choices present in the army?

    A) Bull Centaurs are rarely if ever seen unless someone is taking a bare bones 3 which is required for you to take the Hero Bull character (old old rules) The Lord on FLying bull is also rare due to him not fitting into the standard gunline build sdeen on the internet.

    5. Is this a gunline?

    A) I have guys with guns and they stand in a line of 10 wide? So literally yes???? Haha no this is not a gun line.

    6. Is this a MSU list?

    A) Almost ever unit is 300 points, I would say it's MMU multiple medium units which id what I believe this event is looking for.

    7. Is this a deathstar list?

    A) No, not by mine but some people might see the core unit as one so I am considering breaking it up....

    8. Is this a rock, paper, scissors list?

    A) Only if it plays an empire/dwarf list with 3 cannons, then I am wet paper to his sharp scissors!

    9. Does this list look fun to play against?

    A) I thought the answer was yes.... however not everyone like turn 2 combats

    10. Does this list try to break the mold, and bring something new to see?

    A) Mold BROKEN that's for sure

So what I see so far is a couple of people have problems with 2 things comp wise.

    1) My core unit is too big and potentially frowned upon

    2) I have 3 monsters and one of them is a Kadaii

Tonight I will post a variant list Likely dropping the extra Bale Taurus for a Bull Character, and making my fireglaive unit smaller and adding some regular dwarfs with hand weapon and shield or some goblin slaves!
