  1. Apologies for the late reply to this post, but you might consider joining the Portland Hobbits Facebook Group.   That's the primary way to reach Middle Earth SBG players locally.   If you're still interested in the game, we can probably find someone willing to split a starter box with you.  They're not available on the GW webstore anymore, but I know most of the local shops still have a copy or two.   Also - that's a good way to connect with local players if you're looking to get started with a learning game or two.

  2. Hi Norrad - so sorry for the long delay.   I pay more attention to the Facebook group than the forums these days.

If you're looking to get back into the game, the best way to stay informed is to join our Facebook Group:  www.facebook.com/groups/PortlandHobbits.

Most of our recent games have been home games or at Guardian Games in Portland.  We have a few newer folks in Vancouver, so I'll be looking to maybe start a regular-ish game at Dice Age Games in Vancouver.

I'd say we're gaming about every other week or so.

As far as armies present, we had 3 Isengard armies, 1 All Cavalry Rohan, 1 Minas Tirith, 1 Moria Goblins, 1 Mirkwood/Moria Spider Army, and one Mirkwood Elves Army.

email PortlandHobbits@gmail.com if you'd like to touch base further.

    Thanks!

  3. We had 8 players out on Nov 4, at Guardian Games for our first ever Lord of the Rings SBG Tournament.   Single day tourney, 500 Points, 3 games.   Great fun had by all.   www.facebook.com/groups/PortlandHobbits for photos or to join our group.

  4. Portland Hobbits will be running a single day, Lord of the Rings / Hobbit SBG tournament Saturday November 4:

Format:  500 Points.  3 games:  Domination, Reconnoitre, Lords of Battle.

Scenario details can be found here:  https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5YAoymxJYTfdkVMNERYSWZoVWs.

Event pack to follow, but some interim details:

    • Arrive at 10AM, games to start at roughly 10:45.   With 3 games, some time allowance between games and a meal break,  we should wrap up around 6:30 - 7:00.
    • Painted armies are NOT required, but there will be TP bonus points for fully painted and based (3 colors min) armies.
    • Army bonuses as detailed in the 2017 Throne of Skulls rules pack https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5YAoymxJYTfOFE2ajJ4LW82d2s will apply.
    • Generally, GW miniatures required.  If you have proxy questions, please inquire and request approval in advance of the tournament date.
    • Rules will be based on the"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" ruleset.
    • Profiles and army lists from the blue sourcebooks (Fallen Realms, Kingdoms of Men, Free Peoples, Mordor, Moria and Angmar) will apply, as well as those from "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "The Hobbit: There and Back Again", as well as Errata and FAQ documents provided on the Games Workshop website.
    • The profiles Gollum (free points cost from the Mordor sourcebook), and Tom Bombadil and Goldberry are not allowed in any tournament list.

We currently have 4 players confirmed, with space for up to 12.

  6. Jesse is correct.  GW's license only covers The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit.   Only material covered in those books may be referenced.   That being said, Lord of the Rings includes the appendices, and there's a treasure trove of information there, including several references to characters and events from The Silmarillion.

The Tolkien estate has been pretty clear that they'll never sell (at least not while Christopher Tolkien is running things) a license to be able to reference the Silmarillion or other historical "books" (aka collections of notes cobbled together by Christopher - although still very interesting).

  7. I'm in Portland, so am thinking event would be at Guardian Games, or possibly another local location.  Peter - does that work for you?

Andrewgeddon and/or Threejacks - happy to loan you some miniatures if you'd be interested in playing, or even for just a casual game.  I can field a fair variety of forces:  Rohan, Gondor, Isengard, Moria, Numenor, Eregion, Mordor.

  8. Anyone up for a Lord of the Rings / Hobbit SBG 1 day event / tournament on Sat, Ja n 14?   Probably 500 points - bring one army (good vs good or evil vs evil is OK).  If there's enough interest I'll throw in a box of something for the winner (maybe some Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs).

Respond if you are have serious interest, and I'll secure some space.

  9. For starters - anyone up for a 1 day game event / tournament on Sat.  Jan14?   Stephen G (Ring of Gyges) and I have been playing this (until my schedule got ugly in December) again, and GW has been pumping out some new material for the game.   Respond to this thread and let me know if you're interested, and I'll secure a few tables at GG or somewhere else.  Probably bring 1 500 point army (OK if good vs. good, or evil vs. evil), but I'm flexible on size, if folks have other preferences.   If we go tournament, I'll toss in a box of Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs to the winner.

New stuff from GW (see their website):

Hobbit There and Back Again journeybook - new scenarios, and updated profiles for all characters from The Hobbit trilogy

Plastic Lake Town terrain - pretty cool, and a shockingly decent value from GW

    Dain on Boar from Forgeworld

    Iron Hills Dwarves from Forgeworld

Dwarf Ballista (Twirly Whirly) from Forgeworld

    Stuff that's allegedly coming:

    Gundabad Berserkers

    Gundabad Trolls

    Gundabad Ogres

New Middle Earth SBG rulebook with updated profiles from LOTR SBG game.

  10. I didn't play much WotR, so can't really comment, but it looked interesting.   I agree that the skirmish rules were excellent (and I'd say the changes with the Hobbit SBG were really good as well), but for large scale battles, it could become cumbersome to deal with the sheer number of models, so I could see the desire for a unit based set of rules.
