When: 26 November, 1942 Where: On the road north to Mateur, in the Tine Valley, Tunisia. Who, Allies: US 1st Battalion, 1st Armored Regiment, 1st AD (Several companies of M3 Stuarts) attached to Blade Force, plus Assault Gun Platoon (T30 75mm HMC) Who, Axis: 190th Panzer Abteilung, Panzer Kompanie (mix of Pz III and Pz IV) Mission: No Retreat Terrain: Roads, Hills, Olive grove cluster of Buildings T-intersection, with US defending top of the T. The farm (3-4 buildings) is located above the T. The 3 hills are on each side of the T. Who, Allies: US Elements of HQ Co and C Co, 6th Armd Inf, 27th Armored Field Artillery, Elements of 1st and 2nd BNs of 3rd Armored Rgt, plus 5 new Sherman tanks to replace some of the Lees. Who, Axis: Kampfgruppe Koch, Afrika Rifle Kompanie plus Panzers (mix of Pz III and Pz IV) Mission: Hasty Attack or No Retreat Terrain: US defends long ridgeline, surrounded by smaller hills and a valley. German approach includes several small hills or ridges that provide concealed approaches to the US positions. While it organized defensive positions, a German-Italian armored reconnaissance column approached along the twisting road from Bizerte and Mateur. At 1430, the two forces clashed. The British force consisted of: HQ +3 CO. of 6th BN, Royal West Kent Rgt (6/RWK); two troops of the 360th Btry, 138th Field Regiment, Royal Arty; C Sqdn, 56th Recon Rgt, and Hart Force, a provisional unit comprising B Company, Carrier Platoon, and two detachments of the mortar platoon, of the 5th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. BACKGROUND: A reconnaissance party sent out by the Germans from Mateur toward Bédja on 18 November in three light reconnaissance and three heavy armored cars ran into an ambush laid by about one company of the 1st Parachute Battalion (Br.) near Sidi Nsir. The fight occurred only thirteen miles southwest of Mateur.11 The enemy force was completely destroyed or captured, but the British had to leave the captured vehicles behind. They were retrieved by another German reconnaissance patrol on the 20th.
