  1. There are actually a lot of good rules in there.

Drilled works in any phase so, pre-charge, pre-countercharge, pre-GG (but not FBIGO), etc. so it is stronk.

Earthen Ramparts stops charges and counter charges but does not keep frenzied units from declaring them (they declare and fail and don't move) so no shenanigans there.

Skirmishers officially do not grant cover to themselves.

The skink chief cannot fire the bolt thrower on the Howdah at his BS5 or BS6...

And the responses show that they actually considered how things would interact with other rules down to including many additional details (e.g. the dead space in front of the wings of a lance on a charge or the way marching column and impetuous/frenzy interact).

Bluntly, it is some of the best rules-writing we have seen from GW in years imo.

  2. Mild breezes of about 5-10 mph, sunny and 60 degrees.

I've got all but 2 chariots assembled for my first week of Escalation but the chariots result in crowded Tuskgor so I need to test my paint schemes and get started on those before I glue them onto bases or  I will never reach some parts...

The first round of priming is already done and drying in the basement.

  3. <shrug> If that's the answer, respect.  It's not exactly common knowledge though unless you look into it though so I didn't want to jump to that conclusion.

My wife and I have (large) animals, one of whom is prone to allergies and I had to think very carefully about how to set up a print station before I made a decision.  This is another reason for the questions about local support...  It makes a huge difference to know what you are getting into.

  4. Ok, many questions ensue as I just recently started 3D printing myself.

First, does he mean he'll take that one and you get his hand-me-down?  If so, what does he have that you would be getting?

For whoever is getting the new phrozen filament printer, what are you using it for?  Why multiple colors and why filament?  I am a resin user and I am painting my minis...  I find the resolution on filament was not to my liking and color is based on resin properties for me.

Regarding what he already has, if that's what you would be getting, what would you print on it and have you seen him do something like that already?  If he has the settings, resolution, print timing, etc. for the types of things you want to print now you save yourself a boatload of questions/problems in learning the process.  I have a local friend who has the same printer I do one generation older...  Using his settings, which are vastly different from the demo settings, has saved me probably $50 in resin learning the right settings.  I have had one print (only one) fail for settings, one because I misjudged the amount of resin in my tray and lost 4 models out of 20 in a print because my printer was just off level enough that they would not adhere to my build plate...  (Having someone experienced with your printer as a local resource is invaluable!)

  5. This morning saw the printing of a couple of movement trays and I just kicked off the first print of 20 bases.

My current shopping list is about 70 beastmen (covers my 2k escalation list and a couple of alternative 2k lists with different themes).  I have all my STLs and just need to get to printing.  I've ordered magnets and need to make a quick run to the hobby store for some magnifying equipment (this getting old stuff is for the birds, I tell ya).

Then I will have some painting to do.  🙂

  6. What are you going to do for beastmen?  Do you have models socked away or are you hoping for the new releases or what?

Personally, I am starting an escalation league at the end of the month and I am planning on printing my army...  MyMiniFactory users Beastarium and Claybeast have some really nice models that I am going to be using.  Was just finishing my shopping list up, as a matter of fact.

  7. (Well, ok...  Technically I am in Pennsylvania but I am closer to Calcutta and East Liverpool than I am to Pittsburgh.)

I've been working to get Warhammer The Old World going over here and have a group of guys from Calcutta to Youngstown playing an Escalation League right now.  Should anyone check back in and be interested in The Old World you can message me here at Ordo and I will get you hooked up with details.

  8. There's a fairly large contingent of people active on TTS on the "Warhammer Fantasy Battles & The Old World" Discord server.  If you are interested, you can join that discord with https://discord.gg/txVCQF2x6H.

In a nutshell, you can get all the tools you need as existing (free) DLC on TTS.  Go to TTS in your library and click through to the Workshop.  Then look for "Saharien's Warhammer Fantasy 8E Table".  It's got all the tools you need for setting up ETC-style gaming tables with all the rollers and tokens you are likely to need.  The next thing you need is models and there are loads of options for that.  If you search "Warhammer the old world" you will see near the top a whole bunch of items by Fetti.  They are complete (8th Edition) model sets for each army and you can download those and open them on their own or import them into an existing game.  They have details in mouse-over pop-ups that are in German but those can be editted so you can swap in English with all the TOW special rules and such.  (I have done so already for Beastmen, WoC and Dwarves.

Once you have those components, you need to build a list and go into the models and grab the subset you need for your army and save them as a separate object so you can build blocks and pull them out ready to go (keeps you from having to duplicate and align things as you go and also gives you the opportunity to put equipment and customizations on your models ahead of time so they are in the pop-up).

If you have any specific questions, get back to me.  That should get you far enough that you can start watching games to see how people do things.

  9. I mentioned this in one of the other threads but I will post it here as well...

Anyone who is intersted, Tabletop Simulator has finally gotten a number of useful tools scripted which make it fairly easy to play Warhammer (all flavors) on it.  8th Edition has continued to be very popular there and so there are tables and armies with ETC-style terrain and other options.  There are also a variety of different miniatures (all armies are fully supported although the ones I see in use most often are in German and I am only slowly getting a set translated for myself).  You can, of course, use the German versions with a book handy beside you and some of the tables have handy English reference sheets.

If anyone is interested in learning or pointers to resources, feel free to reach out.  (Or, if you are already set up, throw down a gauntlet.  I am currently trying to test out a bunch of Escalation lists to see if they are too crunchy to use with a bunch of new players.)

After the game I talked to my opponent about how nasty he thought the list was.  It's not like a Dragon list or anything but at 1k points he commented that the Dragon Ogres were hard for him to deal with.  (It didn't help him that turn 1 was Viletide successful on his Empire Knights and his Impetuous Pistoliers failed their test and hit a DO by their lonesome...)

I'm considering dropping the GW on the DOs for Halberds after yesterday.  It's kinda a toss up...  Putting Humies in tin cans seems to be a popular pastime so I might regret not having the AP-2.

To make this 1k version softer I might drop one of the DOs, pick up the other Ungor Herd and some more Gor?  Honestly though, the reason this Beastman list works as well as it does is because it overwhelms you with targets...  People look at 4 chariots, 2 Razorgors, the DOs, Shaggoth and monsters and forget to think about the Gor.  Last nigth my Gor ate a fireball that I failed to stop, were shot by a Mortar and still hit my opponent's State Troop block (With Oaken Shield up for a 5++) hard enough to put him on snake eyes and run him down.  I'd set up the Shaggoth for an overrun into the flank and didn't need to because he wsn't there.

  11. I think they're a pretty solid army in TOW.  They've got some weaknesses (poor Ld with no char higher than 8.) and not many saves to speak of (which may be quite common in non-Warrior/Dwarf lists) but they have solid, flavorful choices all over the list to compensate and with the Primal Fury/Blood Rage mechanics and their (costly) rare choices they offer a lot of ways to shape the list in general.

  12. The army performed pretty much as I expected it would.  Made my fair share of mistakes and had the typical ups and downs with the dice...  Rolled a pair of 1s for my General and BSB on turn 1 for Gaze of the Gods.  Walked slowly across the board and punched my opponents general (and block of State Troops) in the nose with half a unit of Gor, got the charge, got Primal Fury on doubles for Frenzy and made 16 attacks...  Broke him and ran him down.

In the end it was a resounding success with screens screening and hammers hammering and anvils...  Well, holding anyway.  Lots of flexibiltiy for blocks and a monster mash list.

  13. Dwarves are interesting...  Still didn't manage to make my first-tier list for collecting but as always they are up near the top.

The extension of Regiment/Detachment rules to Dwarves is certainly interesting (TK light chariots also got shared around a bit).

I'd kinda like to paint up some Dwarves myself but I need to get a couple of other armies that are more to my playstyle set up first.

  14. I have a real problem with roll-off each game.  I know you can resort to that but I built a list that (did|did not) include specific units because of rules and finding out that I hamstrung my list in the middle of turn 3 is no fun.

Specifically on the subject of Drilled there is noise in the community that a GW source has implied that this whole rule is an edit error where GW had earlier allowed Charges in Marching Column and changed it after playtesting.  I'm not sure I believe that since a) GW does playtesting? b) in what world would you have had a sentence stating explicitly that you could declare a charge in Marching Column if it was allowed anyway?

  15. The only thing I can say is that Drilled says "Unless it is fleeing, a Drilled unit may perform a free redress the ranks manoeuvre immediately before moving."  I don't think that's crystal clear but I think it *is* enough to be ambiguous.  The problem, though, is why Marching Column explicitly calls out that a unit can declare a charge (p. 119).  The next paragraph begins "Additionally, a unit cannot declare an impossible charge..." so there is no reason for the Marching Column to be able to declare unless there is a way ot make the charge move possible.  If that ain't Drilled then what is it?

  16. Regarding Drilled, I think you have to be able to use it before a charge.  Specifically, you can explicitly declare a charge while in Marching Order and specifically cannot make a Charge Move while in Marching Order.  Making that explicit in the rules means either that Drilled works or that they are officially screwing Frenzy/Impetuous since you can and now must declare a charge move when in Marching Order knowing you cannot possibly make a legal charge and therefore opening to door for every opponent to say "I don't care that you have a screening unit and I don't care that you know it is not moving, it *could* be possible and therefore you must declare it" with Marching Order as a precedent.  Since I really don't like that option I gotta go with Drilled works to make it possible.
