  1. My busiest folder looks like this:

    28mmSciFi
    .Terrain
    ..Buildings
    ...Greebles
    ..Scatter
    .Units
    ..People
    ...Bits
    ..Robots
    ...Bits
    ..Vehicles
    ...Bits
    ...Stowage

I also have a 6mmSciFi folder for BattleTech, and a 28mmFantasy, laid out roughly the same. Within that framework there are the folders for individual projects. If the files have really long names I may shorten them to fit on the LCD of my Ender 3.

  2. If I were going to wrangle someone into playing Stargrave, I'd just be sure they know what it is and what it isn't.

It's not 40K. Despite having aliens and robots, it's more similar to Firefly.

It also isn't chess, where you carefully consider the most advantageous move, and if you do this better than your opponent, you win. Stargrave generates narrative moments by having really swingy dice mechanics, and anyone can be killed in an instant.

  3. As complicated as 40K is, competitive players still manage to break it within days of a new codex or FAQ coming out, so clearly GW could do a far better job of balancing things if they bothered to do serious playtesting. So, either:
    A) GW is too lazy or incompetent to playtest their flagship product, or
    B) GW knows exactly what they are doing, and codex creep is the carrot-on-a-stick that keeps old players buying new armies.

  4. I admit many of the battle reports kinda blur together now, but Guerrilla Miniature Games did a series which I think illustrate a lot of things NOT to do with Stargrave.

Both players seemed to treat Stargrave as just an alternate set of rules for 40K and they were obsessed with fielding Space Marines. The high upkeep cost of the combat armor completely distorted the economy of the game and really punished the "Imperial" crew who tended to lose and needed those funds for replacements. They also largely ignored all the special weapons and just spent each game shooting carbines at each other, which I think indicates a lack of understanding of the game mechanics and cover rules.

  5. I'm not technically "new", I showed up and played some Shadowrun and some board games just before the pandemic struck. People tended to mistake me for Ish, maybe due to the gray beard.
Well, my employer has decided I should continue working from home in scenic Saint Helens permanently, which makes getting to WOW a challenge. So, I am wondering if anyone who plays games in Scappoose or Saint Helens is looking to adopt a stray.
I like RPGs, board games, and I even have an old half-assembled Imperial Guard army which could be made presentable with a bit of work.

  6. I probably should have started this hobby before the pandemic and its global supply chain issues. Creality got back to me just today to say that my printer has shipped, more than two weeks late. On the bright side, all the accessories I ordered for it like the aluminum extruder, are already here, so I can incorporate them into the initial assembly.

I currently have two spools of PLA, one from Hatchbox and one from AmazonBasics. A lot of PLA has been sold out unless you want strange colors or wood.

  7. I've had a Patriot 105 for many years. It's great for basecoats, zenithal highlights, buildings and vehicles, but I've never been able to paint anything really detailed with it, as some people can.
I have no real painting advice, but I will agree with Andy that the water trap and the quick disconnect coupling are both good. I have exactly the same coupling on my own airbrush.
If your 105 is the same as mine, the default spray regulator that it comes with does not protect the tip of the needle from damage. I bent mine repeatedly and even stabbed myself with it before I got a new nozzle that actually covers the needle. Highly recommended.

  8. Since there are only a couple of sessions to go, rather than work out all the fiddly details of my character-in-progress, I think I will just stick with Topper. Since the basic Decker archetype is pretty pathetic when there's nothing to hack, I'd like to retroactively give him a vehicle, an RCC and some drones. None of his other stats or skills change except that he has only 2.1 essence.

The Ford Americar has an autosoft which it runs itself. The surveillance drones all get their autosofts from the bargain-bin RCC.

  9. I talked to Inquisitor66 last Tuesday about playing a Rigger. This week I'll show up late and probably won't have my official character ready. I'm still working on the exact balance of "guy in a van" versus "Street Sam who likes drones". NEXT session I should be on-time and have all the math done.

  10. Heavy Gear Blitz is a streamlined version of the old Heavy Gear intended to accomodate a lot more units. It's more along the lines of 40K, and you command a force of gears and tanks instead of just your own gear.

I used to play standard Heavy Gear back in the old days. Though, if we're dusting off the antiques, I was partial to Mekton Zeta.

  11. Xenonauts is really good and captures what made the first XCOM fun without screwing it up; a surprisingly rare feat when classic games get a remake.
I confess I have not played much of the final release yet. I played a lot of Xenonauts during the Beta builds but I got distracted by the shiny new XCOM and Wasteland 2.
Still, for anyone who loved the original XCOM, Xenonauts is its true successor.

  12. Well, I don't know if it has great IA compared to other coop games, but Sentinels of the Multiverse does have a lot of variables so the game is never the same twice; far more variable than Pandemic. I guess the main question is... do you like superheroes?

  13. I had a few failed vox caster prototypes using antennas made of wire. Some were quite stabby; you didn't want to reach blindly into the box of miniatures. The magnet antennas can be varied in length, or removed when not needed for WYSIWYG purposes. Caveat: I'm not sure how well primer will stick to the nickel coating of the magnets.

  14. At the moment I'm pondering how to turn all these Fantasy and Grey Knight bits I got from eBay into Imperial Missionaries for my Guard (nothing to show for that at the moment beside a pile of bits). Recently, I was magnetizing my Rheboks and giving some of my Storm Troopers vox caster antennas.
