  1. I decided to pull the trigger on buying a 3D printer about 4 weeks ago, a Prusa i3 Mk3 kit.

It arrived two weeks later and after a slow and methodical assembly, I got it up and running.

After two weeks of constant printing, I now have a pile of terrain.

I have a long way to go in getting a whole 6x4 table, but that is my goal (for now.) 🙂

Sounds like we need to have a papercraft terrain party.

Perhaps we could also talk @evil_bryan into showing us how to use his foam slicing stuff so we can make our own hills/cliffs/impassable on the super cheap.

Your point about the time variable is well put though, making terrain takes a long time until we find some good hax.

Friends don't let friends buy 2D terrain, even if that is what the fancy pants Europeans all use.

Or we could have an actual terrain party 🙂

I have the tools at the club and would be happy to assist in a terrain building session.

The first question I have is what type of terrain you are looking for. I probably have an idea and/or technique to build just about anything you are looking for. 🙂

I agree completely with the difficulties that were laid out in the original post by evil_bryan.  Not one point of disagreement

I acknowledge that its difficult, but I think that you can go to any tournament and get the same spread of "okay that wasn't so bad" and the "Good lord, does that man have no SOUL" type lists that you get at OFCC when there is no rating.

I valued the hard work people did on ratings.  We mostly shot for lower rated armies anyways and always had themes that were necessarily restrictive but, well, themed.  We did Rolling thunder where all things had to be on servos or in a transport.  We did hordes with no less than 120 models.  We did all Tau with Stealthsuits and Everyone had to feature Stingwings. And so on.  We knew it was hard work to grade these, but we were appreciative that they did.

We didn't really consider going this year. or last year.  It wasn't a protest or anything dramatic like that.  It's just that the event sort of (by which I mean 100% exactly) turned into a painting contest the last year we went; and now list rating which was what made it special, is gone (and had in fact kind of been gone for all practical purposes before that because of the crazy stuff people wanted to allow).

I for one definitely miss the spirit of the event.  The people have almost always been fun.  But that would have happened without OFCC.  What OFCC brought was a different set of rules that made the games more fun intrinsically, instead of simply relying on a great guy to continue to be a great guy which he was probably going to be anyways.

I tell people about OFCC all the time, but now I just tell them "don't go if you aren't a world class painter.  The cost is pretty high and it's pretty much the lists you always see at any lower priced event."  Saying that makes me super sad.

It is too bad you have missed that last couple of years as I have personally run the 40K event, and I think we have addressed several of the issues you mentioned here.

Let me tackle the big one, the painting score 🙂

Last year, I overhauled the way paint is measured. I wanted to make good scores achievable and make it easy to evaluate on a large scale. I also wanted to make the scores as objective as possible so that two people could come to the same conclusion on scoring.

In addition, I changed the weight of paint score in the calculation for Best Overall.

    • Best Overall = 40% Sports, 25% Painting, 30% Spirit, and 5% Captain Achievements

Pasted below for your reading pleasure is my paint scoring rubric.

    Scoring Criteria

    Basing
    Textured/painted/flocked/resin/etc.

    Painting
    Represents the three-color minimum

    Depth
Extra care for shading and highlighting

    Detail
    Modeling, conversions, putty work, etc...

    WOW Factor
A great representation of an army/faction/team

    Basing
0 - Bare plastic or resin, void of paint or basing material
1 - Paint or basing material applied
2 - Multiple colors, a variety of material, the bases demonstrate a level of care and effort

    Painting
0 - Bare plastic, only primer, less than 3 colors
1 - 3 or more colors, generally referred to as tabletop standard
2 - A variety of colors, shades, and tones setting the model apart from the standard

    Depth
0 - No effort made to illustrate the depth of the model's details
1 - Drybrushing, washing, edge highlighting to varying degrees
2 - Blending, smooth transitions, skillful application of the techniques listed at level 1

    Detail
0 - Model is built as designed with no variation
1 - Some conversion work, purposeful construction to demonstrate variety, scratch building, minor sculpting
2 - Heavy conversion, extensive scratch building and/or sculpting, clearly a unique representation of the army

    WOW Factor
0 - A tabletop presentation that does not go far enough to stand out from the crowd
1 - Unified and cohesive, can definitely stand out as an excellent example of the force represented
2 - A true showcase, representing the highest level of skill and technique of our hobby

  4. Okay, now that I have an appropriate click bait title for what can be an emotionally charged issue I can get started. 🙂

After answering this question for one of the captains, I thought it would be useful to post my position so others had the opportunity to judge me harshly. 🙂

Not having list rating in this year's 40K OFCC reflects my personal opinion on it not being worth the effort it takes. I have a few issues with list rating that I am happy to share to better frame my decision not to have it.
    • List rating requires early list submission, which historically has been a challenge for many teams
    • List rating is terribly subjective, and the only way to minimize that is to have lots of raters reviewing the same lists to come to an average score
    • List rating is very time intensive, which is multiplied as you have more the one person rating the same lists
    • List rating requires an encyclopedic knowledge of all of the various 40K armies, rules, and unit interactions
    • Finally, list rating causes drama because regardless of how hard you try there will be folks who are unhappy with their rating

My alternative to list rating is reward versus restriction. With achievements like Old School and No Surprises, I want to encourage people to build friendlier lists and openly share them with the community (who can provide feedback as needed.) Also, tools like Challenge matches and the Captain's forum can also be leveraged to further enhance the team/player experience. It is not a perfect system and still needs work, but I believe it is the better way to go.

Now that I have said my piece, let the judging and feedback commence!

  5. @merkthejerk I am so sorry you had such a poor experience during the weekend. Although we cannot guarantee that everyone has a great time, we certainly want to make every effort to make that possible. Please know that if you or anyone is not having the expected OFCC experience, you or your captain can track me (or anyone other organizer down) so we can address it as its happening. 🙂

@Kolby Hopkins You are correct that match-ups were not performance based. All match-ups were built prior to the event using the following methodology

    • First, arrange all challenge matches
    • Then avoid matching up team from the same club/region
    • Finally, ensure no one plays the same team twice

Since OFCC is an event rather than a tournament, we focus on doing our best to provide variety in match ups. I hope that clarifies the process when I run the event. 🙂

I blame munkie! Did you pay, oh yeah... then turns in list a day late! To his credit he owned these facts... perhaps I'll push harder for old school lists next year...

@evil_bryan, will grognard lists be a thing again next year? (I refuse to call them old school as my actually old school list didn't qualify but something with a shiny new unit did...)

That is a good question....if I am running the 40K team event then probably. 🙂

  7. A common question I receive Post-OFCC is "How can my team improve next year?" and I think the easiest way is to work on the pre-event scoring opportunities.

Here is a list of all the points earned prior to event weekend:

    A Club Underdogs 2
    Ad Hoc 4
    Fanger Zone 2
    Get off my LAN 12
    Grimdrunk 6
    Infil-Traitors 8
    Just the Dickel 6
    Kill! Maim! Beer! 6
    Ordo East 10
    Silence of the Warp 2
    Team Diversity 4
    Team FURY 4
    The Emperor's Neckbeards 6
    These are NOT dollies 4
Wake me up when the group is full 4

Special recognition must be paid to Get of my LAN for getting max points...good work guys!!! Ordo East got close, but those pesky New School lists did them in. 🙂

  8. For those of you who are curious on how Sportsmanship was calculated, here it is:

Each player could earn up to 3 points per match, with 20 games played across the team that gives a maximum score of 60 points.

Each team was awarded 2 bonus points for each Favorite Opponent pin earned.

Finally, each pre-game Sportsmanship achievement (Old School and No Surprises) each also provided 2 bonus points

The good news is IF the point value of the FO pins was 1 point versus 2, the Warhamsters would still be the winner 🙂

Sneaky Git Mission specific questions of sneaky-gitted-sneaky-ness of git-dom:

Can an Objective (a Grot, Control Unit, or Energy Nexus in Missions 1, 3, and 5, respectively) be claimed PRIOR to turn 1 by way of before-the-first-turn Vanguard moves, Scout moves, Infiltrator deployment, redeployment via special ability, Genestealer Cult  ability, or other shenanigans? (Shenanigans like Act-of-Faith moves, etc, which happen at the START of turn are allowed, I assume?)

Yes, except for the special rules these objectives work like normal 40K objectives and can be controlled during initial deployment or pre-game movement.

In Mission 1: Grot Hunt, can you choose to abandon a Captured Grot (thereby making it a Free Grot) by moving the unit with control over the Captured Grot more than 3" away from the spot where the Grot was captured? Can the capturing unit turn over control of the Captured Grot to another unit? If a unit cannot voluntarily move away from the Captured Grot, what happens if the controlling unit is moved away from the Captured Grot involuntarily, such as by having to Fall Back or Retreat more than 3" away, an opponents psychic puppet ability, etc?

Yes, other than the rules for Sneaking and Fleeing the Grot tokens operate like normal 40K objectives.

In Mission 2: Land Claim, the correct reading of the Bonus Scoring  section is the most of YOUR OWN tokens YOU placed (and if removed, placed once again) when compared to the number of your OPPONENTs tokens placed (and placed again) during the game, correct?  Also, the correct reading is the most of your OPPONENTS tokens YOU destroyed during the game vs. the number of YOUR OWN tokens THEY destroyed, right?

Correct, since you can only ever place your own tokens and destroy your opponents tokens the aggregate total of each action determines the award of the bonus points.

In Mission 3: Control Unit, IF (and only if) the Control Unit is able to be claimed PRIOR to turn 1 (if 1st question was answered 'no', then ignore this question. Otherwise...), could a unit with the ability to move before the game begins (such as vehicle with Vanguard which allows unit to move as-if it were the Movement Phase) move into contact with the Control Unit, move the Control Unit from the front of its model/base to the end closest to its' deployment zone and use any further move allowance/Advancing as-if it were the Movement Phase to move it up to the 9" allowed, and the drop it prior to the 1st turn movement phase? Could that unit, or another unit then move the Control unit up to the 9" allowed in the 1st turn Movement Phase in order to have effectively moved the Control Unit up to 18" away from the center of the board by the end of the 1st Turn Movement Phase?

To avoid such shenanigans, I have added "The Control Unit cannot be picked up prior to Turn 1" 🙂

In Mission 4: Quest for Glory, If you have tabled your opponent do you get the 'Gave up no Glory in back to back turns'  Bonus point, or do you need to keep one of your opponents models or units alive for however many turns it takes until the conditions are specifically met?

If you table your opponent the game would be over, so I suppose if you wanted to claim that bonus then you would need to keep them alive (although playing with your food like that could have an impact on your Sportsmanship score) 🙂

In Mission 5: Energy Siphon, How does a unit/model take control of an Energy Nexus, (since the Mission does not specify) by coming into contact, by being within 3", or by some other method? Can you please verify that once an Energy Nexus is Increased, it STAYS Increased for the rest of the game (scoring 2 points if Siphoned at the end of a player turn thereafter, unless it is Destroyed), and doesn't become un-Increased when points are scored from it?

An Energy Syphon is just a objective with special rules, so the standard 3" control applies. Once a nexus is upgraded it stays that way until destroyed. To clarify, I have changed the language slightly to "Syphoning an Increased Energy Nexus awards 2 points instead of 1 every turn"

To clarify on the Grot Hunt, do they not move at all if captured (unless a 1 is rolled)?

Correct...I have clarified the Mission to read:

    Rules for Grots:

    ·       Any Grot within 3" of a unit is considered Captured, any Grot not captured is considered Free

    ·       Sneaking - At the beginning of every movement phase, your opponent can move every Free Grot d6" in any direction

    ·       Fleeing - At the end of each players turn, that player rolls a d6 for each Captured Grot they control. On a 1, your opponent can move the Grot 2d6 in any direction.

    ·       Unless Sneaking or Fleeing, Grots do not move and cannot be moved by the capturing player

These look like fun, especially that first one! One possible typo on Mission 3: Control Unit - When the Control Unit pulses, it causes "S7 AP4 Hits". Should that be "S7 AP-4"?

    Oops...clearly my 7th edition is showing. 🙂

That will be changed to S7 AP -1

  12. Tragedy happens...as does drunkenness, so it always safe to have a few people around that can play if needed. 🙂

This is an open call for folks who are OFCC curious and would like a chance to play a game or two.

A few things about being a ringer:

    • There is no cost to being a ringer
      • One game or five, you are doing us a favor by playing
    • You may not play
      • We will have extra tables setup if ringers want to play pickup games
    • You can come Saturday, Sunday, or for the whole weekend
    • You need to have a fully painted 40K army
    • It is all about having fun!

If this sounds interesting, let us know!
