  1. I think I've actually seen someone do that 6mm Saga setup. Heck if I can remember where, though.

I have played Bolt Action and Chain of Command with 15mm. That actually works very well with standard 28mm measurements; the ground scale looks a lot closer to figure scale.

  2. Napoleonics, like Warhammer, are their own sub-hobby, really.

I'll second everything Ish has said, with one caveat: massed battles in Napoleonics tend to mean well in excess of 100 figures a side, even in 28mm. Black Powder, for example, defaults to a standard unit of about 24 infantry figures to give a 200-250mm frontage, and further assumes that each side fields around 8-12 units, and then that you've a table that can accommodate maneuver with that much lead on the table. (This is why I use 6mm for massed battle...) That said, Black Powder is also an extremely flexible rule set! They assume you'll be tinkering with the rules to fit your desired outcome and your own constraints. The only thing I try to avoid when I build units is the impression of a couple of men taking a flag for a walk...

If you want to dip into the period somewhere between hundreds and hundreds of figures and sharp skirmishes, I think you should look at Sharp Practice from Too Fat Lardies (40-60 to a side).

In any case, I've played some glorious games at this scale, both at Enfilade and at our local Ambuscade convention. (Enfilade is sadly canceled this year, thanks to COVID.) One standout is anything put on by Alyssa Faden.

I'm sticking with 6mm for massed battles, but if you decide to dip in at a smaller level, I'd be happy to paint up a few Prussians or some such and join in.

Charles V ruled the Holy Roman Empire at more or less it’s apex, covering pretty much the entirety of the European continent. Only the British isles, Scandinavia, Russia, and the Balkans weren’t part of it... and he had some minor territorial holdings in most of those regions too. .

  4. They're explicitly using it as a preorder system, not the usual deep KS discounts you might be used to seeing. One reason is so that people have a reason to get it through their FLGS instead of just getting it all cheap through KS...

I'm going to see if any local stores are willing to back it at the retail level, and go through them if possible. Otherwise, I'll... uh, either get a full army ($310) or two starters ($140) and start demoing.

I don't get why it costs so much more than battletech

Because people are willing to pay that price for GW models and IP.

How much would you pay for a MAD-7D Marauder model the same size and complexity as a Reaver Titan model? How much would you pay for a Reaver Titan figure on the same size as an Iron Wind Metals BattleMech figure?

Final point: The new starter set costs less than the Dark Imperium set for 40k. Is it of equivalent value? More? Less?

  6. I feel like they're trying very hard to diversify their income streams, with more success than they have in the past. Monsterpocalypse send to be doing well enough, and it's certainly offering a unique product compared to any other game on the market right now. I'm not sure where they're going with Riot Quest, but it's fun to play...

Warmachine 5k feels like it's going to have a much harder hill to climb. I have faith in PP's design abilities to creat a good game, but I don't know if they'll be able to back that up with production and marketing. They've had a lot of hiccups on that front over the last few years. And, as said, it's competing against Infinity, 40k, and Kill Team for that thematic space.

  7. Yes, though not as many as used to. Monday nights at Guardian are still a thing, though it's best to arrange a game ahead of time. Rune and Board in Hillsboro has a game night on Wednesdays, and Portland Game Store on Killingsworth has one on Thursdays. All three of those stores still carry a bit of Warmachine product.

I believe there's also a regular group that plays on Sundays at Geeks & Games in Oregon City.

Event-wise, there are also regular tournaments every month at PGS and/or R&B. Most of the chat is through a Discord server, which most anyone at a game night should be able to invite you to. We are also looking forward to a larger tournament at Burning Cat in April.

If you haven't played in ten years, be aware that we're now on the third edition of the game. IIRC, the new rulebook is available for download on the PP website, and new cards can be printed off their card database - or you can use War Room.

I've been poking around the internet, trying to learn more about De Bellis Antiquitatis. Currently in it's third edition, Amazon has the rulebook for under $20 USD. It's a historical game that's been around since the late Eighties and seems pretty interesting. One notable "selling point" to the game is that it only involves twelve "elements" in any given army, no more and no less. It's also usually played with 15 mm scale figures (although the rules can be easily adapted to 2 mm, 6 mm, 28 mm, or whatever else...) with multiple figures mounted onto standard sized bases. Consider this Third Crusade era army:

    968849411_e38dbc668e.jpg

The Knights (with lances) and the General (the knights with hand weapons) are mounted three riders to a base; the spearmen are mounted five to a base; the Swordsmen, up front, are five to a base; there are two groups of Archers three to a base... That's it. That's an entire army. Based on some very rough "back of the napkin" math and prices for 15 mm figures from places like Old Glory Miniatures, Essex Minitures, and so forth... I'm guessing that's maybe $40-50 USD. Give or take.

Scotia Grendel sells "DBA Army Kits" that contain complete armies designed for the system, all you gotta do is slap some paint on `em, average price is about £25.00... Roughly $30 in Imperialist Yankee Freedom Bucks.

And, of course, just as @Mack did with Command and Colors, it seems a fair few people enjoy playing DBA with simple blocks.

Having played quite a lot of DBA, I heartily recommend it as an intro to ancients wargaming. Despite playing with 12 stands to a side on a 2' square board, it manages to neatly capture the feel of a big battle with minimal rules. That said, it does take a bit of getting used to; the author, Phil Barker, always favors succinctness over clarity when writing rules...

  9. Two:

Nordlond Sagas for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG, a very Viking-flavored take on D&D 5th edition. Ends on October 12.

Less gaming, but no less geeky: Save Cameron's Books, a campaign to save a local bookstore that's being evicted from its current location in downtown (because the lease is up). If they don't find a new location, they'll have to close. I'm a fan of independent bookstores, so... Ends on November 7.

Okay, turns out we are staying off 94th and Stark.  Taking him out for birthday dinner about 4 or 5.  Haven't decided on where, yet.

Up in the air about coast tomorrow, yet.

Stark Street Pizza is a great old style pizza parlor. My favorite before I went low carb.

I've been thinking it's a compulsion. I find myself trying to answer questions I know that I lack the true answer for, but because a question is asked I MUST answer, for some reason. Weird to become aware of it and not be able to stop.

Is instinctual the same as compulsion (in this case)?

"I don't know," is always a valid answer. It's better than giving the wrong answer.
