  1. DAN! THIS! You HAVE to make custom scenario-specific upgrades. That is sheer genius! Let folks find artifacts/equipment/crazy powers during the adventure and carry them to the next game (if they choose to use the points on them).

Funny you guys should mention this, because we've already been working with those thoughts in mind before they were even mentioned here.  In the works is a custom scheme deck that has included a card for a central character to the narrative and some upgrades both for him and for others to purchase in certain scenarios!

And don't worry, narrative will still be a main focus, although not written by me because otherwise it would suck!

  2. Well from our experience around here, people don't change their rosters up much even those of us that have all models in the faction and multiple masters.  This is more due to wanting to be familiar with the models rather than constantly trying new things (although Mark is an exception, he seems to be doing different master and different models all the time, but I haven't found him doing so to be game-breaking).

Book keeping wise, it's a lot easier to go with fixed faction (ie I pick ressurectionists).  Opponents and tournament organizers then don't have to check lists to verify if they're legal, just got to make sure they're all from the right faction.

I mean yeah most people only have a small subset of models of which to pick from, not all have gone out and bought a whack of stuff, but in my experience (about 15 games or so all recently) the ability to swap masters game to game would require lots of games experience to make sure you're using each master efficiently.  And I'd argue anyone that has that many games under their belt will likely do very well even with a fixed master.

  3. With MaliIaux what are people's thoughts on pool sizes and whether we keep the single master focus.

Currently when i have been playing games I have been focusing on a single master for familiarity purposes even though I have every resser master.  I personally don't see open faction as much of an issue anymore with models having a lot more versatility (ie not as specialised to specific masters)

I am in the process of planning this year's Walpurgis and the topic of pool sizes has come up.

With 50ss being the new 35ss this makes the 45ss at last year about 65ss making a 55ss pool about 80ss of available models. And then how do we treat upgrades? Are the part of that pool?

If people are against open faction what about 2 master out of the same faction?

Any rate i am looking for feedback on what people would like to see on these regards.

  4. Go for it Dan. I believe we had 40 ish last year.

As for the sculptor that was part of the difficulty neither of us are happy with what we are accomplishing in a time frame appropriate for casting. Originally Ray was willing to cast but I haven't contacted him recently about it. I don't even want another Fate deck so I was at a loss for that. Enjoy my whole lot of nothing but empty ideas :)

What do you mean for this?  I think the major problem is more thinking of an idea for story encounters then having an idea of what kind of model would work good for that. I'm going to brain storm with Jamie Stockdale, Mark Handford and Todd McNeal (who will be doing the sculpting) and see if we can come up with some story encounters that would create the narrative that we've become accustomed to at Walpurgis and go from there.

  5. So I've approached a guy I know for art for cards and he's totally onboard, he was thinking old timey pinups of masters/minions... I think it's a fun and great idea so I've told him to run with it, my recommendation has been:

    Guild has: Lady J(k), Perdita(q), Miss Terious(j)?

    Ressurectionists: Kirai(k), Molly(q), Nurse(j)?

    Arcanists: Raspy(k), Collette(q), showgirl(j)

    Neverborn: Lillith(k), Pandora(q), Lelu(j)

Then jokers.... Misaki(red), Viktorias (maybe a twins pinup?)

What do they consider Wyrd IP?  Are you talking if we include scheme/strategy decks?  Or even having a deck with the suits of wyrd?

  6. hrm, now I've gotten the bug lol!  Damn you Jim! (although I admit I walked right into this one!).

I'm starting talking with a guy I know about art, if I get the suits and the facecards/jokers I imagine you're game to do layouts Jim?

I'll see if Todd up here would be willing to do some sculpting for the event, and hopefully Ray will drop in and volunteer to do casting for the stuff, otherwise I'll poke him in a day or two.

We'd be looking at a 30 person capacity again right?

  7. lol the distance thing would be the most difficult part, we're still going to run it out of the same shop?  If that logistic can be taken care of, and I can get the contact info of your sculptor (if he's still willing to come up with something for story encounters) I can spearhead figuring out the story encounters with Mark up here.  Then if Ray is still up for doing a bunch of casting for the sculpt (and also coordinate with getting the sculpted model), I'm game.

the distance thing is the major stumbling block (unless you guys are ok with us running it up here ;) ).

I can see if one of the local sculptor/painters around here wants to do that portion as well if yours isn't available.

I'll talk with someone I know about doing some art design for the back of the cards and some ideas about artwork for the JQK-jokers.

And I'm more than familiar with running events, just not one that's not been local lol.

  8. Oh and here's a fantastic hacky idea: what about using TWO larger base characters (e.g. 25mm) on the edge of a 20mm unit?  Any unit with an even multiple of 20mm couldn't touch the far character at all without failing to maximize (the near edge would fail to reach corner to corner).  Or is this blocked by the rules for odd base sizes?

Can't cantilever a character on the end of another character, if you want to have 2 larger based characters in a unit, they would have to be one on each end of the unit.

    Pg 98.

    There's No Room!

If a character cannot be placed within the unit, or beside the front rank, then he cannot attempt to join that unit.  This is obvious, perhaps, but worth saying nonetheless.

  9. charging player gets to decide within the scope of being able to make the movement as such (some obstacles can restrict where the charging unit can fit for example) and provided the charging player is still endeavoring to maximize the combat for both sides.

Far side for casters is still ideal as the player when maximizing will likely only get one model (thus 2 with the 2nd rank's attacks) into BtB with the caster increasing his survivability.

  10. I'm totally on board with Savion due to pg 99.

Whilst a character is part of a unit, both he and the unit (including any other characters that have joined that unit) are treated as a single combined unit for all rules purposes, save for the exceptions listed here.

Later in the same section under movement:

Similarly, if the character is subject to any movement restrictions, then those restrictions apply to the whole combined unit whilst the character remains a part of it, and vice versa.

Then the whammy of the movement restriction mentioned here:

A character can charge out of a unit, by declaring a charge in the relevant phase - in which case, he will move and his unit will stay still - it is not permitted to declare a charge of its own, though it can move during the remaining moves phase.

Since the restriction is to the unit, it then due to virtue of the paragraph above apply to the combined unit.  Therefore no other characters could declare charges (as they're restricted from doing so because the unit is restricted from doing so).

  11. I fully understand what you are saying.  However, the situation that arrises is that since the rest of them are still characters, and following the additional rule allowing a character to declare a charge out of a unit, you could declare a charge with more than one character.  There is nothing in the MRB which states only one character may declare a charge out of a unit.

I guess, the end result would be, that all but the last character would be able to declare a charge.  However, this could still be argued either way because:

    1) Yes, the character is still considered to be a unit

    2) Yes, the character still follows the rules for charging out of a unit

By your argument couldn't I declare a charge with the unit then declare charges with all my characters thus bypassing the restriction of a unit being able to declare a charge to begin with then?  I mean you get to move chargers afterwards in any order after declarations right?

I'll open a rulebook and come up with some references but I was always on the same page with Savion on this one.
