Hear Ye, Hear Ye and bear witness as another young son of Bretonnia ventures forth to claim favor of that most dear of Ladies. Head bowed, lance forsaken, he searches throughout this shattered realm, hoping against hope to find the Maiden for whom he quests and to sip from Her Gilded Chalice.

I'll be playing a game of 9th v 1.2 with Jake

Looking at what the tournament guys are saying on T9A forums, it looks like the meta for KoE might seriously change. The way the army list is constructed feeds itself naturally into a "gunline" of peasants with crossbows, a couple of trebs and then as close as possible to 65% of the armies value in two or three flying heroes on hippo/hippo/peg. The strategy that is forming is keep your points locked away in highly mobile, hard hitting lords and harass the enemy with massed ranged fire.
I'm not necessarily knocking this as a strategy, but it does seem a bit lame from a fun to play standpoint. Hopefully the larger picture of rebalancing/new rules will make this min/max list bs a poor choice.
-
The big change for my list (KoE) was that I had to drop my peasant crusaders and reliquary to fit the new (higher priced) unit entries into the 4500pt.
I don't really mind this, cause it'll let me build two separate list styles, cavalry and peasant revolt, but it does seem like a smaller battlefield in general.
New magic looks really cool though! And the war machine rules are a wonderful thing.
-
Nice! I'm really excited about the changes they've made, tbh I feel bad for the rules and balance teams, seems like they're catching a lot of flack before anyone has even tested the new stuff.
-
Yeahhhh I've been reading a lot of people being not terribly happy, but all of the nerfs were pretty universal and aimed at better balance so I'm cool with them. I think the best thing, especially about the new magic, is that the game is getting a lot closer to the point were they'll be able to actually have companies print high quality rule books and sell them in game stores without fear of GW lawyers.
I'm going to be playing at 4500 as that's what they're officially putting in the books as the recommend game size so we'll see how that goes. Barring anything crazy I expect that to be what the December tournament will be at.
Works for me, I'm always happy to not have to paint as many models haha.
Do you happen to know when the books will be put out? Midnight tonight? Or some time tomorrow?
-
You can still field those Halflings as Skirmishing Bowmen, they just won't have Quick to Fire or +1 BS like Brigards did, but they'll be cheaper at least! This thread is now the official let Kacy calm your 1.2 fears thread as I have access to the new books :P
That's good to hear, I'm also a little disappointed by the focus on RAF, but I get it, the pegs are unique to our army. I'm watching a thread on T9A about the new update and people seem livid, which I think is really the wrong way to go.
A lot of what I've seen looks really cool, I like the move away from templates, I'd always forget them at home anyway, and they really did nothing more than spawn argument. The new magic looks cool, and the fluff driven army book design is dope.
I'm excited to see the BH and KoE books get full updates, from what I've seen on the forums their fluff and background look sweet!
Is 4500 or 5000 gonna be our standard game size? What is the plan for the December tourney?
-
I've got a game of 9th with Alan, though idk what size you want to play at. The new recommendations are for 4500pt (2250pt in previous edition). I'd be up for either 4500 or 5000pt, I'd also be fine with playing 1.1 if you don't want to have to update our armies.
EDIT: I'm kinda disappointed by the KoE book in the new release, in general it seems fine, but no more brigands D: my halfling merry men don't have rules anymore
-
is it too late to hop on this bandwagon?
I'd like to play Britonnia if that's cool
-
I believe I have a 9th age game although I forgot with whom, I sincerely apologize to that spectacular individual who's name I forgot. What's everyone else up to?
I think that may have been with me... I offered to loan you an army, if not, my B, I have also forgotten the name of my opponent
-
I'll be playing 9th age, bretonnians against Sherbert's Orcs I believe.

this may be a silly question, but what should i expect for the structure of the tournament/time allotment/number of days etc. i've never done anything like this before, i'm excited but not at all sure about what i'm getting into. thanks

I would be interested as well, I've never done a tournament before, and it sounds fun!
-
Don, I think this is the most "liked" post I've seen in any of our Game Night threads so yeah, I'm pretty sure no one will mind :P
It sounds like I have a game with Gabe? The armies of the dead are marching into the dark forests looking for some wildling blood to feast upon!
dark gods lend us strength and extra neck armor to block those fangs!
-
that's what i figured, but i thought i should check with someone who actually knew what they were doing haha
-
weird rules question, can i field an army that is entirely ambushing? It seems like a bit of a gamble, because the hunting call will only work when the general is on the board, so there isn't a strong guarantee that anything will arrive, but tactically speaking, it's an interesting concept. I haven't seen anything saying I can't, though that's not saying much as I've only played one game of 9th age. if I were to keep the unit size down to 25, I could take wild horns, long horns, and raiders as well as dogs, giants, harpies, and briar beasts.
Addendum:
sample list, based on stuff I already have:
Heroes:
Centaur Chieftain: 245
-general

1. the beast lord cannot ambush, so i cannot make use of its almost guaranteed auto ambush, meaning that units are likely to not arrive when i would like them to arrive
2. this list has no heavy hitting characters, meaning that with the army's generally low leadership and lack of blenders, tactics will be paramount to success
3. no unit, apart from maybe the centaurs, is at a comfortable volume of bodies, even the relatively killy longhorns will struggle to last more than a few rounds of combat. again tactics will come into play.
From what I figure, this list could either be really really fun, or really really not fun, depending on the army matchup, and the quality of tactics employed.
basically I'm wondering if this sort of list is feasible, i toyed with the idea of bringing three giants, though decided not to in the sample list because I do not myself have three giants, and wanted to see if i could keep the list to just things i have in my army case.
-
I should be good for that. Also, would you mind bringing the BRB? I still wanted to get a headcount on another bound book order. I'll see about that now.
Awesome. A 6pm start would be ideal if you can make that. If we go a bit earlier we can spend some time on setup.
I can get there around 5 to set up and maybe get a burrito or something before we start playing, I'm gonna give the rules a good read tonight, but I expect I'll be getting a lot wrong on my first couple of games, so some time before hand to run through everything would be great. I've written up a 2500pt list that I believe is legal, though I'm not sure how many special units I can take, because in the pdf version of the rules I have, there isn't a min or max point cost specified for special units.
-
Yeah I noticed that, I like the idea of a drunken giant accidentally wondering into the flanks of the army after the battle has begun.
I am also wondering about razorgors. In 8th they seemed like a mandatory single model redirection unit. Are razortusks the same in 9th age? It doesn't seem like OnceBitten360 is using them, and from your list and the other beast herd lists I've seen online, they don't seem like a popular unit.
-
If you wanted to play against Jake, I'll be around to answer any questions you might have and also if you wanted to borrow any Beast Herds models, let me know.
That would be great! If Jake is up for it, and you're willing, I would really appreciate borrowing a gorgon and a cygor (or whatever they're called in 9th age). I want to get a feel for the models I have and work out what to get to round out the forces.
-
Excellent! Thank you for your advice, I've started watching OnceBitten360, and really enjoy it!
I was able to find a giant on eBay for cheep, I've always been fond of the giant and now that I finally have an army that can field one, I decided to get it, even though it might not be the best monster on the table. I'll try to track down a Gorgon or two.As far as ambushing goes, I know in previous editions, gors had a lot of trouble operating outside the ld bubble of the general. Likewise, without steadfast from being in a horde they wouldn't last too long in a prolonged fight. Is this still the case? From your list, I would assume not, but being a 9th age neophyte, there certainly might be some tactical aspect that I am missing.
-
I'm looking for a 9th age teaching game. I've played plenty of 8th, but would like to try 9th. I would also like to try out Beast Herds, which I have never played before. So I'm hoping there's a very patient player out there who would be willing to show me the ropes.
-
I just picked up a good collection of old Beastmen stuff off eBay yesterday and was realizing that save for a few 8th ed battle report videos on youtube, I have no idea what I'm doing with this army, especially with the new edition. I was wondering if one of you savvy fellas could help me work out a list from what I have and recommend what I should get to fill in the cracks. Advice on 9th age beast herd tactics would be much appreciated as well.
The auction was for:
85 gors
40 ungors5 orc boars (to convert into razorgors)4 beast lords/wargor3 doombulls38 beastigors17 minotaurs8 centigors2 chariots3 chaos spawn1 morghur master of skulls1 beastmen BSB wargorFrom what I've read about Beastmen, I'll want to get one or two monsters and a few more casters. Are ungors still best as msu chaff units? In the 9th age beast herds rules they have to be taken in squads of 10 at least, which seams like a problem for the whole msu tactic. Thanks for your help! Now that I'm back in town, I'll hopefully be able to come to Tuesday nights, I'm looking forward to learning how to play this new army, but I'm a little daunted and wondering how to start.- 4

We have a lot of new blood for 9th Age so you will not be out of place. I will be getting a game in with Jim next Tuesday night at Dark tower, you should swing by and check it out. I am very much looking forward to playing lots of 9th Age games in the future.
Id love to, but unfortunately i'm currently out of town, i'll be getting back at the end of the month though and plan on coming in to play

I've been invited to an election "party," so I wont be in the shop this week.
I'd like to play some 9th age next week though (the 15th), anyone up for a game?
