  1. simplifying rules and simplifying points is not the same thing. I love my DAK. They are my favorite army in FoW. The options available for those units now is staggering. How are they going to keep that same variance for balance? PP just doubled their point values for Warmachine and Hordes. They did it, so that they could have more flexibility for balancing units and options. All they did was double it. Battlefront is going the other way in a fairly extreme fashion.

My guess is that a lot of the "Any or All" options are going to be now just "All"

For instance, "Add an AA MG to any or all M14/41 for +5 points a piece" will now be "Add AA MG's to all M14/41's for +2 points" or something along those lines.  I don't know that we will lose all that much granularity.  Most of the major additions or subtractions to platoons are already worth 15 points or more, which can still be used in the 100 pt system.

For the Germans my guess is that Panzerknackers will be included in the cost of every platoon now.

  2. I don't think we have enough details to know what is going to happen with a Flames of War v4.  The fact of the matter is we know only three things:

    1. They are changing the points to 100 scale from 1500 scale

    2. We are getting a v4

    3. They are starting with a mid war update w/ new plastics

I for one remain optimistic.  Every time a new version of rules comes out there's a lot of skepticism, but Battlefront has had good rules in v1 of Flames, and it's only gotten better with each release.  Current trends point to v4 being another step up.  Honestly I can't think of any rules in Team Yankee that would not make Flames of War better for example:

    1. You can still hit things needing a 7.  You have to roll to hit on a six, and then reroll to hit on a 5+, similarly you can roll to hit on an 8, need to roll two sixes.

    2. Every gun has a Moving and stationary firing speed.  Makes for more depth as now you can have different guns fire at different rate of fire on the move instead of everything gets halved.

    3. Breakthrough Guns (called Brutal in TY) require infantry to reroll their successful saves instead of eliminating their saves altogether

    4. Artillery - You can call down artillery anywhere on the board, including smoke bombardments on your own troops in order to help them advance, or take cover

    5. Its much shorter, Team Yankee's rule book shortens down the rules from almost 300 pages in Flames of War, to around 40 pages for Team Yankee.  This is a huge relief to new players, as they can self-teach themselves instead of having to rely on other to show them the ropes.  I've had several people turned away from Flames of War because of the large complex rule set.

So overall I don't see anything in the Team Yankee rules that I dislike, and many things could really improve our current Flames of War rule set.  Team Yankee does not lose the tactical depth of Flames of War, but it does reduce the complexity that is a barrier to new players.  In short Team Yankee is easier to learn, harder to master.

Note:  I am also of the opinion that the change of how the points work is simply ridiculous, I seriously hope they change their minds on this point.

  3. We have some pretty tough customers locally, and we used to count Eric Riha and Bill Wilcox as regulars until they moved away (arguably the best in the world when they were in CA). We get a good mix of all types, from the hyper competitive (TEXANS), to the happy go lucky cooler full of beer types (me).

All Masters really means to me is that you've got the perfect set up where you make tons of money, have tons of vacation time to travel, and tons of free time to build, paint, and play. If I had any one of those I'm sure I'd be a masters player too. The first time they did Masters it was all expenses paid, and boy did they pay from what Riha told me. They toned that down pretty quick, I think it's just room and board now.

Kublacon is cool, and SF is awesome. I'm probably going to go, but May is already going to be super busy. Like I've said, we need more people to show, but the distances on the West Coast are so much greater than the East Coast so numbers are generally lower than events like Gencon and Historicon, and the BF reps NEVER understand that. I don't think it will be moved from Kublacon, so sorry about that. Someone in the PNW would have to make a pretty convincing argument to BF to move it. I'd definitely go if it were moved to Portland.

Honestly Kublacon is going to be the best location on the west coast to have the west coast nationals.  Its just a shame that Kublacon and Enfilade fall on the same weekend every year, since that's probably our largest Flames of War event in the PNW for the year.

  4. But not an all expenses paid ticket i imagine.  Lol.  Think i got a shot at it?

No not all expenses paid, but they usually provide room and board.  Honestly I don't think I've ever played you, so I couldn't say.  I have had the privilege of playing some of these "masters level" players, and they aren't Gods among men lol.  They are extremely sharp though and have been some of my most difficult games.  If you enjoy the fierce competition, then West Coast Nationals is definitely up your alley.

I would certainly be cheering on you, or anyone else from the PNW at West Coast Nationals.  It would be great for one of us to represent WA/OR in the masters.  Right now Indiana, Ohio, and PA players make up 60-70% of the masters players, the rest hail from Texas, so it would be great to see some diversity.

Edit:  Ok so I overexagerted a little about the lack of diversity, but it still is really lopsided right now, and no representation from the West Coast.  Here's the 2015 master's players profile page http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=57&art_id=5000&kb_cat_id=63

  5. I should go win that thing.  I wonder if my sister lives close enough to that?  I always want to go down there and see her.  Just need the right excuse...

Winning West Coast Nationals earns you an automatic invitation to the North American Masters tournament.

  6. I recently visited The Panzer Depot and its pretty cramped in there for an event.  They have about 4 or 5 tables, and plenty of terrain.  Also there are 4 or so regular Flames of War gamers up there, but they don't get on the forums much from what I was told.  The owner of the store pretty much thought Flames of War Tournaments were dead, and I informed him otherwise :).

NO A/C though, so avoid Summer events.
