barca
This is a PROPOSED - TENTATIVE - Calendar of Flames-of-War events, for the Northern Oregon/Southern Washington region,as proposed by 'barca' and the Rose City Dukes and Duchesses FoW group. This proposal should be discussed at Northwest Invasion 2016 and TANKS-giving (PDX) 2016, and finalized before Black Thursday (so that people can plan their Holiday Shopping Lists). We might also change some events to reflect the Battlefront Release Schedule and the desires of our group. (EDIT) We are planning on: 1) leveraging what people have (especially stuff that has never been, or rarely been on the table), and 2) also having events for the "new, shiny" stuff that has come out recently, and 3) some events for product that is being released in late 2016 and in 2017. For ideas and suggestions, look here. Since this is tentative, bring your desires and suggestions to this thread, or discussions, or both.Note that we might not participate in all NHMGS events, but they are listed here as opportunities. After Thanksgiving, and after Battlefront announces their Tournament points, a week-by week calendar with more details (and links to forum threads) will be posted and pinned in the forum.Year || Month || part || Event || Location2016 || October || Late || ||2016 || October || 29th || Northwest Invasion 2016 || OCC, Lacey, WA2016 || November || Early || TANKS-giving prep ||2016 || November || 12th || TANKS-giving 2016 || GG, Portland, OR2016 || November || Late || Battle of the Bulge kick-off ||2016 || December || 3rd || Ambuscade! barca
Schedule and locations One thing to consider, at least for the PDX/GG group, is scheduling for recurring events. For example, 1) Should we continue with JUST the THU night weekly schedule for both FoW and Team Yankee events, or 2) Keep THU for WWII/FoW, and have an additional reservation for Team Yankee, perhaps on 1-4 Saturdays a month. 3) Create a separate reservation for FoW campaign and league events so as to leave the Thursday slot for open/casual gaming. 4) Some other suggestions. I have the sense that TY will develop a regular following, and deserves its own time slot. Some gamers might want FoW/WWII, but not do TY. Some gamers might want BOTH FoW/WWII AND TY. Some gamers might want TY, but not want FoW/WWII Also, the THU time slot is tough for some people who have to fight the traffic to get to GG. So there is another reason to have a weekend reservation at a location where we can count on the space. If someone wants to sponsor a weekday reservation at a location other than GG, please step forward. If someone wants to assist me in setting up a reservation at their FLGS, and has a short list of committed participants (2 or more), then help me in setting it up. After that, I can run the campaign/league/game night (see below for my availability). For myself, this is what I can run or participate in: Weekly: One weekday evening at GG (usually THU) Weekly: One weekend event (2-4 per month) at GG or another venue within 30 miles of PDX. Monthly: One all-day event on SAT or SUN (tournament, mega-battle, or demo) Another item to review is location. We could rotate games between several game stores (and/or non-retail venues), but to do that, we need table space and terrain for locations other than GG. Personally, my opinion is that since GG is carrying the FoW (new stuff, at least) and TY product, I want one of the recurring sessions (at least once a month) to be @ GG. ZeroMoon17
I recently visited The Panzer Depot and its pretty cramped in there for an event. They have about 4 or 5 tables, and plenty of terrain. Also there are 4 or so regular Flames of War gamers up there, but they don't get on the forums much from what I was told. The owner of the store pretty much thought Flames of War Tournaments were dead, and I informed him otherwise :). NO A/C though, so avoid Summer events. barca
Before revising the schedule, I will wait for the OFFICIAL Battlefront announcement on the planned 2017 releases. Here are some principles I would like to apply to the schedule: 1. Have fun and socialize with other like-minded gamers. 2. Get the current players involved more often. 3. Draw in new players. 4. Bring back lapsed players. 5. Get more exposure: go to more FLGS, more demos, promo online, bring FoW and TY to non-FoW events. 6. Share the fun and excitement of our hobby. 7. Have EW and LW events with v.3 rules. 8. Give the v.4 rules a good start and have several v.4 MW events 9. Grow TY (Team Yankee) to have a regular core group. 10. Support our FLGS: GG, PD and OCC 11. Develop closer connections to stores and groups beyond GG, TPD and OCC (GG=Guardian Games, TPD=The Panzer Depot, OCC=(Gabi's) Olympic Cards & Comics)) 12. Put on demos of new and rebooted product lines and gauge the interest. 13. Help retail FLGS staff learn about the games and put them in a position to speak confidently about the games. 14. Try different formats for tournament and non-tournament events: chosen doubles (you form your team) random doubles (team member assigned at random) Lend-Lease (historical match-ups, specialized units and rules) Core units only (combat and weapons, no support) Flames goes to the movies Attrition mini-campaign: half of what you lose in battle 1 cannot be brought to battle #2 Mega-battle or one-day campaign BTW, Anthony has mentioned that he can get a venue for a two-day or weekend event. I would help with setting up such an event, but with my commitments, I would not be running it. My max participation for one event is 1.5 days (36 hours): one afternoon, and overnight stay (if not local), and plus one full day, not 48hrs. barca
My plan for the schedule is to be flexible and responsive, while also allowing people to plan their purchases, do army building and make commitments to events. Every 3 months, update the calendar with firm dates and details, publish and distribute cards and flyers, post online. Timing: late NOV/ Early December - Firm Schedule for JAN-MAR, tentative schedule for rest of year February: Firm Schedule for APR-JUN, tentative schedule for rest of year MAY (before Enfilade!): Firm Schedule for JUL-SEP, tentative schedule for rest of year AUG: Firm Schedule for OCT-DEC, tentative schedule for 2018
Corky272
I have two questions: 1) My bread & butter list is the 291st Engineers from DC. I love Bulge events. Are there any plans to have a one-day mega battle or something along that line for those of us folks out of area to join in? Or, possibly, do you have an online forum or such that folks from Eastern WA/N Idaho & the Lacey area can compete along with you during the campaign? 2) Besides Tac Sol, is there any planning/brainstorming/buzz on trying to be more inclusive/competitive with the PNW? I still need to make contact with the MT group, but would there be interest in an interstate convention/state-team competition?
Noland
I like the idea of a campaign that can be played remotely by people. Stellar idea.
taran.shannara
for item #2, this is/was the idea of having FoW at OFCC. It works for the other game systems. barca
I agree. The timing, size of the venue and sheer number of gamers in one place makes the OFCC event a great candidate for Eastern Oregon, Idaho and MT gamers to gather in one place, with western Oregon and Washington gamers, be they FoW, 40k, AoS, or other game systems.
