FIRESTORM: ARDENNES, Turn 2

“At about this time Peiper received further orders to move through Hullscheid and on to Lanzerath, a change brought about by the 12th VG’s inability to break through American lines at Losheimergraben. It was during this detour that the kampfgruppe received its first casualties, as described by Obersturmfuehrer Werner Sternebeck:
‘Immediately west of Losheim the first Panzer V [Panther] drove into a minefield and was lost for the rest of the Operation. After the engineers removed the mines, the advance was cautiously continued. In the meantime, the sun had set. …There was another explosion and a second Panzer V drove into a minefield, approximately 500 meters west of Losheim. Again, the mines had to be found and removed. This took a lot of time. Our two panthers, which were thought of as battering rams, were lost for the rest of the deployment, without having made any contact with the enemy.’ “ (1)

In the sector of the 304th Infantry Regiment, 99th ID, 2nd Infantry Division’s Commander sent 1st BN, 23rd Inf Rgt to reinforce the area south and SE of Huenningen (2). “At 1600, the enemy made his first definite assault, preceded by six minutes of furious shelling. When the artillery ceased, German infantry were seen coming forward through a neck of woods pointing to the southeastern edge of Huenningen. A forward observer with Company B, facing the woods, climbed into the church steeple and brought down shellfire which kept pace with the attackers until they were within a hundred yards of American foxholes…The (German) commander of the 27th Regiment sent forward ‘seven distinct attacking waves’ … At no time, despite numerous penetrations in the 1st Battalion line, was the enemy able to get Huenningen into his hands.”(3)

From the time that you claim a battle, you have 7 days to complete the battle and submit a battle report. If no report is received by the end of day 7, then the battle goes back into the queue, and any other commander can claim it.
Any battle not reported by the end of turn is diced off in The Generals’ Battle.

I was there for D-Day...waiting on the hill.  blasting away.  It brought home how truly difficult that operation was for the Allies.  In our recreation of D-Day I felt the allies were too tentative in the early going which hurt them because getting pinned after moving 6 inches instead of 12 blocked the people from behind them from advancing even when they survived the shells.  When my Motorized Rocket battery finally was able to get into position, it was a party, in conjunction with an 88 battery firing barrages and of course my trusty 105's.

Trained Troops storming the beaches were shelled, shelled and shelled agan while under intense HMG fire.  Bpoli7 ran that if I recall?  It was pretty cool.  he even had the boats for coming on shore.

Peiper got an overdose of Jackson. It's bad enough when ONE Stonewall Jackson makes his appearance on the defender's side of the battlefield, but 4 Jackson's is unhealthy for Panthers. Then the Truscott Trott infantry acting like Jackson's "foot-cavalry" was just too much..."
