  1. For serious.  I hate painting.  I love painted armies, but it's a chore I do like cleaning gutters or patching holes in my driveway.

One thing that's cool to me about this genre of games is that there are so many different reasons people like to play them.  I personally enjoy the heck out of army design, painting, and playing.  To a lesser extent conversions can be fun too, but mostly I like to tweak models I like into models I love very subtly (see my scratch built 5 part lance that I built for my Bret lord).  I dislike assembly but at least the plastics have gotten better and I don't have to scrape/file as many mold lines as back in the day.

I personally am to the point where I almost don't want to play someone unless his/her army is fully painted to a decent quality, because to me the games themselves are pretty darn weak if you take out the visual element.  Unpainted models or primer black (ugh) just ruins the visual for me.  40k is such a badly designed game (as was WFB!) in general that it's hard for me to imagine wanting to play just for the game's sake, but I know other perfectly intelligent people disagree ;)  Malifaux has proven to be so good rules-wise that I enjoy the hell out of a game even with unpainted minis, but the game looks SO much better with all painted figs on the table, wow!

Anyway nobody asked me but that's kinda my take.  And I'm really glad like I said that so many people find things that draw them, or we wouldn't have awesome guys like fluger (everybody's favorite, I know!) at our tournaments :)

  2. So I'm a long time fantasy fig painter, but never really cared to do vehicles or large 40k-like things, just didn't find it fun.

But I'm getting ready to paint some for playing and so I was hoping for some tips and pointers from all you armor-painting pros!

Assuming I'm airbrushing the base color on, what then is fastest/easiest way to get clean lines of "dark" in the seams of armor, like these:

    Tau painting closeup

What are the steps you use to get those seams and edge-of-seam highlights done?

    Thanks so much!!

  3. Pretty much initiative cheats are the bomb.

Personally (and maybe I'm just being sour grapes) but I think that Init is a mechanic that should have been left alone, just to keep players honest.  When you can out-activate and go in, do a bunch of damage, and then auto-win initiative (for all intents) and go AGAIN, it's kinda dumb.  So far it's the only mechanic I find obnoxious in the whole game, is cheating init.  But I'll live with it because the rest of the game is SO GOOD!! :)

  4. Pax just FYI this isn't unique to Perdita and in fact can be done more directly with other masters.  For example, Zoraida has her Obey suit built in on a Ca7, and a very good Terrifying model in Juju.  Or heck, Pandora can trigger Paralyze on her attack with just a Crow (using a SS or cheating one in), and she can target your master with it (unlike Obey which cannot).

So it doesn't change a whole lot regarding the threat landscape, it's just a tool in Perdita's box that I hadn't really realized before (and in the right situation is very powerful).

  5. Wyrd's having a Black Friday promotion with lots of pre-release models available.  If you order $300 of stuff (not too hard if you don't play just Guild, as there are a lot of pre-releases for other factions!) you can get a free LE Alternate McMourning model (along with several others).

Is anyone interested in ordering $300 worth of stuff and then selling me the Female McMourning model?  I'd gladly pay $20, more if you really must ;)  Think of it as $20 off your order!  Let me know, and thanks :)

  6. Nasty... with the Emissary nearby (Aura(8) I think) Perdita is getting to Obey with built in suit on a Ca7.

So now the question becomes: what are some good models she can hire with Terrifying?  Her own models (Executioner, Peacekeeper vs. Living; Lone Marshall vs. Undead) are okay, but I'd have to guess whether my opponent is playing mostly Living or Undead models.  Versus some factions that'd be okay.  A few merc models come to mind such as Killjoy (so expensive!), Ama No Zako (only Terrifying(Living)), Wrath from Shifting Loyalties (haven't looked at him much but maybe?)... nothing really jumps right out as a great option outside of Peacekeeper vs. Living crews and Lone Marshall vs. Ressers.

Oh and a side note: do I correctly remember reading somewhere that the obeyed model is considered friendly to the obey-source model?  I know the obeyed model is still friendly to its own crew, and enemy to the enemy crew, but I thought somehow that the particular obey-source model was considered friendly for that Obey action. Or is that only on abilities where it's specifically printed (e.g. Ama No Zako's Promising Whisper)?  If Perdita herself is considered an enemy model still, it allows me to do my Df trigger Quick Draw, to deal damage without the enemy getting to use a Df trigger itself :)

    Word!

  7. I was thinking about ways to utilize the Obey boost Perdita gets from her Emissary, and I was thinking: is there any reason I can't obey an enemy model who hasn't activated yet to cause it to attack my terrifying model (e.g. Peacekeeper) and then flip or cheat to fail the Terror test, causing it to be paralyzed for its activation?  Not sure why this wouldn't work, seems like it would, but it's also super powerful so I'm making sure I'm not missing anything.

    Thanks,
    NtK

  8. Oh wow your guys look awesome!!!

I had a Tau army back when I picked up 40k, but I never got around to painting it partly because I could never pick a color scheme!  The traditional Tau ochre has always looked great to me, but then again I really like the striking look of the new white.  Or a mix.  Or the sage green of the stealth suits... haha!

  9. Thanks again for the pointers!  Now that I know that the Opt. Stealth Cadre can still get Coordinated Fire I'm definitely not as motivated to get three Ghostkeels in.  And with the points back from the 3rd Ghostkeel, it was easy to upgrade a bunch of guys; in fact I may be wasting point on giving all the GKTs Hammers, but... yeah let me know what you think, and thanks in advance :)

    Hunter Cadre:

1 Iridium Commander w/ C&C Node, Drone Controller, Stim, PEN, MSSS (all the goodies!), plus 2 marker drones

5 Firewarriors w/ Missile Pod Turret

5 Firewarriors w/ Missile Pod Turret

5 Firewarriors w/ Missile Pod Turret

1 Riptide w/ Ion Accelerator, Early Warning Override (EWO)

    4 Marker Drones

1 Stormsurge w/ Pulse Driver Cannon, Airbursting Frag Proj, Advanced Targeting System, and EWO

    Optimized Stealth Cadre:

3 Stealth Suits w/ Burst Cannons

3 Stealth Suits w/ Burst Cannons

2 Ghostkeels w/ Cyclic Ion Raker, TL Burst Cannon (1 w/ Target Lock)

    Allied Detachment - Grey Knights:

1 Librarian w/ Nemesis Warding Stave (Question: would it be worth making this guy lvl3 and giving him the Liber Daemonica, for 50 pts (!!) or do I not have enough Psyker units to make that worthwhile?)

    5 Grey Knight Terminators w/ Daemonhammers (1 w/ Psycannon)

1 Nemesis Dreadknight w/ Teleporter, Greatsword, Incinerator, Psycannon (giving me a little Rending for 2+ AS?)

Total 1998 points... feels to me like a lot of Wargear esp on the Grey Knights, but it'll make them more effective which is nice because I like the models!  Obviously if I were just going for the toughest list possible I'd yank out the GKs and get another entire Opt Stealth Cadre, but given the desire to have GK allies, is there anything else you'd suggest changing??

    Thanks,
    NtK

  10. If Coordinated Fire lets you share rules, you want a Multispectrum Sensor and Puretide Chip. If it doesn't, I would say drop the CCN and go with a pair of Missile Pods, a Target Lock, and the Puretide Chip (and Controller/Iridium, obviously.)

Oh shoot I didn't realize this was also under debate... I thought that the fact that they fire as one unit meant the abilities are spread to everyone, and that the question was whether models with Target Lock, and/or GCs, could shoot at a different target and still get any Coordinated Fire benefits.  To me the TL guys obviously would not get it, but the GC is a better question, presuming the Stormsurge fires at least one weapon at the CF target.

I don't care how it pans out I'd just like to know so I can design my army around the right rules.  Shoot!

  11. I'm looking for a ram skull and not finding much.  I have the steer skull from the malifaux ghost town bits blister.  I was thinking beastmen would be a good source, too.  I'll scan through the GW store today and see if I can find something with the right curve and texture on the horns... I could just take the horns and put them on a different skull, if needed.

  12. I like it!  I would definitely give the Commander the extra equipment, as he gives the abilities to the whole damn Coordinated Fire team.  And I'm personally running the Burst Cannons on the Ghostkeels instead of the Fusion, so that they can try to stay outside 12" for their double cover save... figure they're shooting rear armor anyway so the Cannons should work.  All theory-hammer though, I have zero actual experience so I'm pretty sure you can ignore me safely :)

It's kinda scary how similar all our Tau armies are looking!  Hunter Cadre w/ min Firewarriors, Markers, 1-2 Riptide(s) and Stormsurge + Optimized Stealth Cadre w/ 2 Ghostkeel + Buffmander.  At least my stupid Grey Knight allies will differentiate my army from yours by making it suckier ;)

    What color scheme you thinking?

  13. Just wondering if anyone has found a good proxy based on the picture?  I've thought there should be a Guild Marshal style casket due to "Back in the Box!".  And a six-gun obviously.  I'm almost thinking just doing a head-swap on the Guild Marshal that is down with his cloak out, and putting him on top of a cage of some kind to raise his height.

What are you all considering, if (like me) you don't want to wait for the model's release?

    Thanks!

  14. I'm curious whether Guild McM can hire Emissary of Fate (I don't see any way he can, but maybe I'm missing something)?

Also, since there's no upgrade for Guild McMourning-led Brutal Emissary, does he just use Brutal Conflux?  The Resser McM has a specific upgrade for his Emissary of Fate, so it seems odd that they left Guild McM out, in a way?

    Hmm, I'm confuzzled.
