    Barca,

I don't think I agree that a pinned unit is a moving unit.

I am not trying to argue that Pinned = Moving. There are situations where they have different effects.

What I am trying to say is that the EFFECTS of pinned on shooting, and the EFFECTS of moving on shooting can have the same outcome.

To address this in a different way, I think that the effects (on shooting) of being pinned and the effects of moving have more to do with time and the focused attention of the shooter to line up a well-aimed shot.

In the case of movement, time is the primary factor. Part of your turn (time) is moving and the other part (time) is shooting. To show that LESS time is used to locate the target and setup a well-aimed shot, or to fire more than one shot, there are two ways to approach this:

    • a. Reduce ROF for moving
    • b. Penalty in the To-Hit score.

When the Stationary ROF is already 1, then your choices are:

    • Set the Moving ROF to zero, or
    • Set Moving ROF also to 1 AND add mechanism "b"

In the case of pinned, you could argue that either time or focus (or both) could affect the ability of the of the shooter to line up a well-aimed shot.

    • c. Time: part of the turn is taken up with dodging incoming enemy fire, or working up the nerve to stick your head up to shoot.
    • d. Focus: shooting at a target when you are NOT being shot at allows you better focus to find your target and perhaps waiting a bit to take your best shot (time and/or focus). Shooting at a target when you ARE being shot at rattles your nerves and/or makes you hurry to take a less-than-optimal shot

Additionally, going from version 3 to version 4, a lot of special rules were streamlined. So equating "Pinned ROF" to "Moving ROF" was taken as a simple way of applying a general rule to most cases, instead of writing PINNED ROF as a separate statement in many places.

Now, I am not on the staff at Battlefront, so I do not know if their discussions are anything like the one I described above.

I didn't see Phil's email that he takes these questions on but if anyone knows please chime in.

    1. I could be wrong. You are free to disagree. The logical reasoning is not as clear as it could be in either the rules or in the LFTF.

    2. As for e-mail, I think that might not get a response. Battlefront has been pushing a lot of Gamer-staff interaction to their Facebook Page. If you can log in to facebook and tag the posting to notify you when there are comments to what you posted, then that might get some discussion or even an answer. If you cannot set a notification, then you might have to scroll through lots of other stuff to find your posting and its comments.

    3. I don't yet have a FB page, otherwise I would ask the question myself. It seems to be murky and yet important.

  4. This is my target for enfilade, but it is negotiable up until JAN 1, 2020 (1):

3 rounds, 2.5 hours, 100 points (2), LATE-WAR, Theme D-DAY, D-Day Books, latest edition of the v4 Rulebook, fully painted armies (decals optional), bases must at least be painted, but flocking is desired. No Soviet Forces.

Before you jump and comment on ENFILADE, read on about the tournament that comes 6 weeks before ENFILADE 2020:

    • On Saturday, April 11th, 2020, RCDD will host Dogs-of-War 2020 (3), in Portland OR. That format will be similar to ENFILADE 2020, with a few changes:

Armies SHOULD be fully painted, but models and bases must be WYSIWYG - no proxy models. At least base-coat the figures and models, please

This is a De-escalation Tournament. You play in shorter rounds with fewer points (2) for each successive mission. 3 army lists: 115, 100 and 85 points.

    • #1 is the base list, at 115 points. This is the list I will review and approve.
    • List 2 will be list #1 minus 15 points, (100 pts) and must be legal - not reviewed by me, unless your opponent objects
    • List 3 will be list #2 minus 15 points, (85 pts) and must be legal - not reviewed by me
    • You will have paper copies of your list at registration time, legible (typed not required if it is legible), that you provide to each opponent, plus one for the GM.

Each round after Round 1 decreases by 15 min:

    • Round 1: 2h, 45 min, 115 pts (list #1), Mission chosen via Battle Plan (4).
    • Round 2: 2h, 30 min, 100 pts (list #2), Mission chosen via Battle Plan.
    • Round 3: 2h, 15 min, 85 pts (list #3), Mission for everyone is "Free-For-All" - no reserves, no ambush, Meeting Engagement.

The objectives of this Dogs-of-War FoW Tournament are:

    • Play MORE GAMES!
    • Focus on LOCAL players (SW Wash, NW Oregon) and a smaller tournament (12-14 gamers).
    • Practice with the Force you will likely use at ENFILADE
    • Allow you to experiment with support options before ENFILADE
    • Focus on the core 85 pts of your force
    • Challenge you to play faster with each mission.
    • Give you an incentive to have a fully painted army before ENFILADE

    NOTES:

    (1) Soon after 1 JAN is when I will have my entry ready to submit to the NHMGS Enfilade organizers.

    (2) Points levels are a total of BOTH units and command cards.

    (3) There is an Ordo Forum post for DoW 2020, which I will update soon.

    (4) Since we are using the Battle Plan method, I will NOT be considering Force Type for match ups. Your force should have a plan to defeat whatever your opponent could throw at it. My advice is for you to find a Combined Arms mix you can work with.

  5. 14 hours ago, Noland said:

James, what are you leaning to for points so we can start running some test matches up here?

No official announcement  from Battlefront on points levels for the 2020 tournament season, but here are my planning parameters:

    • For FOW v4, I am leaning toward 110 points for Late War, 3 rounds, 2h15m per round
    • Team Yankee (at ENFILADE 2020) is a one-round event, doubles at 120 pts per team, approx 60 points per player.
  6. Although this specific case is not called out in the LFTF or updates to the rule book, the LFTF does provide some clarity:

SITUATION: Bazooka Team is pinned down, but did not move.

    QUESTION: Does it

    1. shoot with ROF 1 and its unmodified to-hit number, or
    2. does the Slow-Firing rule apply? And therefore, the score to hit = (to-hit number) plus 1 (for slow-firing).

ANSWER: Number 2. Here is why (emphasis is not in the original):

See page 2 in "LESSONS FROM THE FRONT: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON FLAMES OF WAR, October 2019"
    SHOOTING
Why does a heavy Gun team like an
8.8cm AA gun have a Moving ROF of
1 when it doesn’t have a Tactical speed?
When it is Pinned Down it shoots using
    its Moving ROF rating,
    getting only one
shot. Likewise, at the start of a Meeting
Engagement, if the 8.8cm gun belongs to
the first player, it will shoot as moving,
i.e. using its Moving ROF, so it will get
one shot in this case as well.

Since the Slow-firing rule affects a "moving" unit, and a pinned unit uses it moving ROF, then the bazooka team that is pinned uses its moving ROF, which includes the Slow-firing penalty.

  7. To add to this,

    • You roll at the start of each turn, like getting air support.
    • Assault Boat Company gets the NGS (Naval Gunfire Support) on 4+
    • Rifle co gets the NGS on 5+
    • NGS is classified as "Artillery"
    • NGS does NOT hit bunkers, minefields nor barbed wire. It can hit gun pits and troops.
    • Teams hit by NGS get their saving roll, but if they fail that, firepower is AUTO.

In missions where there is a preliminary bombardment, that rule is like 1 turn of NGS that is done after setup and before the first turn. Preliminary bombardment does not occur a second time, and has nothing to do with the use of the NGS card.

Thanks for the Game Barca. German panzer 4's VS american tank co. . The game started  good for the germans then they chocked, but then rallied in round 5 and killed 9 American tanks. surprising German victory.

My opinion is that in late-war, a combined arms force with a PZ IV tanks can work, so long as the commander has a good grasp of combined arms tactics.

A pz IV formation with only tanks is prob doomed in late-war, unless 3 or more tigers get to assault an objective.

    What are "barca's Immersion Games"?
Each month, we will find a quiet place to explore new games and "immerse" ourselves in a virtual world via an engaging game. You might join the crew of a pirate ship and act out a role like in "Pirates of the Caribbean". You could dive into a pulp fiction adventure like an "Indiana Jones" movie. You could be trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. You might be carving out an empire by conquest or building a nation.
Whether the game is new to you, or old and familiar, you will be challenged by the cooperation or the competition. You could meet new people, or you can bring your friends along to share the adventure.

We are planning on meeting on the third Saturday of each month at Guardian Games in Portland, OR. Most sessions will start at noon and end 3-4 hours later. Some longer games will require that we start earlier and end later.  We will try to rent the Dungeon room to have that quiet space. The rental fee is $5.00 per hour, so we will be expecting each player to pay a $5.00 so that we can collectively cover the room rental.
The event will be posted on the store calendar at https://ggportland.com/calendar/ .  You can sign up on our meetup group at https://www.meetup.com/Rose-City-Dukes-and-Duchesses-Tabletop-Wargaming-Group to get up-to-date information and a reminder for the event.

Changing the D-Day Beach mission from "FUBAR" to "Help is On Its Way".

We playtested the FUBAR mission a second time, and event with adjustments, it is not suitable for new players. Is it a long, slow slog for hardened Gorgnards.

The mission "Help is On Its Way" should play faster and be more dynamic for both sides.
