denying D Psychic powers in apoc?

Okay, so in apocalypse games, some formations/units have D (destroyer) strength psychic powers. Is the roll to deny still allowed for them, as it takes place before the D effect, or is the deny considered a save that the D weapon denies.

I say Deny works.

Deny works an all hostile powers that target a unit, including maledictions that don't cause wounds. It's not a saving throw IMO.

What psychic power has a D effect?

A bunch of them. In apocaypse you can form units of multiple HQ psykers and you get a special psychic power that they can stack their warp charges into for a D effect. The funny bit is that they have a much harsher perils, including one that pops the psykers and grants a free greater daemon to the opponent in their position....

For specifics,

Apoc book pg99, Librarius Formation

Requires 5x IC psykers from SM books (GK included, but not INQ). They form one unit they can't leave and in exchange gain a warp charge 4 power that's a 24" S:D Large blast Vortex witchfire power.

Apoc book pg 125, Thousand Sons War Coven (no actual MoT requirement...)

Requires Ahriman or a level 3 sorcerer, plus 3+ level 1 sorcerers. They form one unit in exchange for a warp charge 2 power with 48" of range that is S:D ap1 assault "X" and has small blast and vortex. The Assault "x" is that you must sacrifice lvl 1 psykers for each shot...up to 3x per shot. I love this one..so perfect for CSM...

Just those two in the main apoc book. Eldar and IG have psyker formations too, but neither is a D weapon. Cool thing about the current apoc book is that the formations don't cost extra points. They just get free apoc bonuses for fielding that model combination.

Initially, on paper, these look pretty cheap for D weapons, but upon closer inspection, it's like ~300pts for the bare bones SM one that only has 24" of range, so you'll likely increase that cost to get them in range (remember, they form a unit, so they can't join a unit like normal ICs, so you can't get them a pod, so looking at TDA all around, a LR or a SR), which bumps them pretty close to the cost of a super heavy with a D weapon (around 500pts).

The CSM one is pretty cheap and doesn't need a transport, but they also have to burn a 65pt model per shot and only have the small blast. That one will still run around 300pts for the base unit.

Plus, both still lack durability against D weapons themselves, so I'd expect to fire once and then die horribly...

3++ Just ran a BatRep with the Librarius Formation. They sat in a Void Shielded Bunker and did nothing, as 24" with limited arcs of fire isn't actually very much of a threat area on an Apoc table.

Idiots....

I've been building a unit for it, but every model is in TDA so we can deep strike into position. 24" shouldn't be sitting in a bunker waiting for the enemy to come to them. It needs to be aggressive.

A storm raven is also a very viable option.

They included the Warlord and there was some Victory Condition that made them worth a ton of points, so it made sense to hide. They almost lost the Game because of the Bunker finally getting breached.

Ah, that makes more sense. Still, not a great way to evaluate the formation...
