We have seat and nations for 8 people.

If fewer than 8 show up, we will assign countries in grouping that make sense in the game play.

If the same nation is claimed by more than one person, dice off on the day of the event.

Nations avaialble: Austria-Hungary, Russian Empire, Germany, France, British Empire, Ottoman Empire, Italy, United States

I am taking exception with a ruling the the FAQ:

Axis & Allies WWI 1914 FAQ, March 31, 2015, page 3:
Q. Is control of Constantinople required for moving sea units through the Turkish Straits?
A. No.
For our game, I will say this should be "Yes".

My reasons for disagreeing:

  • The Suez Canal rule requires control of Egypt to pass through the canal. The Turkish Straits are very similar to the Suez Canal, so they should both be handled the same way.
  • The Allies felt it was necessary to land a major force at Gallipoli to ensure that they could get ships through the Turkish straits.  When that amphibious operation failed, the Allies abandoned their efforts to force Allied ships through the straits.
  • Constantinople is on both sides of the Bosporus (the northern end of the straits) and at its narrowest point, the Bosporus is only 700 meters wide. That is close enough for any Ottoman artillery piece to target an Allied ship in the Bosporus.

I am tempted to go even further and split Sea Zone 20 into two zones (20North and 20 South), each on either side of the Turkish Straits and also to state that both sea zones are mined, but that would be too many changes to achieve the same effect. So I am not making this propposal. Just change the above "No" to a "Yes"

Did not end on a clear conclusion at the end of 1917 and 7.5 hours.
However, Paris was about to be hit hard by a combined AH and German force, and Russia held only Moscow with an island of stacked infantry.

Even without a conclusion, it was fun throughout.
A slower pace than A&A WW2.

Recap:

  • Serbia was knocked out on turn 1.
  • Albania ground away slowly for 3 or 4 turns.
  • Scandanavia was left alone.
  • British North Sea Fleet was knocked out on turn 1, and then was rebuilt around 1916/1917.
  • Most of the British resources went to India, which ground away at the Ottomans.
  • The French played defensively in Europe, but were aggressive in Africa.
  • Germany on the Eastern Front built up a knockout force before marching through Poland, and had a left hook amphibous landing in Finland.
  • Germany on the Western Front built up two battering rams with artillery and air support that pummeled the French, and were on the outskirts of Paris.
  • AH invaded Switzerland and started a right hook into S. France and N. Italy, which then sucked up the Italian reserves.
  • Bulgaria and Romania were both mobilzed early on.
  • The Italian fleet eventually got moving and sunk the tiny AH "navy".
  • Ottoman Turks chewed away at S. Russia and eventually took Sevastapol.
  • Then the Commonwealth Indian and Egyptian forces gnawed away at the Ottoman Empire.

We might have moved the game along quicker if we had 5 or 6 players. With 4 players, doubling up on countries slowed things down.
We did not use the Russian Revolution rules.
Admitedly, we started off slow, since 3 of 4 players had not played the game before. Everyone had read the rules and watched/read material online.
For this type of game and this length, room rental is the way to go. Quieter and few distractions.

We will have another go on Saturday, OCT 13th. For that session, we plan on 10 hours and will try to recruit more players.
