That makes total sense. The bottom line always has to be met. I think a smaller event at a cheaper venue, like a grange or something like that, might be a good way to work up to a full on old school OFCC experience.

Thanks for relating all of those experiences. I am bewildered that people would have negative things to say about OFCC, but I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion. I have played in 5 events, 4 40k and 1 fantasy, and only had 1 bad game the whole time. That game was with a player more concerned about winning than the spirit of the event, imo. I chalked that up to being his problem, not a problem with the event. I am sure he thought it all was "lame" because nobody was being sweaty about things. Anyway... Thanks for giving this so much thought and responding to me. I was reading the rules and set up for the partners event, and I would love to participate in something like that. I don't have the bandwidth to be a HOG, but I would certainly volunteer to help out with a future event. I am glad this club is still around even though I'm a filthy casual. :P

Thanks for letting me know. It's a bummer, but that's how it goes. My .02 is that game nights at the clubhouse are an inherently limited draw because it offers little more than my local game store, but it's a lot longer drive. OFCC has always been different from other tournaments. It offers a totally different play experience than other tournaments, and it's worth traveling for. I know you guys in the Senate are doing your best, but I figured I'd give my feedback. Thanks again.

I enjoyed reading your recap Torg. I haven't played at an ofcc in a hot minute, even given the gap, but I plan to come back next year. I've captained a team before, and been a member of several teams in the past. I'd love to grab some of my buddies from years past and put together a crew. I'm glad the event has returned. I'll be painting to get ready for next summer.

Hello! I've been doing well during the pandemic. I've completed one new 40k army (mostly), and I've almost got a second one fully modeled and converted up. Funny enough, I haven't played a single game. Just hobby time. lol. Thanks for the reply. I hope all is well with you too.

Question is in the subject. My wife pulled out her old crews and we considered getting into 3rd edition but it seems like no shops support it, and even this forum is dead.

It's based on some of the European private gaming club models, or the MWG Bunker, sort of... I have been playing games in this area for decades, and I've found that I really don't enjoy most shops. There is the tacit idea that you should be buying, and they are always geared toward revenue. This idea is that players could support a nice place to game, that isn't focused on selling you things, just the gaming community. My initial research and anecdotal discussions with lots of nerds I know point toward this being a model that would have some popularity, but many people aren't' willing to pay for something they think they can get for free. aka, why go to the nice club house for a monthly subscription when you can go down to the Batcave, or whatever. I'm not trying to cast shade at those shops, or the WOW clubhouse, but the space I have in mind is definitely a more upscale and refined, catering to a much wider audience. Board gamers, CCG gamers, Wargamers, Role players, etc. It may be that this isn't viable, given lease costs, and the need to actually staff the location. Given the need for initial investment, it would need to stay afloat, and pay back the opening costs. It's not a simple endeavor. Other business models are definitely being explored, but my goal is to be the change I wish to see in the world.

I've used them before, but honestly, it was several years ago, and the models weren't my best work. A buddy of mine is really good with them, so I'll probably have him over to give me a bit of a tutorial. General idea is to use it after primer for a base coat, or perhaps as the zenithil highlight. Prime black, base coat with Wall, so it will be a little darker due to the primer. Then zenithil with Marble. I'm not sold on this method, but it's one I will test out, for sure. If I can eliminate doing brush base coating or full model contrast painting, I will be very happy. I'd love to hop in at the more interesting phases of painting.

I am going to do a couple test models, for sure. One of my ideas is a gray base coat, with space wolves grey contrast. It has some blue in it, and might add a tiny hint. I am not against a little blueish gray, but no robin egg blue. I don't want to play the new born baby boy marines. lol

Those look really good. I am hoping for a little lighter tone, but the same take pretty much. It's nice to see that this scheme looks really good in the end. I've decided that I'm going to do some test models with a few methods. I think your layering makes a lot of sense for a non-airbrush technique. I am still on the fence about buying one.

I'll do a little research on air brushes, and then hit you up. Depending on cost, I may take the plunge. The part of me that wants to do it, is the same part that wants to save time. It seems so much faster to get everything done with a brush, then do highlights and accessories. I could, perhaps replicate some of that with rattle cans, since this is not an off the wall scheme. Not sure.

Those models look awesome. Are those yours? I dig the snowy/scrub bases too. I have always been apprehensive about doing an airbrush due to cost, mess, learning curve, etc. Maybe it's time to make the jump, before embarking on this project. Hmmm.... I am sure there are lots of airbrush threads out there. I will research. Question; Why the gloss coat before the panel liner pinwash? Does it make it flow into the creases better, or something like that? Since you later matte coat it, I assume it's not for looks.

Most custom chapters I've seen use a core chapter's rules wholesale. Convert up your own version of the Khan, and just use the rules. Who cares if your scars are a little different. As long as you're armed correctly, all it well. As to the general question, I think you should choose the models you think are coolest. Rules change, toys are forever.

Howdy Ordos, I'm going to be revisiting some power armor in the near future. I'm not done with my Eldar, but it's just down to a couple vehicles and basing. All infantry is painted, so I can start mentally planning the next project. Normally I'd just buy more models, but I am going to wait for a 9th ed codex before I do that. I have a feeling things are going to get a shake up... So, I want to do Space Wolves, but in Gray. I can't stand the baby blue, and I like the heresy style paint a lot better. I'm not sure how to justify it in fluff, but I'll sort it out. I've been assured that gray SW are fairly normal and accepted. It's not like painting orange Ultras or something silly like that. I found some models that I like, and I'll be using them as inspiration. Here they are: (I'm getting limited, so I will add some more in as replies to this post.) I am curious what you guys think would be the best way to get this grey ton armor, while still getting the shadows and highlights. I debated a dark primer with grey zenithil spray. I looked at priming grey seer, then doing the grey contrast paint, and highlighting up. I could just primed a medium grey, wash grey for shadows and highlight up... etc. Lots of options. I don't have an air brush. I assume I'll need to buy some spray paint. (I was looking at Montana Gold artist acrylic spraypaint) I'm not a pro level painter, but I know my way around most standard technique. I am hoping to get a relatively easy spray or wash based base coat, so I can really focus on the details and highlights. Grey has to be highlighted and shaded well, or it looks unpainted. So I plan to be mindful of that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For sure, the boxes need to have different contents, because they can be used with any army. I was watching a youtube video about the value of the contents. Both the SW and DW boxes are 48% off retail. If you ignore the presence of the chapter upgrade sprues, they are 28% off retail. That's pretty strong. I am looking for Dark Angels bits, so I'm hoping to get that sweet 48% value, but I can settle for less if the contents of a box is 100% must-have.

With the new Combat Patrol boxes replacing the Start Collecting, I am wondering if they will be coming out with one for all of the marine supplement dexes. SW and DW got one. Seems logical for DA and BA to get them as well when their books come out. Has anyone heard anything about that?

I think they should make the Doctrines into 1CP strats. You want to be in Assault this turn? Spend a CP and you are. Done deal.

Like many others... I am interested in more marines. Particular Outriders, but I'd buy a whole set if anyone wants to off load it. Have cash, will pay fast. 🙂

I almost spit out my coffee... lol. I love looking at the whacky conversions in Ork armies, but damn... I hate playing against orks. So much RNG, turns take so long because there are a thousand models, and the RNG. Did I mention I hate random stuff? Losing because someone had crazy luck on their "shoots random shots, does random AP, and does random damage" thing feels bad. I like a good tactical game, and those things just kill it for me. I agree with your assessment of sisters though. I love em, and applaud the players. Honestly, any mediocre army that has a lot of love poured into it has my support.
